I just bought a over the counter muledeer tag in south east idaho. Can anybody give me an idea what to expect. I would be happy with a small 4x4. I was thinking of hunting around wyoming idaho border. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

the Idaho F&G website says they're sold out--so you just called them and they said they had some available or did you get a regular tag????...........chris

not a bad place to start, but look for the road restricted areas and hike in, seen 20+ bucks one morning last week, a couple in the 180's

My wife bought the tag for me. Im not sure when she actualy bought it.

Well it sounds like somebody knows where to go. How to i find the areas where road travel isnt allowed. Thanks

I can't help you, but I will BUMP this back up to the top so maybe someone who can help will see it.

Motorized vehicle restrictions are somewhat complicated. The Forest Service, BLM and private land owners all have there own rules and on top of that the F&G has also has some restrictions for hunters. In the SE tag area units 75,77 & 78 have the F&G Motorized Vehicle Restrictions. Check out pages 21 & 28 of the big game regs for details on this rule. Here's a link to the big game regs.

You can get a map from the forest service that shows vehicle restrictions but don't know if you can view those maps online (if someone knows where you can see these forest service maps online post a link for the rest of us). A general rule is to assume that the trail is closed to ATVs unless it is posted as open. You can get a good a good idea of where the roads are from DeLorme?s Idaho Atlas & Gazetteer map or USGS maps but sometimes they don't list all the roads and often show roads that are closed. The best way to figure out where the roads and ATV trails are is to spend some time in the woods.

You will also find out that there aren't many places that you can get much more than a mile from a road in the SE Tag area. Just like everywhere else there are people "hunting" this area from the seat of their ATVs that don't think the rules apply to them.

I found they had 36 tags left a couple of months ago so I called and got one a week later.

Thanks Brian this is some good info. Thanks everyone for the replies. Not really looking for a trophy, just the hunt, so a nice small 4X4 would taste good this winter. Don't think that being a non-res is impossible to draw for NV, its just about as hard for a res the past 10 years or so. I like to hike and still hunt so some of these areas sound awsome.
2 years ago my youngest son and I spent about 2 hours hiking to the top of some mountains here in NV,, only to see 2 atv's go by right above us on the ridge. My son was so upset he was ready to go home but I pushed him on up and over and we hung out till they had glassed and left. About 30 minutes later we walked to where they had been and hunted another 100 yards to a rock pile and jumped a 28" 4X4 that he dropped in one shot at about 50 yards. It made a believer out of him. Anyway, thanks again and I hope everyone gets some huntin therapy this year. Have fun,
Chuck

I have hunted this area a lot. In fact I had a ranch there, on Preuss creek. There are tons of people in 76. The bucks have reacted by holding very tight. I mean Tight! Look for small pockets out in the sage, because the big bucks will be out there. Keep poking around and you will do alright. Good luck!

Thanks guys for all your help, im going to head up there in the next week or so and do some scouting.
