So who do YOU think shot the buck?

Bottom line question is; who do you think shot the buck? Here's what happened;

After hunting apart all morning last Monday, my hunting partner and I met up about noon to return to the truck. After seeing a fair number of 4 x 4s (and one GREAT, but very elusive buck that was likely 185 or better) we decided that we should at least take a small guy if one presented itself within 1/2 mile of the truck so we would at least go home with something. About 15 minutes after we made that decision, sure enough, we jumped up a medium sized 2 x 3 about 25 yards from us. I whistle and he stops dead cold at 45 yards, totally broadside. I look at my partner and he looked at me, we said nothing (like "go ahead, you shoot it"), looked back at the buck. Then we both shouldered our smokepoles (thinking the other guy wasn't going to shoot, I guess), squeezed off a round SIMULTANEOUSLY (one big "boom"), and the velvet 2 x 3 dropped like a rock.

So here's the details and dillemma; even as of today, we really have NO true idea of who REALLY shot the buck, and here's why; both shots went off simultaneously not even 1/2 a second between shots. We both aimed at the shoulder, but the buck was shot thru the neck. We both used 50 cal. Powerbelt bullets (and the bullet broke the neck and went thru, no bullet recovery). We both were standing within 5 feet of each other, the buck was above us, a little to our right at about 15 feet elevation at 45 yards out. When we returned to camp, we fired rounds at the exact same distance and elevation and we both hit within 2" of the same spot (in other words, neither smokepole was out of whack). My partner thinks he jerked his shot high, and I kinda thought that I was steady on him, so we agreed that due to this goofy situation, I should tag him (since I still had a cow tag to fill and he could pursue that big B & C buck that he saw on opening morning in the deep timber), and the other reason was my partner was purty sure he jerked the shot. Problem is, I thought I was on target and if I hit it, I also must've jerked my shot.

So who shot that buck?

P.S. For you guys in Utard, "simultaneous" means "at the same time" :)

(I'm probably gunna pay dearly for that one.......)

At only 45 yards I believe if your buddy jerked his shot he would've hit the neck. I think your buddy shot the deer.

EVEN AS DUMB AS YOU THINK WE ARE,I WOULD OF NEVER ADMITTED TO HITTING THAT BUCK!!!

RULE # 1 NEVER SHOOT AT A FAWN!!!

RULE # 2 IF YOU WERE SHOOTING AT IT,YOU MUST CLAIM IT!!!

RULE # 3 WHEN MY 600 GRAIN SLUG HAS ENTERED & EXITED THERE IS NO NEED FOR DECIPHERING WHO HIT WHERE!!!

THE ONLY bobcat NOT FLOCK SHOOTING THE LAST FEW 2 POINTS WE HAVE LEFT!!!

P.S. USING YOUR HEAD MEANS USING THAT ROUND THING MOUNTED UPON YOUR SHOULDERS,OH,I FORGOT,SOME OF YOU HAVE THAT ROUND THING ELSEWHERE!!!

I think Geraldo did it.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-04 AT 03:34PM (MST)[p]Bobcat, you're funny..... see..........that's why I tried to explain "simultaneous" to you (we BOTH shot at it, but only one person could tag it)!

I had plenty of chances to shoot LOTS smaller deer than this one, but passed em up the first couple days looking for a nice 4 x 4; only problem this hunting trip was that my knee was just about shot for the trip already on Monday (had knee surgery 5 weeks ago), so I decided on taking one of "the last of the dinks" before I couldn't do another hike.....nuff said.

600 grain bullets? Only in Utah...........:)

i think there was s third shooter on the grassy knoll, and you guys stole his deer.

I doubt theres any way to tell ever. If you've already tagged it as you should have then don't sweat it. Its not like you are arguing over a shoulder mount. Then if he doesn't get his deer split the meat with him. Seems simple enough. Plus it was a meat deer anyway so whats the big deal?

Had about the same thing happen years ago on a bowhunt in CO. We were happy that we got a deer but the only way we knew who killed it was that we were lucky enough to find my buddies arrow covered with blood and there was only one hit. He and I both thought we saw my arrow hit and his miss. You never know.

Good luck on the cow.

ARE YOU DOUBTING MY 600 GRAIN SLUGS???

YOUR SHOULDER WILL BE ACHING AS WELL AS YOU'RE KNEE,AND I'M NOT BEING SMART,JUST TRUTHFUL!!!

YA SEE,I HAD A SIMILAR SITUATION HAPPEN,ONLY THE OTHER SHOOTER WAS ON ANOTHER RIDGE,I NEVER HEARD HIS SHOT,I SEEN HIM HEADED UP TOWARDS MY BUCK,HE CLAIMED HE HAD HIT IT,THERE WAS SNOW ON THE GROUND,THE 600 GRAIN SLUG PICKED HIM UP AND MOVED HIM BACK 11 FEET,WHEN I SHOWED THE GUY THE LAST TRACKS THE BUCK HAD MADE AND THE HOLE THROUGH THE BROADSIDE HE SAID HE'D NEVER SEEN A UTARD PACKING THAT MUCH FIRE POWER AND ADMITED THERE WAS NO DOUBT I TOOK THE BUCK DOWN WITH THE HELP OF A 600 GRAIN SLUG.

NOBODY OFFERED TO TURN THEIR LE ELK TAG BACK IN,SO I WILL WAIT AGAIN AND SOMEDAY HOPE I CAN SEE IF MR ELK CAN TAKE THE HIT,WHAT A SHAME,I'VE SPOTTED THE BIGGEST BULL I'VE EVER CALLED IN AND NO TAG,I FIGURED SOMEBODY OUT THERE WOULD BE NICE AND TURN THEIR TAG BACK IN,I GUESS PEOPLE AIN'T AS NICE AS I THOUGHT THEY WERE???

THE ONLY bobcat WITH A BLACK & BLUE SHOULDER!!!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-18-04 AT 10:31PM (MST)[p]Sam....I think you're onto something there......if the third shot was also simultaneous, then you could be right. Only thing is, we didn't see any smoke cloud from that knoll. Maybe the guy over there had the wind blowing down on him or somethin :)

Bobcatbess......Heck, I didn't even know anyone even MADE 600 grain critterplugs. Your buck only got shoved back 11 feet when it hit him? I would've guessed it'd drive him into the next county (lol)! That's a heck of a slug to even throw at an elephant I'd say. As for me, I've had enough joint problems this year, so I think I'll save my shoulder and stick with stuff under 400 grains, plus they don't shoot like a rainbow. Man, I can't imagine the recoil from them things, that's gotta be murder on ya....

And to Jeff..... you're absolutely right, no big deal and of course we split the meat, it's the right thing to do when one guy gets a critter and the other doesn't. No luck on the cow tag, though, my first year honestly pursuing any elk, mostly a learning experience. I almost had a chance at a cow, but they somehow disappeared on me in the timber. Still learning........

I just thought that this was a kinda strange situation, one I've never been in before with both of us shooting at the exact same time and there was no way we could determine who missed completely and who missed high and right. I've dropped two wild boar with one bullet before (also with this same hunting partner) and he and I have also shot two different hogs next to each other about 1/2 second apart. No question on those rascals, and we usually use different calibers taboot. But this was a definitely a new one for us.......guess you could say my hunting buddy and I kinda have the same timing on the triggers......

I saw the pics of the paper you killed at the range, Myke, You shoot an Omega, right? No doubt, you killed the deer.

Coot

Lets see?? Hmmmm, Well?, Free, I think you have been had!!!. Your buddy still has a tag and there is a b&c buck still running around??. I think I would have missed to...(wink) LOL!. By the way, How did your knee hold out?

This is a funny post, the 3rd guy on the hill, plus I like Kingfish's response, at least you have some meat going into the winter.

Nice shooting Calboys, sounds like you both jerked off a couple rounds, I know buck fever can get pretty intense stairing down the sights at a 2x3, and you call us Utards.

Cooter.......you're too kind. Those Omega holes were in paper off a bench, this was snapshooting offhand.....whole different deal.

Shotgunjim.....Now why didn't I think of that? Yep, that must've been it, us Cali boys seeing one of those big monster 2 x 3 Colorado monsters :) ..... Must've both had buck fever and missed clean, then the guy on the knoll took care of business for us and was probably laughing his arse off when we got up to the buck to check on where the hole was! P.S. My in-laws are Utards (Escalante-ards) so maybe some of that stuff rubbed off, eh?

KF....The knee held up OK, used a walking stick the whole time (downhills are torture on freshly cut meniscuses so they said). Only goofup was when I crossed a barb wire fence with 1/2 that critter on the packframe....it shifted a little and down I went, all the weight right on that knee. Kinda smarted after that, but it'll be OK. I was lucky to be able to hike as much as I did and climb up/down a 1,500 foot mountain two times. All in all, I'm glad I didn't cop out and stay home, that's for sure. Fun hunt, saw lots of cool stuff (Sandhills, elk, deer, coyotes, pintails, grouse) up there and flattened the muley learning curve some more. And you're right, part of the reason we decided to put my tag on it was that this was my partners first deer hunt and he wanted that big un purty bad after he missed his first chance at it. It's still safe and sound up there, maybe a lucky hunter in the rifle season will nab him, sure sounded like a beauty....

Myke,
Congratulations!
Glad to hear you took some venison home with you.
As long as you had a good time I would not worry about it too much or the ribbing others are giving you.
Hope your knee heals up well for next years hunt.
Best,
Jerry

Jerry, you're always one for some good words, thanks for em. And not to worry, I'm pretty self-deprecating many times (for you guys in Utah, that means..........nah, never mind, go look it up), so a jab here and there makes me grin too :)

Why oh why would I post something up about a dink on a forum called Monster Muleys if I couldn't take a slam here and there, eh? It's cool.......but next year my knee and the rest of me should be in good shape, God willing, and I'm gunna have to produce something with some horns bigger than toothpicks.....

P.S. If I didn't thank you for your offer a couple weeks ago, then thanks, that was kind of ya. Now it's your turn, go whack a big one, Mr. Knack.....
