LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-04 AT 07:33PM (MST)[p]Scariest hunt of my life. My wife got early stages of hypothermia the first night. It was my fault for pushing too hard on the muddy trail and not having her in the correct clothing. I could not believe how quickly it hits. A couple scary hours in two sleeping bags(rescent 0 degree bag by North Face was the best purchase of my life) and hot meals reversed a very scary and dangerous situation. She wore my wool the rest of the hunt. Of course I did not hunt the opening morning, we dried out and ate well.
The next morning we found a great campsite 2 miles up the trail and hunted hard that evening. He was with 2 smaller bucks. I easily closed top 300 yrds. and then debated for 15 min. to pull the trigger. I'm in the middle of a job transfer/move and that was the deciding factor in the end. At first I was a little dissapointed with his size(26" 150 gross). But I think he wears it well. I think he was only 3 1/2 years old, the tripod on his left rear probabbly would have been awesome in a couple of years. On the way out, almost at dark, I jumped one of those monsters in the timber. I only had a split second look at him, but he was heavy, heavy, and tall. His body size was unbelievable.
I really found out what the most important things in life are last week. Hunting is not one of them.
