Has anyone had any success elk hunting Unit 21 around Shoup? Was there last week and things were a bit slow. If things pick up I thought I might try again the last week of the season.

Got an e-mail from a wolf pack. They say they have the same plans to hunt 21 this weekend. Good luck Horsepacker, but I have heard 3 stories about 21 wolves lately. Let us know how you did, oh yeah, can you get a real wolf count, I believe the game department ran out of fingers and toes to count with!

I used to guide in that country in 92 and 93. It was awesome, we killed some nice elk and deer up Kamas Creek and Flume Creek. We saw the first wolf there in 93, from what I understand its just gone downhill from there

We hunted hard for 5 days and found 3 small groups of elk and two singles. No deer. Each group had wolves harassing them. Saw one decent bull breifly, not long enoung to get a shot. All of the elk were extremely sensitive to any additional pressure and once spooked left the country. Good looking country but there were as many wolf tracks as elk. Saw two wolves and two moose.

I have hunted that area for 15 years now and have seen what the area has turned into since the introduction of the wolves. Wolves or not the deer and elk are still there. I killed a big 4 point buck in the area on the 17th of Oct. (I will post a pic soon) I killed a 4 pt bull a couple days later in my honey hole. I only hunted elk for 3 days and saw 8-10 bulls. I missed the bigger bull before shooting the 4pt but they are there. The elk and deer are acting differently each year. They are not where they used to be and hard to find. I have been finding them in places that I would have never thought about going to before. I was up there hunting during the time you were there. Just have to keep at it and do lots of glassing. The last week up there can be excellent. I have hunted that a few times during that period. Bring your chains for your truck and be careful. You will need them.
If you want to send me a message and I might be able to assist you in where I would start my search. When I left there on Friday there was virtually no one on the mountain.

Id sure like to know how the elk are acting different. I dont hunt idaho but i am from hamilton, mt so just north of where you guys are talking about.

I used to do pretty well but i simply cant find many elk back in my old honeyholes that are usually a little farther walk than most people will do. With wolves everything is changed.

in 04 i seen more elk then deer, this year i seen more deer then elk, and the ones i have seen have been really low, where i hunt i hear the wolves have pushed em down low....if i seen a wolf it would be attacking me even if i had to make bite marks after it was dead.....pack em up send em to cali, along the border 2 birdies 1 stone
