Well, Nov 04 marks the beginning of a 15 day elk hunt for me. I finally drew a bull tag after 25 years. I leave Friday morning for eastern Nevada and can't wait. Tell me, is it normal to get the "bubble guts" when waiting with anticipation? lol! I'll be posting pics when I return, hopefully of elk. We'll see.

What area you headed to? I will be making the same trip, though I am taking off Wednesday to get a few extra days of scouting in before opener. Been counting down the days since July! Good luck to you.

Bigfly and Falloutwest, PM me if you'd like with the unit number you're hunting. I just returned yesterday from helping a buddy on his muzzleloader hunt in one of the Nevada units. If it's the same unit, I'll be glad to pass along what we learned on where to hunt. It was an outstanding hunt, but definitely different than we expected. Lots and lots of elk, but many in different habitat than you'd expect.

BigFly-It is very normal to have the "bubble guts" as you call them.I also just got back from my muzzy hunt in one of the eastern units also.I had the big time jitters about a week before my hunt, but I calmed down when I got there. If you are hunting around the same unit as me,you are in for a trophy hunt.I shot my bull last Sunday and we seen probably 40 bulls in 3 days and they were screaming their heads off.My pics and story are on the elk forum. Thanks by the way for giving me the site to downsize them.It worked out great.I am glad to hear your taking the entire hunt off.I did as well, but shot my bull on the second day and don't have to be back to work until Nov.6.Lot's of time for monster muleys.Good luck on your hunt.I know you will have a blast.Post some pics when you get back-of elk.

CAelknuts,How did your buddy do.I also had a muzzy tag and shot my bull on the 2nd day.We seen lots of bulls. My brother got film of a lot of them.It was a great hunt. All I expected and then some. Now the 30 year wait to do it again.

nvguy2, I saw the pictures of your bull in the other post. Congratulations on a beutiful bull! What unit were you hunting in if you don't mind me asking?

My buddy has a tag for some of the eastern units as well, he is heading out on thursday and i will follow on friday hopefully we can get on a nice bull, good luck here is hoping mm will have some big ole nevada bulls posted up in the coming weeks

nvguy2, we had a blast! He killed a nice 6 pt. bull on the 7th day, but he was somewhat smaller than we thought he'd be. There were no other bulls to judge him against, and his body was smaller than we expected, and antlers to match. He missed the biggest bull we saw erarlier in the hunt. That said, we had one of the best and most enjoyable elk hunts I can imagine. There were three of us working for his bull, and the extra eyes and ability to look in multiple places at once helped a lot. We saw a ton of elk and most of them were not in country that you'd expect to see so many elk in.

Let's just say I found some nice pronghorn bucks while elk hunting.....

Thanks all....another day off the calendar. Justin, i took my boy to Elko and he got 2 shots at a deer that could have been your buck's twin brother. I misjudged him and the shots were hurried due to the buck feeding into some thick sh!t. 459 yards and I eyeballed the distance at 350. usually I'm pretty good at that. must have been too much snow on the ground...ha! He took a small fork but was just as happy as if it was a stud.

Hey elknuts, I too have seen lots of elk in and around the speed goats. Were you north or south of Ely?

Anyway, Fallout, if you pass by a blue Dakota, stop in and say hi.
Good luck to all who is heading out this week.

I know this is the elk forum but I wanted to show my boy's deer.

fallout-we were just north of ely in the schell creek range down by kalamazoo . pm if you have the same unit.

We were hunting about an hour or so northeast of Wells. About 10 miles or so west of Montello.

No, we didn't meet, though I'd have enjoyed that. We spent most of our time out in a tent camp, only coming in to Wells for gas and an occasional meal.

it looks like it will be unseasonably warm, i wonder what it will do to the elk movement?

It got up into the mid-60s while we were hunting, and we had the full moon. We noticed that most elk didn't begin moving much until about 15-30 minutes after daylight. We also saw a lot of elk out and about during late morning through mid-day.

Thats a great buck , I love seeing pics of youngsters with big game.Congrats to your boy and as well to you , you guys did just right....Thanks for sharing it...

Bubble guts are OK.
It's when you puke your guts out after the shot, that you know you have problems!!!
LOL.

Well folks, I'm back. I'm pretty disappointed about the hunt. The very first morning I was able to hike over three miles to the top of this huge bowl and get within 800 yards of a 380 class giant. I watched him and a smaller bull (350 class) fight like you wouldn't believe. They acted like they were still rutting. The 380 won the fight after breaking the smaller bull?s left main beam in half. The 380 came out of it with a broken 3rd on his right side. I frantically hurried down the side of a hidden face and tried to get into shooting range. When I arrived at my vantage point, the elk were all gone. He had bugled his harem into the heavy stand of pines below me. It was very cool to see he had an albino cow with him. She wasn?t just spotted with white, but full on head-to-toe white. We then had 2 guys on horses begin following the elk around in the trees and pretty much chasing them out of the area completely. It was disgusting.

After this mess, I began glassing around and found a large herd working their way down a drainage into the sage flat. I spotted a good 350 class 5x5 in with the herd. Everything about this bull was awesome except for the lack of the royals. We went back to camp and headed back out later that afternoon in pursuit of the 5x5. we got set up on the top of the sage flat the elk entered in to. As the sun began to drop, we spotted my bull grazing up a drainage about ? mile away. There wasn?t enough time to get on him so we planned to set up in the am in the same place. We glassed up the draw from us and spotted the 380 with his harem pop out of a small aspen patch and out of nowhere; three guys on horses rode like hell and got up on the bull and his cows. The elk took off back into the trees and disappeared into the timbers forever.

The next morning found us set up where we were the night before and there was a herd feeding out of the aspens above us. They appeared to be working their way right toward us. Suddenly, they stopped working down and headed up and over the knob. We glassed a good bull across from us moving into a stand of mahogany trees. We ended up moving the extra ? mile over there and sat for the rest of the day in wait. We found a spring that the elk were using frequently. Most of the bulls we saw were muddy. It was strange to see them rutty still.

As the sun began to set, we spotted the big 5x5 coming out of the trees about 1000 yards below. I hauled a$$ down a drainage and found myself within 300 yards of bugling elk. It was awesome. I saw a body flash as I was sneaking up, so I dropped down and waited. This elk was screaming his head off and I thought for sure he was the 5x5. When he stepped out from behind the juniper and screamed once again in my face, all I saw was crosshairs on his body. I squeezed and drilled him at 278 yards. He hunched up and walked about 10 yards and stopped to give me the final blow. After the second shot, he went maybe 5 yards and dropped. When I got to him and saw that I had shot the wrong bull, I was very disappointed and angry with myself for not taking my time. I wished I could start over and try it again.

Anyway, it was a fun hunt and we saw tons of bulls. We saw a huge 6x5 buck that reminded me of my little honey hole in Elko. All-in-all, it was a great time. Here are a few shot of my bull.

Take care, Corey

Here is a little guy that I bugled down the ridge to me.

What a beautiful area. Grafton Peak

Looks like you were hunting Grafton. I saw your bulls as well as your albino cow when I was down there scouting a couple weeks before season opened. We ended up hunting the Schell Creeks but had that not worked out we were going to head down to Grafton. Sounds like it was a zoo so I am glad we didn't have to. Bummer that you shot the wrong bull, still at least you got one. I know a few people with the same tag that are still trying to get an elk.

we were in that exact area on the day before the opener and saw those bulls and those yaa-hoo's on the horses when we were trying to find an campsite closer to the bulls for the morning hike, we bugged out and went to an area that was a lot less crowded (also a lot less elk) unfortunately my buddy with the tag has not been able to close the deal yet and is still out there trying to get his elk. despite the mishap it is always awesome to be out in the wilds hunting, congrats on the bull, any bull is a trophy especially a hard fought one.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-07 AT 01:46PM (MST)[p]Guys, I gotta tell ya...if there is any way to get ahold of your buddies while they are still on their hunt, try to do so and tell them to hike over to SHEEP SPRING before 1st light and hide in the junipers 200yards across the draw from the spring and wait. No walkin around, just sit and hide. If it doesnt pan out in the morning, hike over to it by 230 pm and wait. start glassing the mahogonies above and the sage flat mixed with junipers below. I've never seen so many elk down low this late. I'm sure they will connect. The pressure has probably let up in that area as well. Get in touch with them if you can and wish them luck.

Godsten,
You should know which yaa-hoos you are speaking of first. The Horses Fly referred to were not ridden out of a camp, they were ridden from the horse trailer parked on Cave Valley Road.

right, we saw them when we were heading over to cave valley, that is where we hunted after giving up on grafton, we also saw two groups on the road near the herd and the another group on the road just down from there. like i said unreal pressure, we saw 5 camps in that immediate area so we bugged out. 3 of the groups had horses so i figured one of them musta been the guys fly saw chasing the elk. thought it was the ones of the patterson pass road but wasn't sure, thanks for the info.

FLY thank you for the info, tried to let my buddy know hopefully he gets it he will be pumped to start seeing elk in numbers let alone take one. again FLY thanks

I did see the guys from Cave Valley Ranch up in there on 1 day but the horses Im speaking of was the camp above mine. one of the guys I spoke to was from Hawthorne and I believe he had a pal outta Ely bring the horses. It was stupid how they continued to ride ALL DAY after the elk went to bed. Anyway, hope you friend gets your message.
