O.K.....since the seasons are alomost over, I would like to hear about how well you think your bullet performed or failed on elk. Give us the info and your thoughts:

Gun Caliber
Yardage
Bullet used ( type and grain )
Entrance and/or exit location
Entrance and/or exit hole and size
How many shots?
How far the animial traveled?
Were you satisfied?

My elk in 2006:
7mm Rem Ultra Mag
450 yds
160 gr. Nosler Accubond 3150 fps
High shoulder Entrace hole
Low Shoulder Exit 1/2" hole
One shot
Elk Stagered approx. 50 yds. down hill and went down
I was very satisfied.

My hunting buddys elk 2007:
338 Rem Ultra Mag
320 yds
225 gr. Nosler Accubond 3050 fps
High and behind the shoulder entrance hole
Low and behind the shoulder exit 5/8" hole
One shot
Elk stood after shot, the staggered down hill 30 yds into a tree and went down
He was very satisfied also.

My son's cow elk this year.
30.06
250-275 yards
Federal Premium Nosler Partition, 165 gr.
Low chest shot behind the right front leg
No exit
One shot
Animal went about 10 feet and dropped
Extremely satisfied

Its fair chase, or its foul!

7mm magnum
160 grain accubond
through left shoulder quartering to me passed through both lungs bull rolled ten yards

My favorite bullet would have to be a 383gr. ACC tipped with a
100gr. Interloc Stainless Extreme at about 290fps out of my PSE
X-force.
Seriously though I've shot 3 elk with 150gr. Combined Technology
Bullets out of my 7mm. They work great. But lately I've been using a 160gr. Accubond with 70gr. of IMR 7828 at 3150fps. They work a little better for bustin shoulders.

Shoot'em till their dead

I took a 5 point bull a few weeks ago with a 180 TSX in a 300 win mag at 320 yards. first shot was a little far back through the rib cage, no reaction so I shot again, again through the rib cage but missed the lungs. he stagered, turned back into the thicket and was dead by the time I got there. either shot would have killed him from the amount of blood on the ground. this is the 6th animal I've taken with the TSX but the first one with just hits in the rib cage at a longer distance. now I feel confident they're the perfect all around bullet, I had reservations about just such a shot before.

My son's '07 bull.

30:06
118 yds.
Remington Core-lokt
Entry: high, right behind shoulder
Exit: higher, in front of opposite shoulder
One shot, complete pass through
Dropped at the shot due to broken spine
Very satisfied

Gun Caliber: Win 338
Yardage: <500 yards :)
Bullet used: ( Barnes X, 225 grain)
Entrance: Front neck
How many shots? 2 shots. First one in the left front leg and then the fatal one.
How far the animial traveled? 10 yards after the first shot, then he dropped like a ton of bricks.
Were you satisfied? Absolutley, my 12 year old son was with me, what more can you ask?

I shot my 2007 Nevada bull with my 50. caliber Knight in-line muzzleloader shooting 150 grains(pellets)and a 300 grain hornady sst bullet.I missed the first shot and reloaded in time to get a second shot that was true at 200 yards. The bullet went right through the lower front shoulder and into his vitals.Ther was no exit wound.I wish I would have examined it a little closer to find the bullet as I had quite a few people on the muzzleloader forum tell me that my setup was basically rediculous for elk hunting.I did not have time to look for the bullet as dark was setting on us.This bull stood for about 10 seconds after I shot him, then tried to follow the cows, side stepping about 3 times and going right down into the trees. He expired very quick.so,I would have to say I am very satisfied with my set-up after many questions in my mind of which set-up to use for my elk hunt.I actually need to post this on the muzzleloder forum as well, but wanted to share it on this post also.Sorry so long.

250 yd. Broadside shot with 140 x bullet. Broke both shoulder down for the count. Rifle Ruger m77 in 6.5x.284. 3rd or 4th elk for this rifle and load with no problems at all.

30/06 my 5x5 colorado bull
120 yards
180 grain Hornady interlock spire point
56 grains of IMR 4350 about 2700fps ?
high shoulder shot
went about 20 yards.

My buddy's 5x6
300 mag
135 yards
200 grain Nolser partition
2900 fps
shoulder shot
went about 10 yards.
bullet recovered-----just like all the other partitions I've seen front 1/2 gone just copper shreds left, back half 100% intack.
10 yards

My son's cow last weekend.

1-Gun, Pre 64 winchester 270 winchester Leupold 3x9 vxII
2-Yardage, 345 yards slightly down hill
3-Bullet, 140 gr Hornady BTSP interlock
4-Entrance, the shot went down through the spine, took out the lungs and lodged in the liver. (down hill shot into top of back)
5-entrance hole was not that big concedering it hit the spine.
6- 1 shot was all that was needed to yank the rug
7- distance traveled? dead on impact never moved a inch.
I was very satisfied. but I knew that this bullet has taken over 15 head of elk. it has a proven track record on elk. The bullet weighed 61.3 gr after it smashed through the spine. Ron

My dad shot a small 6X6 on the any bull muzzleloader. Used a T/C Pro Hunter 50 cal., 300 grain Powerbelt, 100 gr of Tripple 7. Hit the bull at 251 yards. It went through the left front shoulder, went through the heart about 4 inches up, broke a rib on the right side and ended up next to the hide. The bull stood there for about ten seconds, took 5 steps and fell over.
I am sure he was satisfied.

2007 NV 7x7 bull elk with 7mm mag 160gr winchester accubonds. First shot at 240yds went through left shoulder and into lungs. Bull tried to run uphill 30 yards stumbling. Second shot through right front leg. Bull falls again but gets up turns and third shot goes through left front shoulder and again through lungs bull drops. First shot would have done it but exitement and stories of big bulls getting away decided to put the other shots into him. Very satisfied with outcome.

2007 Elk
300 Rem Ultra mag
480 yds
Barnes TSX 180 grain
Entrance just behind rib cage
Not a full exit, lodged just under the hide at the off-side shoulder
One shot fired, animal traveled 50 feet and went down
Bullet performance was just as billed by Barnes. The bullet leafed perfectly, had about 20-24 inches of penetration, and retained nearly all it's weight.

2007 Red Stag
300 Rem Ultra Mag
287 yards
Nosler custom loads, Accubond 150gr
Entrance just behing shoulder
No exit and animal traveled 150 yards
Second shot at 430 yards, neck shot
Lousy bullet performance, the bullet lacked penetration and disengrated. The fragmentation of the bullet create significant internal damage, but not deep enough in the animal's cavity. The neck shot did not even exit. I believe the load was too fast (3450 fps) and too light to allow the bulllet to stay together. It makes a heckuva bullet wack sound!

2007 6x5
Diamond Liberty set at 68#
23.516 yards lol
Carbon express maxima hunter 350 grains
G5 100gr montec broadhead
285fps
slightly quartering away entered right behing the 3rd rib hit the oppisite shoulder went about 125-150 yards

1996 LE Spirit Lake area
300 Win Mag Model 70
180 gn Winchester Fail Safe
Entrance left shoulder center mass 1/2" hole
Exit right side directly behind shoulder 1/2" hole
150 yards
Left shoulder bone shattered meat detroyed
Bull made 4 wobbly steps stood momentarily fell completely over and over
Bullet passed through both lungs no lung tissue just clotted blood
Satisfied but question the bullet's expansion - exit wound and entry wound exact same size

1959 30-30 12x14 Bull However not my best shot or bull. Cross Winds were gusting 40-80 mph. We didn't have range finders back then. But I could still see the bull. I figure about 1800 yards. The bull was on a dead run through the timber he was in the middle of a heard of cows. I spied a small opening in the trees about 3 yards across but the angle of decent was not appropriate. Bullet round steely hand loaded with black powder. I couldn't afford lead bullets. Well it was something like off the rock on the ridge to the rock on the far side of the canyon down the valley and Kentucky windage compensated for the grove of trees into the eye. Dead on impact. I will try and find a couple of pics. Oh yeah I was 2 my first bull. Exit hole the other eye. Rutnbuck
