Idaho opening day

Just got back from opening day here in Idaho. Going back this weekend. Anyways, we were hunting a draw unit, my cousin kill a decent buck 4x4 24 inch wide 22 tall. Anyways, I guess unit 56 was a joke. Just people everywhere. I wanna hear some stories from there.

I stayed out of 56, but it sure took some pressure off of some other units. That was nice. I took one of the bucks I was watching all summer, a 27" 4x4. First opening day deer for me in 13 years. Maybe just a little bit of an ichy trigger finger. But I got one more tag for November in Unit 27, that is when the big one will die.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-04 AT 04:10PM (MST)[p]My friends went down for the day, and killed 2 nice bucks. A 28" and a 25", and saw some more good ones. I guess the crowds were terrible, but most were road hunting or sitting around in their camps complaining by 11:00AM. My son went the other way up on the Idaho/Montana Divide towards Salmon and saw deer and few people.

Hunted the first two days in unit 73 around Malad. The deer numbers are way down from what we saw a few years ago. Saw three 24" type 4x4's taken out of about 25 hunters. Did not see many does or small bucks. The horse guys really hit the area we were at hard. May try a different unit in a few days.

just got back from 56, was a learning experience. seen probably 25 4x4 and bigger bucks taken seen 3 bucks that are still alive over 30 inch, seen a double drop buck couldnt find him again, and seen the biggest forked horn ever, over 33 inches, i missed him another guy took him, saw lots of little bucks and thousands of people............... see what f@g does for the unit next year..........

Did 56 turn into a general area?

Yes, they made 56 a general area this year with the first few days of the hunt being any buck and the last few weeks being 2 point only.

I obviosly wasn't in the same area as 300stw.

There were hunters on every finger ridge I could see. Literally I could count more than 15 hunters from my opening day location. I only saw two bucks, neither worth shooting. I was hunting over near North Heglar and then spent Wednesday around Meadow Creek.

What general area were you in 300stw if you don't mind me asking?

It has been so successful removing pressure from other areas, we will probably open up Unit 45 to general hunting next year. That way there wouldn't be any crowds in the rest of the state!!!!
