Landowner tag suggestions for senior hunter?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to research an elk hunt for 2008. I want to get my 81 yr old grandpa a chance at a bull elk. For 81 he's in real good shape, and hunts with us quite often. He can go for hours on flat ground, but not too far on steep terrain.

So.. with that said. I'm looking for suggestions on landowner bull elk tags. They can be rifle or muzzleloader, but really want to hunt the rut and hear those bugles. Thats a must have for me on this hunt, I really want to experience that with him.
Not really looking for a monster but would like an area where something over 300 would be possible. As far as price, from what I've read I think I should be able to find this type of tag from 2000-3500. Maybe New Mexico, Wyoming, or Montana?

I've heard good things about landowner tags in New Mexico unit 36. But from what I read about the draw hunts, its pretty rugged. Any idea on the terrain in the private areas?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm even open to a semi-guided type hunt. We will have a couple non-hunters, so that makes me shy away from a guided type hunt.

thanks!

You wont be able to buy landowner permits in Montana or Wyoming.

Landowner tags in Utah are really pricey. But there are some CWMU's that have great access for your grandfather. There are exspensive too though.

Try Colorado Land Owner Permits. There is some good elk country in NW Colorado that is semi rolling land at least in compared to most elk areas. Worth a look.

thanks for all the info so far.
i know utah would be great but I don't think I can afford those prices. I will look into colorado. There are just so many units its a little intimidating on where to even start.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-07 AT 05:34AM (MST)[p]I'd like to talk to you about GMU 52 in NM. Beautiful country, lots of elk. Terrain can be tough but there are some areas that are not to bad. e mail me at [email protected].

Have you considered taking him on an elk hunt on the Jicarilla Reservation? I haven't checked their prices in awhile, but there weren't all that much over the top end of the prices you mention, and they have quality, easy elk hunting and he will almost certainly have an opportunity to shoot an elk on that hunt. It's an easy hunt, plenty of elk and pretty good quality too.

Buy an over the counter tag in colorado and let him shoot one from the truck.. Oh wait.. Maybe you wanted something better than 280".. Well count colorado out then.. Id say a CWMU in utah will get you what you want for the Gramps..

You might want to check out Colorado Private ranches, a sponser on this site. I have never personally used them, but hear good things. They have private ranches in OTC areas of Colorado. Pretty reasonable rates for hunting private ground. Won't be for really trophy animals, but a pretty decent chance at seeing some game in some easier to navigate country. Worth a look.
