Hey, I am a resident in Gillete Wy and need a place to hunt. I have hunted the public lands here for the last 6 years and have only gotten one deer and I hunt hard. I dont have money for taking a deer on private land because I am in college but I still want to be able to get one every year or so. I have tried talking to landowners with no success...Any Suggestions? I'll continue to hunt the public lands but there is not alot of deer around. I would take a forkhorn but I have not even seen that this year. Thanks

Boy that doesn't sound good. Good thing I didn't drawn there as I did list it as my second choice. I don't have any advice but wanted to know what most people want for tresspass fees? I assume you hunt Thunder Basin grasslands? There is some "walk in" private land listed on the WY website that you would not need to pay. Hang near the property lines of the private land. Sorry I can't help. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-04 AT 10:09PM (MST)[p]If I were you I would talk more to landowners. If you keep on working on them one will probably give in. Try bargaining like give them 20lbs of meat from your animal or stuff like that. A friend of mine told me that every year one hunter brings them a bunch of sweet corn and they allow him to hunt their land every year. Also if they say that they don't allow hunting on their land just ask if they know someone that does. Don't forget to mail them thank you cards as well. Good luck!

Thanks guys...As far as the walk in areas go, I think I have covered every square inch of those twice. The first year they opened I saw a couple of really nice bucks 30+ wide come out of there but they have been hunted very hard and you would be lucky to find anything. I think I'll try what you guys said and if that does not work I will just keep hunting...Its fun even if you dont get a deer right away.

Shoot me an email I may be able to help you out. I don't know any private ranches, but i have a hard time believing that you can't find a deer... I lived in Gillette for a year and during that time spent a lot of time on the public lands horn hunting prarie dog shooting and what not... I saw more than enough deer. Not to many within 30 miles of town, but further out I saw plenty.

Have you tried glassing. I bought a pair of glasses when I moved from Wyoming to Arizona. What an epiphany! I saw 10 times more deer and did about 1/3 of the work. I used to hunt hard. I bet I covered 10-15 miles in a day. Now I cover about three on foot and 60 square miles with my eyes.

I find it hard to believe if you were more than 1 mile from vehicle access that you did not have the place literally all to yourself. I used to have the luxury of a 15 to 30 day season.
Heck, I remember we used to start hunting the Greys river region September 10th and end up around the house around the 31st of October. And if I wanted to travel I could go to Sundance in late November.

Here in AZ we have five seperate hunts in the southern units. Only one hunt lasts more than a week. Most of the guys that produce year after year, put in quite a bit of time in the pre-season. Most of that work is done parked behind a set of binoculars.

See ya and good luck
Dean

WYORAWGHIDE - could you please email me about the Sundance area. I will be heading there in two weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
