I was just wondering if you thought that a .22LR is a smart choice to use on coyote or not and if so what is my range going to be out to and any other tips.
The .410 shotgun could it be used for coyote hunting also how far out and what shot and everything?
Any cartriges that you would recommend?
Thanks

If that is all you have, go ahead and use it. Stink dawgs are tough little critters and can go along way when shot with a 22. Yeh , I know lots of people have shot them with 22s but if 22s were optimal for coyotes then all the varmint guys would be using them. Your range is going to be less than 100 yards most likely and most of them will run off without being recovered but will eventually die. 410? I'm guessing about 10 yards or less to be effective on a coyote. If you have a deer rifle, use that instead. IMO

The answer to both questions is NO & point blank. Some will claim the .22 WRM is a good coyote gun but I've seen what it does to them up close. We called on in and my brother drilled it high in the chest at 20 yards. It went down hard and then bounced back up spinning around and chewing on the entrance site. He shot again but I don't know if it hit or not. At the second shot the dog got it's senses back and high tailed out of there.

We trailed a scant blood spoor for 1/2 mile and never did recover the critter. The 22 mag is half again more powerful than the 22 long rifle so you can see from my poing why I think it is underpowered.

Coyotes have dense fur and cutting through it takes some doing. If you have no other gun and want to go calling I'd say go and don't shoot until they are right on top of you. I've never been impressed with the .410 but maybe with some #4 buckshot it would work out to 20 or 30 yards. Just my thoughts but I'd way rather blow them in half with a 300 mag than let them suffer from not using enough gun.
