Who has killed a whitetail?

I have killed one. A whitetail doe a few years back. Here in northeastern oregon, there are literally whitetails everywhere. The River bottoms are just overrun with them. They are even starting to move up towards the alpine/timberline areas. A friend of mine shot a whitetail at almost 10,000 ft a few years ago. This is starting to make me wonder if the will eventually push the mulies completely out of this area.

The biggest problem with whitetail's are the cross breeding. WT bucks are MUCH more aggressive about breeding does than muley bucks and you end up with a lot of muley does bred to WT bucks. IT has been said that hybrids are more susceptible to predation than pure blood for various reasons.

Also every piece of habitat has a carrying capacity so, yes the more area the WT encroaches on means that muleys must go else where. As we well know, muleys are highly more likely to leave an area because of pressure.

I read a study on coueswhitetail.com that says that cross-bred deer can't reproduce. So there's some good news.

Whitetails and Muleys have co-existed for a long time so I don't believe that they will push the mule deer from the range but they are definately an impact.

P.S. OO you need help with posting a pic of your buck just email a copy to me.:)

I have killed several whitetail bucks and does.

Nemont- nice pics man, those are some bruisers.

Nemont,

Nice pics, thanks for sharing.

O-O,

I started my hunting career as a whitetail hunter and have bagged numerous whitetails, both bucks and does. I know this is a muley site and most of the guys here are very biased and I dont give a schnitt what they think but BIG whitetail bucks are hard to come by and are a formidable match for the hunter. You will never see a whitetail stot out to 100 yards and turn and look at you like a muley will. You'll be damn lucky to see a white flag bobbing away at MACH 3. I dont know what the future holds for the whitetails in western states but they seem to be more adaptable than the muley as you have already mentioned seeing them at 10K ft. I see them that high here as well. They dominate the river bottoms and seem to have no problems at the higher elevations either. Maybe in 10 years this site will be called Monster Whiteys?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-19-04 AT 07:34PM (MST)[p]I killed my first white tail 2 weeks ago in wyo. He was in a area that hosted both spices and a lot of them. He was in a feild with mulies. I will save u all disapointment in the pics u posted by not posting the pic of my 13" 4x4. The funny thing he was the only one in my scope at the time. Or I would have taken a bigger one. Ya know what really sucks. When ya decide to take the first good white tail you see or hold out for a monster Mulie. Well bam and the white tail hits the ground and lord low and behold Mr big Mulie takes off out of no where. Hell he must have been a 64 incher. I think he was a gardian angel deer.

This was the first buck I took that had any size to his head gear. He went in the low 140's. I was barely 15 at the time. I took him on my buddys ranch. He is the other one in the pic. We were out feeding the cows from the truck when this buck was in hot pursuit of a doe that trotted across the dirt road in front of us! Irion county TX

Nice pics Scotty. This year deer like that are everywhere here in Tx. Our bowhunts have gone very well 7 pope and youg bucks out of 12 hunters so far on out hill country ranch .
Piss on these assholes on here that bash Texans and whitetails ther just envious!

I shot one standing along side the Lochsa River in Idaho headed back up to elk camp. 3x5, one horn grew down under his chin.
Cool lookin' buck.

BS,

A whitetail is a much classier animal than a txrightwinger. A whitetail is a species of North American deer that has a tail that it waves much like a white flag when it is scared and or fleeing and a txrightwinger is a species of North American scum that well, pretty much does the same damn thing.

I hunt in an area that is both whitetail and muley. so far the only two nice bucks ive connected on are both whitetails. The first picture is a nice 4x4 that scored just shy of 118" i was 15 when i shot him. The second buck is from last year when i was 17. He is a 4x4 that scored 148 and change, he ihas an outside spread of 24 inches.

Sorry dont know how to post pictures on this site, heres a link to a picture of my big buck on another site.

Really nice collection of whitetail photos here. I have taken my share as well. I have also seen whitetails at over 9,000 feet. So even though it's not their normal hang-outs it's not uncommon. I have set and watched many whitetails and mule deer at a saltlick. When they interact the mule deer is dominate. I have watched this again and again at the same location and the muleys run the whitetails off the lick when the show up. I suppose in some areas the competition for graze could effect one or the other of the species but I have my doubts that would be a very wide spread concern.

I shot a decent 3x3 whitetail up in the panhandle of Idaho several years ago. I shot him still hunting at 25 yards. He has a 4 point main frame with no eye gaurds. They are a pretty skittish deer but they taste great. I would hunt them again but would take a big mulie over a big whitetail any day! Here is a photo. I hope it turns out okay. Great photos of some really nice bucks. Way to go guy's!

I shot my first Whitetail a 5x5, when I was 9 year old with my father helping me in central texas, that was back in 75. Since then I have moved to West Texas, I have watched the whitetails move the muleys away from here. Back in the late 70s we never saw a whitetail out here in west Texas, but saw a lot of muleys. Now if I go south of Midland I can shoot a whitetail, and I stand a good chance of not seeing a muley. If I go into the davis mountian area I can get a muley and never see a whitetail. There has been studies that show whitetail are more aggressive then muleys in every aspect of there lives. Whitetails will run the muleys out of the area becuase of the feeding ways. I wish they would do something about the whitetails in this area, but the hunting pressure is not that bad becuase not everybody can afford a $5000.00 deer lease, and since the drought that is how most ranchers are making a living now by leasing there lands at high cost. So the whitetails are moving in and the muleys are heading west. This is bad news for Tx hunters and good news for everybody west of us.
