Any one who has a pine valley tag and has not harvested one I may be of some help took a cow out of there last year.

Sorry I dont know how to pm... I dont have a tag there but if you share your info I would be sure to put in for one next year. I have a condo down there in st. george and that would be a nice vacation for me. Let me know if you are still going to be generous about your information.

There are no elk in Pine valley. Unless you're talking about the pine valley on the Indian Peaks range.

Stud horse has a small heard which is south of Indian peaks. The cow I harvested came out of Pinto west of grays ranch. There are elk in there they are extremly hard to find and the only way to get them is on horse or foot.My hunt started in November I did not harvest my cow until Christmas eve. I hunted every weekend to get mine.

Why do they issue Cow Elk tags in an area where there are no elk, so obviously there is no problem with elk? It just don't make no sense.

Ya I guess there are no elk in the pine valley unit man im an idiot. My hunt must have been a dream or something. PRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EXCUSE ME????????? You're calling me childish names because I'm telling the truth, the same truth that happens to agree with what you said???? How did you kill yours on Christmas Eve? Do you mean last year?

Your right my word was not the best one to use. But I don't appreciate being called a liar. Yes last year. I can't teleport myself into the future. I was trying to be nice and help someone out on a hard hunt and critizism is all I got. There are elk in that unit but the numbers of elk are very low. Last year I seen less than a hand full of elk in that unit. Pinto area has less than 40 head and stud horse has about 100 or so but most of the time they stay in Nevada. My cow was not the only one pulled out of that unit I saw two others killed.

I didn't critisize or call anyone a liar. In fact, if you would go back a re-read my comments with a kinder tone, you would find that I was actually agreeing with you in a way. I don't see how a small herd of elk (less than 40 head) would warrant a cow hunt at all. It's not like they're doing damage, are they? I don't have a problem with the F&G opening an area to Elk hunting, but it seems like a complete waste of time and effort for someone to try to harvest one of these nearly non-existant elk in this area. I live here, scout here, coyote hunt here, and I've never seen an elk in the Pine Valley area. I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes.

I don't understand either why the F&G wants them gone. I put in for that hunt for the simple fact I like a challenge and other cow hunts can be easy. So I was lucky enough to draw and spent every free minute looking and it did pay off for me. I wouldn't put in for a area like pine valley unless I knew they were in there. I wish the fish and game would close that unit and let them grow to a decent number than maybe open it back up. But I don't make those decisions. And it is not going to happen.

Hey guys! The DWR has been trying to wipe that hurd out for years. The tried helicopters, shooting them etc.

Honestly, the last thing you want in the Pinevalley Unit is a bunch of stinking elk. It's a pretty good deer unit & all the elk will do is screw it up. Shoot the smelly bastages on site. If you want to hunt elk there are plenty of places.

One of the reasons there are hardly any elk on the Pine Valley is because they aren't wanted. That is why it is any bull, and why they have cow tags even though success is really low. I am glad that they decided to manage a good deer area for deer, and keep the elk out. The elk have plenty of other strongholds in the state. If I remember right it even says that this is a difficult hunt with low elk numbers and low success. The Henry Mtns. elk are managed the same way. That being said I saw a decent bull in Horse Valley by Atchison Mtn. a few years ago while on a muzz deer hunt.

Like I said, I don't have any problem with the F&G opening an area to elk hunting. I understand that they don't want an Elk herd to get established in this area. But who wants to spend their hard earned money on a tag for an area that only holds a tiny handful of elk? Plus put untold hours and days into finding these ghost elk. It just doesn't seem like a very fun hunt to me. If you've participated in this hunt, I respect you, you have to be one "DEDICATED" individual to put this kind of effort into a hunt for a very slim chance at some meat. I would rather buy mine at the store. I would think that if the F&G want these Elk eradicated, they should designate them as a non-game species in this unit and shoot them on sight. That would take care of the problem pretty quick, and cheap. Wouldn't that be a bonus on a Muzzle loader deer hunt if you could take any elk that came along?

I kinda like your idea Leonard. Although, I don't see the DWR every designating elk as unprotected non-game in an area. Maybe they could just offer unlimited either sex elk tags for $5 in combination with any other big game tag for the area? Anyhow, as long as people keep putting in for cow tags they will keep selling them. It seems like there are always people that put in even if the unit has a tough track record, and the DWR even discloses that the unit is a low success hunt. I know that this is one of several cow hunts I would steer clear of, but that is just me, maybe some people like the challenge?

Kinda like turkey hunting, huh? It's all about the challenge, after all, a person could buy alot more turkey at the store for price of the tag alone. I'm sure I could buy alot more beef at the store for the amount of money and time that would be required to find an elk on the Pine Valley unit too. Maybe some people just can't be satisfied unless they kill something.
