LAST EDITED ON Oct-21-04 AT 09:14AM (MST)[p]Hello fellow kali resident,

Just wanted to take a second to pass along some guidelines in an attempt to help our image in other states that we enjoy traveling to and hunting in. We have it pretty good here, but for those of you oblivious to the world around you, the California plate pretty much says to the rest of the west that your a rich kid wanna be that doesn't give a crap about anyhting but killin' the biggest deer / bull on the hill. We roll in with our 30k dollar rigs and fancy gear, gigglin' and carryin' on because we are on vacation. The people you come across are not on vacation. They live and work in the heaven that we crave.

1: Don't litter, anywhere, anytime. Period. Get off your fat ass and find a garbage can, or stash it in your pack or truck till later.

2: Instead of checkin' out the waitress like a sailor that's been at sea for 12 years, tip her and tip her big. 2, 3, 4 bucks a head for any meal isn't gonna break you, after all this trip is costing a couple grand. Fork it over and spread it around. Maybe the cook won't spit in your eggs on the way home.

3: If your going to be guided or pay a trespass fee, tip the ranch manager or guide, they are working their ass of for you. That tip shouldn't be tied to the size of the rack either.

4. Be nice to people in the towns you stop at. Tip your hat and say thank you. Everyone knows what a bad ass you are, the big Kali hunter going to kill a monster. Leave the chest beating at home tarzan, and have some manners. Your a visitor.

5: Tread lightly. For you less than athletic types that can afford an atv, it's not a god given right to track it up and down evey hill. Stay on the trail and don't tear up the country. Get off that toy and see what its like to get some leg burn, and see if those lungs still work. You'll love it.

6: Don't trespass. Period. Most states don't have to post their property, so buy map and learn how to read it.

7: Don't road hunt on the highway or any other paved roads. Your license plate already gives you away, don't make it any worse for the rest of us.

8: Give other hunters a wide berth.

9: Make it a point to help someone out.

10: Leave the potty mouth in the truck, no 9 year old in the coffe shop needs to hear you drop f-bombs.

11: SLOW DOWN. We live life at a breakneck speed here on the left coast. We talk, drive, eat, move FAST!!! It's just the way our day to day has shaped us. When you head east, they attitude relaxes a bit, and so should yours. Slow down everything. Why rush when you want the week to last forever?? Soak it up, it's the good stuff.

12: To sum it all up don't be a a-hole.

Have fun, be safe, work your butt off, and enjoy the home of some fellow americans. Were all in the same gang. Go back and read about my trip last year, I hope your all lucky enough to have such an experience.

Hey five_point, great post! I don't think it needs to apply only to Kalifornians though. We could all draw something from it.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-21-04 AT 10:56AM (MST)[p]Yeah it may apply to all, but it especially applies to the Kalifornians we get up here in Montana.

Good post 5PT!

Great post, I have always tryed to do the things you posted for the 30 years I have hunted out of Kalifornia. In fact I have made some lifelong friends of some of the locals we have met. By doing the things in your posts, it shows that we are just regular folks like everyone else.

Hey Larry,
I just read your story about Jack the barber. He cut my hair yesterday and all we ever talk about is western hunting. He's a good guy and you are right, he was really tickled with that opening day buck.

Ken M.

I think it applies to everyone. Most of the time it is someone from the BIG CITY that does not know how to act when they get out into the country or mountains.

ProHunter
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

MIKE

YOU JUST OFFENDED ME WHEN YOU MENTIONED UT!!!

DON'T YOU KNOW UT IS PERFECT???

WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY???

EVERY PERSON IN UTAH IS ETHICAL,JUST ASK THEM!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THAT HAS MET ASSHOLES FROM EVERY STATE!!!

LARRY, THIS IS A INTERESTING/ CUTE POST. TRUE OR NOT, YOUR POST CLEARLY DOES DAMAGE TO THE IMAGE OF THE CALIF. HUNTER. THIS STATE IS FULL OF GREAT SPORTSMAN. IN ALL FAIRNESS I DONT SEE WHAT THE UP SIDE OF YOUR POST IS EITHER, BUT IT MIGHT JUST BE GOOD HUMOR ON YOUR PART. I REALLY ENJOY YOUR STORIES/POST, BUT WHY POUND YOUR FELLOW STATESMAN.... OTHER PEOPLE DO THAT FOR YOU. IF I HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD YOUR POST... MY BAD, BUT IN THE EYES OF A CALI. HUNTER.... 2 STEPS BACKWARDS. TAKE ER EASY, YD.

Holy crap. When I first started reading this I thought Miss Manners or Dear Abby was a new member of Monster Muleys.

In all seriousness. Great points Larry. Especially for those devoid of consideration and manners. You meant well and don't need your chops busted for it. But I think you're tough enough to take it.

Well, I guess I don't see what all the fuss is about with this post, as I thoroughly enjoyed and agreed with it....and I AM from Crazy Kalifornia. :)

No hard feelings taken here. Seems to me if these things don't apply to you, then why should it offend you???? Outstanding points Larry thanks for posting and reminding all of us what still transpires in the woods! JMO

Larry,

Your post stinks, it sterotypes hunters from California in a bad light. You should have titled it "Nonresident Hunters" instead. Your post just goes to show that you are prejudiced towards Californians but I'm sure you love our money. I could post some bad things about you on here but I won't stoop to your level of garbage. You definitely have some internal mental hang-ups, get some counseling fast...........

The CALIFORNIAN

What an arrogant bastard, when I need crap from the like's of you I'll squeeze your head, I looked in the dictionary for a-hole and your picture was next to the description,

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-04 AT 05:53AM (MST)[p]I think you had some good points overall, 5pt. The funny thing is though, rude bung-hole slob hunters with bad manners, ethics, habits and attitudes can come with just about any state liscence plate attached to their truck, no matter how much it may cost. They start out as their "normal" selves when they leave for their hunt, and get progressively worse the further away from home they get. Ive seen it happen more than once. Just add beer, and they get 10 times worse. It makes it real easy not to go hunting with them again. Character does count. I can see where some might look at the blanket inferrences of the post as being a touch insulting and sanctimonious though...

There is nothing wrong with Larry's message at all, what is wrong is some people are too damn thin skinned to take it for what its worth, and that is damned good advice. This particular post does not apply only to Californians but to all, Larry did point the finger at Californians but so be it, he is FROM California for cripes sake. He hunts as a non-resident alot and has to deal with what the citizens of the other states think of Californinas. Would you thin skinned pansies be happier if someone from Colorado had started this post?

Mike

This was a good piont but, you left out a couple of states TX and NM need to take heed also.

I think real sportsman read this and say this is good for everyone to read and live by.. The people this was meant for take offense.. I still say its great advice for everyone no matter where your from. And for the above posters who obviously don't have a clue.. I'll reiterate Larry is from California.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-04 AT 09:06AM (MST)[p]I'd like to add one to the list. Don't strap your antlers to the handlebars of your ATV and parade through town! This is a turn off for a lot of people and perpetuates the obnoxious hunter stereotype.

The points made in this post should apply to resident and non-resident hunters alike. Whether you're hunting whitetails in Kansas or pheasants in South Dakota, you should be on your best behavior. I live in Gunnison, Colorado - one of the most popular hunting destinations in the country. From August through December we are inundated with hunters. I've seen some incredibly rude and stupid behavior from both resident and non-resident hunters, including a trailer with a cow elk that had not been GUTTED! The hunters were obviously on their way home and the thing looked like a tick that was about to pop. I can only imagine the scene when the thing blew up while they were flying down the interstate.

While out fishing a few weeks ago I saw some morons dragging a giant horse trailer down a road they had no business being on. They knocked down a fence/gate at one point and busted up a cattle guard trying to drag their trailer down this rough, narrow road. They eventually got stuck at a creek crossing and tore the place up trying to get out. I reported them to the Sheriff on my way home.

No apolgies here, enough of you know me well enough to know where this comes from. For those that don't here's the background:

While some of this is tongue and cheek humor, most of it isn't.

I am a California resident so that's who I posted it towards, I have hunted out of state for a decade and I listen to the people I meet, I try to get to know them, and once I do, these are the complaints I get. I get embarrassed when I see a california tag in a bad position...tresspassing, shooting elk that don't meet the 4 poitn rule in Colorado, road hunting, and ATV abuse.

Granted, there are some awesome California hunters, just like everywhere else. This post isn't directed towards the guys here. matter of fact, the slobs I directed it to probably don't even visit here.

The post was made to raise awareness... I kinda figured it ruffled some feathers, but heh, at least I know your paying attention. If it hurts your feelings, maybe your guilty of some of the rules. maybe not, but you'll think of how much you hate me when you tip this year.

I didn't point out guys from Oregon, or nevada, or even residents in Colorado that are very much guilty of the same crap. I can only call out my own and hope that others follow.
I guess its those that don't know me that chose to bash my stance, hey, As americans in the best contry in the world I love your opinion, even if it challenges mine, thats your right and it doesn't bother me one bit. Thanks for speakin up, good to see you have a voice.

I say good luck to all, and take care of the out of state folks that make your dreams come true.

One more thing. I appreciate the support of some internet friends I have made here. It's always easy to look at the "handle" and the number of "posts" and get a feel for who gets it and who doesn't. Thanks for the support, and comraderie over the years, I respect a lot of you guys and might not be the hunter I am without the lessons and contacts made and learned.

Go read my new post "TRIP JEOPARDIZED????", some thing like that makes you stop and think about a lot of stuff.

One other item, if you buy your groceries here go to a different store and buy your beer. I can't count the times I have waited in line behind you and listened to all of the comments about your two carts of groceries and four carts of beer. It doesn't look good and gives the wrong impression.

I think you're post is great 5pt. I know you directed it towards your fellow Kali buds but like has been said already it really applies to everyone. I can't beleive that a couple of those wussy, littering, skanky, trespassin, honery ass, chunky pants, illiterate, road huntin, lazy, potty mouthed, high strung some beachn' Kali boys got their panties all tied in a knot over this! Hell I'm from UT and I don't freak out every time someone talks about our poachin', inbred, utarded, polygamist (I could go on for hours) way of life! LMAO!

Lighten up fellers. If this honestly pissed you off then you must be guilty as charged!

I'd have to say, Utahns are hated more than Californians. But then again, 80% of Utahns are from California.

PS. Don't hate on me, I'am from Utah.

Thanks for the post. But I think you are to late to turn around the reputation Californians have in Montana anyway. But it's nice of you to try.

Jeff

Larry

I'm from California and proud of it! Your post is well taken and I understand everything you are trying to say. I was born and raised in California and my father instilled in all of us kids to act as you suggest. Minus the trash mouth that you use, of course.

I would like to bring up a few suggestions for the residents of the states I've hunted over the years. All of these have actually happened to me at one time.

1. Don't slash my tires just because I have a California lisence plate on my rig, and I'm no where around.

2.If you're a guide don't expect a tip (no matter how big the rack is) if you get so drunk at night that I have to get you out of bed every morning to go hunting, and you spend half the morning hung over.

3. Please don't egg my truck while I'm parked in my motel parking spot. It really does ruin the paint. It's an 89 Toyota completely stock and is no threat to anyone.

Like you said,"Soak it up; it's the good stuff"

Steve

Nice post, its too bad you have to tell people to act that way. I live in Santa Barbara,CA (##### CAPITAL OF THE WORLD) I know there are a lot of good hunters here but that are many who don't respect anything. And they really give us a bad name. Not just hunters but the general public. I met a guy in CO when I was hunting that was going to give me a ride.He asked me where I was from and after telling him I asked if I still got the ride.He said don't worry I know plenty of natives who major "A" holes! Go out of state have fun, be nice and very often you will get the same back.

"CA plates on your car get you two kinds of waves, five finger or middle finger just smile and keep on drivin"

Eel...

Thanks I guess, I hardly call that a trashmouth. I guess I typed a little like a truckdriver....wait, my old man was a truck driver. Guess its true, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I was unaware that a-hole, and fat ass were such potty terms. Watch TV for about an hour and I am sure you may encounter both. Sorry. Asfor the rest of that post, there are some good examples of things that happen to innocent out of staters because others haven't followed the rules. Thansk for teh response...points taken.

Never fails, the more things change the more they stay the same. Every topic here will bring out all three types of Mm'ers ... The "fors", "against's", and the ever popular "stir up some craps".

Thanks Larry, we really are on the same page here!

Headed out right now for one last try at that elusive blacktail.

Good luck to you if you're headed anywhere this fall.

Steve

Helluva good post rules to live by. I hope the sneaky Kali guy who was on our property this year reads this. You aint sly, we saw you stop on the road in the dark (Sat night) and bugle at the bulls in the meadow. I would bet you came back in later that night and poached em or tried like hell to.

NO TRESSPASSING OR NO HUNTING signs are usually put up after people are continually having to be told to stay off.

We had some 64 year old gramma come over to us and ask to hunt on our property. she was stalking an antelope herd and had been for a few hours until 4 guys in a truck with cali plates barreled right by her and jumped out with their bows scattering the herd. Pathetic !!!!!!!!!!!!

How are the Oregon hunters doing when out of state ? Any horror stories of slob hunters from this Great State ?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-04 AT 05:20PM (MST)[p]A good post by 5-Point for all to live by. I've seen it and lived it from all sides. Born and raised in Washington State (in the little town of Loomis, Okanogan county... look that one up) Parents owned the general store/tavern/gas station/rv park in town (a couple hundred +/- population counting cats and dogs) As teenagers and young twenty-somethings we didn't like any "outsiders" coming into "our" mountains to hunt "our" game. For us it wasn't Californians, it was the "Coasties", the hordes from Seattle and the West Side (of the Cascades) that invaded us for the opener every year. Our big sport then was "Cooler Creepin'" (sneaking through campsites late at night and relieving those hunting parties of their coolers full of beer ;-) )

But on the other hand hunting season and fising season were a major part of our families income for the year not to mention many others in the small community. We loved 'um and we disliked 'um... in general. Individually there were a lot of good hunters that came over every year and left their money.

Now I live in California and although I still consider myself a country boy from the middle of nowhere, I've got CA plates on my truck and I'm tagged with that Cali stigma no matter if its in Colorado, Arizona, Utah or even in my own backyard of Northern California hunting mulies in X5B or Blackies in B6 'cause I'm from Southern California (even worse)...

True hunters, like most that cruise sites like MM, are pretty much all the same no matter where they live, good, decent guys that love the sport....

...just as the slobs that perpetuate what this post is all about can come from anywhere, towns as small as Loomis, Washington, the "Coasties" from the other side of the state or the dreaded Kalifornians...

Problem is, with 35 million people, Kali just has a way higher percentage of 'um.
