Dutton Cows

Took 7 years of the untag and now I can't find any elk. I knew this hunt would be tougher but I've never had problems finding elk. Well after spending 7 days hunting hard morning and night I'm about to give up. I've glassed High and low. Spend the afternoons hoping to cut tracks and glassing snow covered ridges.

Anybody willing share a few spots they've seen elk lately?

Is Otter Creek reservoir out of your area, if not try behind it in that long valley area right up next to the state land.

Otter Creek is not part of the Dutton unit.

Have you tried south of Circleville and Indian Springs?

Pro spent 3 days in that area. A friend got a cow in that area 2 years ago. Flat top, Hiked into North Cottonwood and south Cottonwood up to Adams head only to cut lone bull tracks.

Get a horse!

How many times do I have to say it? You guys think Dutton is all fun and games, but that mountain is tough. Did I say get a horse?;-)

Ktc,
This is my question why choose such a hard unit to hunt cow elk?
There are so many easier units to choose from for meat hunts.

Antler,

Dude, I am done with that rotten pile of lava rock. WARBIRDUM says his feet still hurt. He has spent over $5k on pediatrist bills. My horses buck so I am stayin home.;-)

Good luck on the cow hunt. I hope it is tender.

you and bird could use a couple cows to go between them two big siinkys you both have.

Don't worry about bucking horses,it's so cold here your a$$ will be froze to the saddle.

Thanks guys for the info.

It looks live been in the right spots but I think the full moon has been making it tough.

I'll pray for some serious snow and a little bit of luck.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-07 AT 11:12AM (MST)[p]Good luck keep after it and something should happen thats the dutton for ya..

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-07 AT 05:35PM (MST)[p]The moon? I have never put much stock in those moon phase things. They are either there or not. Elk will make tracks no matter what the moon is doing.

I never thought about freezing my ass to a saddle Antler? You may be on to something?

I have never, and never will, hunt cows on Dutton. I wish I could help you out, but I only go during the rut with a rifle during early rifle rut season with 90% odds of killing and shooting elk during the rifle early rut hunt.;-)

(Check your pm hedges. I gave you a couple of spots to try.)

Thanks ktc

I'll be pounding that mtn. this weekend again. I wish I'd drawed my first choice but meat is meat.

hedges,

We are just having fun with you. Good luck. We have kind of a love hate thing with Dutton.

Check your pm.

I have had the tag several times. The last time I never did see a cow but did see a few bulls. My suggestion is to look in the Mahogany covered areas like Rock creek, Prospect creek and way at the top of East hunt creek if you can get up there. We have killed late cows in East hunt creek, Center Creek and Prospect all in the Mahogany and all miserable to pack out.

I too will stick with easier units for cows.
