Meat for the Freezer

I ran into an old friend a couple of days ago and he got me permission to hunt some private land up Piceance Creek in Colorado's unit 22. I bought a additional leftover tag at the local DOW office. Two hours of driving and five minutes of hunting put meat in the freezer. We had to chain up to get up the old road and I shot a nice cow at about 300 yards. We were able to drag her to the truck and were home by noon. Not bad for a half days work.

Congrats! Just got back from spending Christmas near Glenwood. Just for grins I called and asked if there were any cow tags available for that area, and unfortunately there were not.

Looks like Sparkey won't starve this winter. A pretty good sized body on that Cow. It's only the second time in my life I've gotten one back to the house in one piece.

He going to need a tall ladder to get up on those hindquarters.
Looks like you got some good meat for the winter months.

Could you please answer a couple questions about chains? I see you are putting chains on the front, is that the best place if you only have one set? I have a 4WD truck with limited slip diff. I would think the back would be best. Never used them and will get some for next year's CO trip. Any other advice on them is appreciated.
Thanks.

If you have the clearance IMO, front is the best for chains. Its where the weight is... but be really careful you have clearance between the tires and the fenders when you turn and your suspension is compressed. Best of all is chains on all 4 wheels. Just make sure you use bungie's or some other chain tightener across the outside of the chains to pull up the slack.

If you've never run chains before, you are in for an experience. Its unbelievable the difference it can make... but if you ever get stuck with chains on, you are good and truely screwed.

Hi Beanman. Thanks for posting your pics and story. I used to live near there (in Rifle) and miss the area a bunch. Do you have any other pictures of the hills there that you can post?

I don't have any pictures of the Rifle area at the moment. But I will take some next time I pass through.

I don't know how long it has been since you have been there but there have been many changes. The oilfield work has made it a boom town, some might say that it is not for the better.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I hear what you are saying. I checked in the local paper online a couple days back and saw that they had approved a huge subdivision at the north end of town that will have about 500 houses in it. It's hard to believe. I lived there from 1995 through 2002 and there was very little growth during that time.

Stopped back there last winter for a couple days and could not believe the difference in the downtown, plus a WalMart!!!! For sure not the woulderful little town I left behind. I keep hoping for another energy bust like they had there in the early 80's when all the energy companies left town virtually overnight and things went back to the way they had been before for a decade or two.

Chaining up a FORD in 3" of snow... not surprised. :D

Nice work on the easy meat! Got to love it when you can get one home in one piece.

Thanks Bambi, yeah I love the easy meat especially after a disappointing and very tough 3rd rifle hunt this November. kind of feel like I earned it.

While it's obviously much more fun to put the chains on once you are stuck in the 15" deep snow I decided since it was a leisure hunt to just put em on where it was still easy. (Iknow you were kidding).
