I have a similiar post up on bowsite, thanks leftee for the above link.
"One of President Theodore Roosevelt's most lasting and significant contributions to the world was the permanent preservation of the some of the most unique natural resources of the United States. According to the National Geographic, the area of the United States placed under public protection by Theodore Roosevelt, as National Parks, National Forests, game and bird preserves, and other federal reservations, comes to a total of approximately 230,000,000 acres or about 84,000 acres per day!"
That is what I read in the latest RMEF magazine. During his presidency he preserved an area of land equivalent to all our eastern seaborg states.
Upon checking leftee's link just about all my elk hunts (and deer, sheep etc), and many future tags I will draw, take place on land TR preserved.
Thanks Theodore Roosevelt.
I think few realize just how much he did, and after reading the article I did I have a much better idea. We all owe him a heck of a thank you.
He also founded Boone and Crocket (which was originaly NOT for recording big game trophies). It was to promote fair chase and preseve game. If TR was never president I think our elk hunting would be a lot worse now. Far fewer oppurtunities.
"The forest reserves of the United States went from approximately 43,000,000 acres to about 194,000,000 acres under TR. This represents an increase of over 400%. The area of forest reserves established by TR is equal in acreage to all the states on the Atlantic coast from Maine to Virginia plus the states of Vermont, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This is a greater area than France, Belgium, and The Netherlands combined."
That is huge. TR preseved 151,000,000 acres
Also I checked again, so far all of my elk hunts have been on NF TR saved. According to the data I found current NF is 193 million acres, thus TR preseved over 78% of the NF land we have today.
Over 3/4 of our national Forest was preserved by Teddy Roosevelt this is huge!
Thank You TR!
