This morning my daughter and I went out again for her Central Region deer permit. While headed into the area we had seen a few bucks last Saturday, we spotted a doe. She was feeding in some oakbrush just below the snow line. We dropped over the ridge and hiked up the back side about a hundred yards and popped our heads over. When we did, I seen a small 4x4 by her. I set up the gun rest for her and she settled the cross hairs, pulled the trigger and the buck dropped. The buck is barely a 4x4 with a 17.5 inch spread. I don't know who was more excited, her or me. She took this buck with a Remington model 788 in 7mm-08 (one sweet gun for a kid).

Early tomorrow I'm headed to Colorado (units 11/211) with my son for his first big game hunt. I'm so excited about all this deer hunting with my kids. We're having fun!!

Good luck to everyone out there, have fun and be safe!!

Tell your daughter Congratulations from The Chef!
I can feel your excitement in your posts. Good luck on your son's hunt too.

great job i love hunting with my kids.
that 788 is a sweet rifle. I shot one in a 243 for coyotes and it out did every rifle i've had. i put a custom stock and glass beded the action and it kills all coyotes if i ever ware it out i'll find another.
my son shoots a 700 bdl rem and that 788 shoots tighter patterns. i do like his trigger better though and the 788 custum triggers are hard to come by. the best thing is to have a gunsmith rework the factory one

Thanks for the support, I 'll let her know that you all have congratulated her. I shoot a 700 bdl for deer and elk (if I'm not after them with my bow or muzzleloader) and I shoot a 788 in 22-250 for yotes.

Congratulations to your daughter and you. It always great to see hunters taking kids out and passing on our knowledge. Good luck with your son in CO.

smokepole, I dont have any shooting experience with 7mm-08. Are they really light kickers? I have a 5 year old and 3 year old daughters and I will have to be buying guns for them pretty soon!

SOme of these new short mags look to be options also, like the 25 and maybe even the 270?!

Congrats, I cant WAIT to see my daughters get the first critters!

I bought a 7mm-08 in a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle for crawling around the steep after these little blackies out here CA... Sweet gun. Based on the .308 casing (like the .243), shoots 140 gr. over-the-counter loads, but can be handloaded with a varity of bullet weights... It will be my kids gun when he gets a little older.

I would not consider the 7/08 as a "light" kicker in a light small rifle.

Not bad but more than the 243 and in a light rifle IMHO worse than a 308 in a standard rifle.
