I was just reading a forum of some hunters still hunting elk in utah. I just get tired of utah saying they are going to put a season on shed hunting, but they let people chase them all winter with high caliber rifles. What do you guys think? Do shed hunters take all the blame?

FRICK!!!

ADD UP ALL THE SEASONS & YOU'LL EASILY SEE GAME HERDS HAVE MORE PRESSURE ON THEM THAN THEY'VE EVER HAD!!!

IT AIN'T JUST THE BONE-HEADS!!!

IT AIN'T JUST THE COW KILLERS!!!

ITS A COMBINATION OF ANYTHING IMAGINABLE!!!

BY THE WAY!!!

THERE IS A SHED SEASON IN UTAH IN PLACES!!!

ONE MORE FRICKEN LAW BROKEN BY TARDS WITH VERY LITTLE ENFORCEMENT!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

I ask what peak asks? Who is chasing elk with rifles right now?

The only bull elk hunt going that I know of on public land is the Governors tag.

PRO

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-08 AT 06:06PM (MST)[p]There is a depredation hunt going on out near Jensen along the Green.

I thought the Governor's Tags ended Dec 31st.

There's a BIG difference between the condition of the animals right now, versus march & april.

They are still fairly fat right now and still have some things to eat, it's late february and early march when they look skinny and sick and can't afford to be ran around.

You are right but the more they burn in Jan and feb the less they have in mar and april :-(

There are still a few cow hunts going right now. The state allows them until the end of january. There are a few deprevation hunts along with some of the cwmus that will pretty well go right up to the last day. I believe millville (cache valley) is still going right now.

Pro,

there are several cow tags still out there. They go until the end of January. Those elk are all over the winter range. Not much you can do but watch them come down at night, and get ran up during the day being shot at. :(

Out on the Vernon (Utah) Unit there even "walk-abouts" Camping all over. These are groups of troubled youth with leaders trying to fix them for their pathetic, rich parents. They camp 365 days a year and really affect the watershed, wildlife and private landowners who wonder how "Troubled" the kids are? Utah is growing like crazy and with that comes more folks in the hills. Throw in coyote, chuckar, shed hunters and general recreators(Not sure if that is a word) and it means PRESSURE on all game and non-game critters. And Utah issues more permits, spread out over longer seasons almost yearly. Sooner or later the resource WILL suffer. But who cares as long as everyone can draw every year on every unit! And the DWR keeps selling tags. Wonder when the resource (Fancy word for game animals)will crash and burn?

Now Tinz and the rest of you don't get your panties in a knot! I haven't seen any elk being run till their tongues hang out. Over 200 head moved into Jensen and were tearing up all the haystacks on the West side of the Green river but they shot a few with depredation tags and they all moved over to the East side on Thunder Ranch which is like staying at the Bellagio. The elk that keep coming back to the West side becoming problematic will in turn recieve pressure and some will be shot. Its called elk managment. I know everyone doesn't agree with some of the DWR's decisions but thats what they decided to do in this case. Besides I grabbed a tag!! I went out tonight and saw plenty of them on Thunder Ranch..I think they were waving at the hunters on the West side of the river.

I dont blame ya for wanting to feel up the freezer! Infact mines pretty empty, but my wife dont cook much either. I just think shed hunters take most of the heat for all the winter sports. Good luck with your cow hunt, i got a old tin boat ya can borrow!

What is the shed hunting law? Is it that you can not pick up tell april or some thing like that.

I just had a rancher tell me that he had about 8 big bulls wintering on his land a few years back. A low life was out lighting of firecrackers getting the elk to run. Then he would watch for horn to drop. The landowner reported it to the fish and game and the low life was arrested. Defiantly a black eye for shed hunters.

Thanks TINZup I appreciate that....Sorry about the shed hunters taking the blame in the winter. Its one bad apple that makes the whole bushel look bad.....look what those punks who shot the cows did to the archery reputation.....Shed hunting is awesome though...good luck in March/April 2008

You know as well as everyone here knows that if they make a shed season, it would only be a while until someone bitched because you were out there scoping and looking at them from your truck while waiting for the shed season...I also agree that chasing them around until the end of January with these hunts hurts their chances to be in better shape by the time shed hunters get out.
I personally don't think the biggest share of shed hunters are out trying to chase the animals to make them drop. The guys that ride their atv's or chase in their trucks where they can are the bad apples here. If you happen to jump some elk while shed hunting, they usually move over a ridge or two and settle down. I'm not and never have been in good enough shape to push a wild animal very far on foot...and don't know very many who could or would do it if they were able..
It is usually somebody who is trying to steer the heat away from something they are doing or are jealous!! you know the drill!!

+1...............good post Rick........I agree

Tinz I was goin to ask when you where goin to invite me up for dinner (guess I wont). If you need something to put in your freezer come on down the street and I can hook U up with some meat. One package will last all winter.

Rather than "feel up the freezer" why don't you "feel up the wife"?

sorry TIN...couldn't help jumping on that typo...:)
