I never hunt it for elk but I hunt chuckar there quite a bit. there aren't any elk in much of the unit and most of the elk are on private land during season. if you don't have an in with one of the ranches with elk or plan on getting an outfitter with leases there are much better units to hunt.

I hunted the Steens unit in 2000, with a rifle in September. I bought an outfitter tag, and expected to have a great hunt from what I'd been told. Two problems, first we had a full moon and second we found almost no elk at all. We did find some nice bulls in the bottom of one of the gorges, Kiger Gorge, I believe it's name is. Other than that, we found one bunch of elk late on the fourth day, and I shot a brush-head out of it and headed home. It was the only branch antlered bull I saw in those four days, other than down in the bottom of that gorge I wasn't going to descend down into.
