I'm leaving Friday for 10 days hunting along the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Anybody have any reports of snow conditions in Idaho?

im not sure where your at, and you may already know but a lot of idaho has gotten quite a bit of early snow this year and its pretty low already. im not sure about the middle fork area but i sure would count on quite a bit. good luck and sorry couldnt be more helpful.. travis

Like the first poster said Idaho has been slammed with early mountain snowfalls. I don't know the exact depths but over 8,000 my guess is 20" plus. When I was up there 8 days ago I was hiking in 15" and it has snowed quite a bit since then.

I would suggest you call the Forest Service in your area and ask them about access into where you want to go.
If you can get in there the hunting should be incredible as the animals should all be down along the river.
Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-04 AT 07:13PM (MST)[p]The short answer is that the snow depth at the top of the higher mountains is probably more than 2 feet. In the bottom of the valleys there is probably only a few inches (if any at all). I checked the snow level at four gages in the areas surround the middle fork. Snow levels were 11?-17? but all four of the gages were between 6300 ft and 7000 ft in elevation.

The links below are constantly being updated and will give you a better idea on how much snow is in the area before you leave on your hunt. You probably won't find a gage in the exact area that you plan on hunting but there are several gages in the surrounding areas.

With this link look under salmon basin and find the gage or two that is closest to the area that you are going to. It doesn't show snow depth but does tell you the snow water equivalent, which will give you a good idea of how many inches of snow there is.
ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/data/snow/update/id.txt

Most of these gages on this link have snow depth info but all of them measure the snow water equivalent and air temperature.

If anyone else knows of a good link please share it with the rest of us.

Jeff, you can always count on seeing the white snow colored hair of the old guys you are hunting with. It is snowing tonight here in Washington. I am making my famous corn chowder soup and a pheasant caserole. If nothing else we eat well.
