I went up the canyon yesterday with bill allard aka buglinbilly. We seen some bulls and i was able to get a few pictures of this one. If you look close he has double thirds good mass and great width. I wasn't able to get close to him so i went back this morning and i got a lot closer then i had planned. I seen him sitting in the back of a truck.

You should have checked that guys tag. NO WAY that is a govenor tag bull.

What happened to that trucks tailgate? That is a wide bull.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-08 AT 09:12AM (MST)[p]I know the guy that guided the hunter to this bull and YES it was the Gov. tag. They had some close to 400 bulls found and the hunter didn't like the way that any of them looked. So after some failed attempts at trying to persuade him to kill the bigger bulls, they went back after this one.

I'd rather have a big pretty bull over a big ugly bull!
Just my opinion.

Oh ya it was hobble creek, close to the mouth.

Another nice Utah bull. Thanks for posting the pics. Especially the before and after!

I thought Bigger was always better. The SE bull is prettier in my opinion and substantially bigger. Thats the sweet thing about the governors tag, they get to shoot whatever they want.

TROPHY HUNTING AT IT"S FINEST!! WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!

suprised this even got posted.

I hope that "hunter" and so called "guied" are pleased..

hunting bulls in deep snow in JANUARY

what a feat of strength!

Nice looking bull, but a govenors tag bull....WTF??

Somebody threw away a whole lot of money!!

But on the other hand....maybe he just didn't have any more time to hunt or something.

Nice bull none the less, but it's got to go down as the smallest gov bull too date.

Would you prefer they hunt them in July in the heat before you can even rub their velvet off?

Not criticizing. Just curious. I don't necesarily approve either.

Looks like about 5" of snow!
There must be some really short elk where you live if 5" of snow reaches a mature bulls belly! HA HA

Maybe 5 inches where the pic is standing, but the area has ALOT more than that. and there is no snow on the road where he was shot.

he must like elk meat.whats that break down to a pound? 100 bucks?

It also looks like he spent all his $$ on the tag and had none left over for a guide! what a joke.at least he did not have to pay a trophy fee!

sportsman bull. 375
gov tag bull 380 (maybe)

canned hunt....priceless!

the only thing this bull lacks is a red tag on his ear.
this elk was so tame they had a sleigh on him at christmas!

people have been taking that bulls pic for a month from 100-200 yards

The customer is always right. If the old guy liked the look of that bull, and wanted to shoot it, and the guide took him to the bull to see if the hunter liked it because he did not like any of the previously shown bulls, then what is the guide going to do? Take his gun from him so he can't make the shot? B.S. When it comes down to it, it is the hunters call whether he shoots it or not! not the guide!

}}-SLIVER-->

AMEN SLIVER! Poor hunter getting harassed for killing a nice bull, and the guide getting all the blame. I have never told one of my clients to shoot. They all know what they want to shoot. I just show them all the animals that I possibly can. The rest is up to them.

I concur with Silver, it the guys money and his hunt let him shoot what he wants, hell if he decides he wants to shoot a spike let him shoot a spike its his tag and nothing says there is a miniumum on what he can or can't shoot.

the hunter had a number of different chances to shoot higher scoring bulls, and decided to hold out. thats the chance you take when hunting for trophy bulls with any tag gov, limited and or general season. who are we to criticize somebody else's hunt. .. the guy is 70 years old just had open heart surgery and cant get around like most of us. the hunter liked this particular bull and thats all that matters. not to mention he only had two days left to hunt!!! SO CONGRATS TO THE HUNTER!!!

All the talk about ATV's in the sage brush and hunters being lazy with ATV's. WTF Why haven't I seen a post about the Backhoe in the background????

should retitle this thread
gov tag bull, pic
dead and barely alive!

70 years old or not, that bull is a pass on the wasatch with anytag, untill the last day

why did he wait?

why not shoot a 330 bull in the fall? if thats all he wanted, why stress out a elk herd in the middle of the winter?

why let the gov tag go till mid january?

why shoot a bull in the LOWER end of hobble creek?
where 99% of land and home owners already want to BAN HUNTING AND SHOOTING BELOW THE RIGHT HAND FORK?

just another strike against sportsmen,

WAY TO GO!!!

Man! I hope you guys don't rip me a new one when I buy my Gov tag! Congrats to the hunter. Must have been quite the year starting with him winning the tag.

4678aec03a21ae00.jpg

He didn't 'win' the tag, he bought it. But I believe he got an attempt in September on the 443 bull with a crossbow, so I am guessing he would say he got his money's worth. If not, his loss not mine/yours.

I think saying him killing a bull in January will hurt 'sportsmen' is a reach. Sounds like someone who is simply against the Gov tag to begin with. JMHO

I disagree!!

That hunter knew damn good and well what kind of bull he wanted, that's why he paid $82K in the first place!

What guy in his right mind would pay that kind of money for a 350" bull??

I beleive this client was misled...plain & simple.

Oh, I'm so sorry...I should have said his year started with him giving the winning bid? Help me out here, please.

Theres a few of them on this thread. Who cares what tag it is its a Bull and if the hunter held out its his fault but I dont see why everybody has got to bash him for shooting it.

hooker, I am hoping I am not being 'lumped' in with those 'attacking' the hunter. I just wanted the FACTS brought out. I could careless what size of bull the hunter took, or how he got the tag, or when he shot it, as long as it was legal I am cool with it.

I think it's great this older gentleman killed a good bull, but for that kind of money (again, he HAD to know what he was paying for!) and waiting as long as he did, why did he kill what he did THIS late? He'd have had a WAY better experience in september!

I really think someone could have done him better and got him his money's worth, but that's just my opinion.

But too each his own...i'll back off and dream about having $82K to burn on a bull.

Hell, i'll take 20K!!

First, congrats to the hunter on shooting what made him happy.

Since some have already highjacked the post.... If people don't think that shooting animals in the dead of winter, while they are trying to survive, is not hurting the "Sportsman's" image then they havn't looked at the polls. These late shoots only divide hunters and give non-hunters a reason to dislike what we do. Anyone remember the Camp Williams buck on the Nightly News? There were some major public outcrys, both hunters and non-hunters. Same with the AF canyon buck in the late 90s. The Kamas buck. Even Moss himself said he didn't want to shoot more animals in the Hobble Creek area after he guided the elk and deer tags there in the early 2000s, all because the public sentiment is so negative towards these late hunts. Make no mistake, these late season shoots are have a poor outcome in the public opinion arena. Why didn't the Sportsman's tag holder get the same dates??

I almost agree with you.....oddly

His money his bull. no question. and if he is cool with it and likes the bull. who am i to care?

BUT is HE is HAPPY and was he told before the shot it will go 390.
i was not there.

I do care about the JANUARY HUNT.
I AM 100% against the gov and sportsman tags in their current form.
1. use the weapon of the season.
(bow hunt use a bow, muzzy, muzzy. any any.)
2.stop the hunt the end of november.
with a hard winter the critters have enough to worry about.

as for hurting sportsman. well ARE you familiar with the area the bull was shot?
I AM.. compair it to park city 10 years ago.

with the boom in rich people moving into winter range 90-99% of them like to look at the animals, and don't hunt. then they watch you shoot one in the middle of january from their front room.

LOOKS BAD.
they have tried to remove the shooting range for years... and they just might have won recently.

placing a call to the SD. 24 calls were placed reporting a poached elk in HOBBLE creek. that tells me something....

but as usual YOU will disagree.

nice bull though.

I had no idea posting this would stir up such a hornets nest. I'm not going to say that i'm pro january hunts because i feel that hunting is becoming a rich mans sport and all the auction tags in utah are ridiculous! But as for the size of bull its my understanding that he looked at tons of bulls infact there was two bulls larger then this one only a mile or so farther up the canyon that he decided no to take becuase he liked the width and mass on this bull. You all should be glad he didn't take a 420 bull because that just means its still running around the hills getting ready to drop its sheds in a couple months and if you are lucky enough to draw a tag it will be there for you next year.

Let it go!!! IT'S JUST A TAX WRITE OFF FOR THE GUY, IF HE WOULDN'T OF SPENT THE MONEY UNCLE SAM WOULD OF TOOK IT OUT OF HIS A$$

I HOPE THIS ELK TASTES GOOD!!! AT $85 TO $90 A POUND HA HA HA

HEY REDICULOUS?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAD KNOW IDEA THAT THIS POST WOULD STIR THINGS UP? FORGET THE GOV. TAG BULL! LETS REALLY TALK ABOUT " the auction tags " HOW CAN YOU CALL SOMETHING REDICULOUS THAT HAS MADE THIS STATE WHAT IT IS TODAY. " THE BEST HUNTING STATE IN AMERICA " THAT TAKES MONEY AND CONSERVATION! MONEY THAT MEN WENT OUT AND EARNED, SOME FROM NOTHING TO SOMETHING... AND OTHERS FROM SOMETHING TO MORE! THATS AMERICA, THATS YOUR RIGHT!!! ITS NOT A AUCTION TAG IDIOT! IT IS A CONSERVATION TAG... SOLD AT A AUCTION... A LARGE PART OF THAT MONEY GOES INTO THE BETTERMENT OF THE LAND FOR RANCHERS AND ALL WILDLIFE IN OUR STATE.. HELL IT MIGHT EVEN PAY THE WAGES OF A STATE MAN OR WOMAN TRYING TO KEEP THINGS IN CHECK OUT IN THE WOODS..I DON'T MIND THAT.. DO YOU? THE SELL OF THESE CONSERVATION TAGS AND GREAT CONSERVATION TOGETHER, JUST HELPS SUPER-SIZE YOUR MEAL, AND YOUR APPETITE. ITS NOT A RICH MANS SPORT, NOR IS IT GOING THAT WAY...WE ARE LUCKY TO BE IN UTAH, THE HOT BED OF LEGENDS. BULLS AND BUCKS THAT OTHER STATES WOULD LOVE TO HAVE, SO THAT THE SO CALLED "RICH-MAN " WOULD SPEND THIER MONEY WITH THEM..WELL THIER NOT! THEY ARE SPENDING IT IN UTAH, AND THATS GOOD...REAL GOOD! JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHOTO GALLERY THE LAST 5 YEARS..FROM FIRST TIMERS TO PROFESSIONAL. FROM YOUNG TO OLD. FROM ABLE BODIED TO DISABLED... " CONSERVATION TAG" NOT "auction tag"

I cannot for the life of me understand why hunters rip hunters constantly. January, rut, rifle, bow, guided, rich, poor, it is always something.

I am embarrassed to even be associated with you tardos. ;-)

+1 KTC....

Why cant everyone just say "nice bull" and leave it at that!!!!!

Just plain stupid how critical all these "computer" hunting pros can be!!!!!!!!! I am speechless!

People make assumptions that this guy is an idiot? How many of you have 70K to burn at your leisure?

The trophy is determined by the hunter.

+2 KTC....

Nice bull for a 72 year old guy trying to take it with a crossbow. I wish he could have taken it with the crossbow but that's hunting. I don't care if he would have taken a 400" or a 200" I bet he had a hell of a hunt. The money will go to good use also.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Here's a thought. Most people I know that can afford a Govenors tag once can certainly do it again. Maybe, just maybe the guy had his son, his grandkids and family with him and wanted everyone to experience the hunt. I see kids in the photos. Just a thought. I would sacrifice size to experience the hunt with my kids. No question!

It's always an adventure!!!

its a real nice tax write off!
no doubt it was claimed and its all legal!
great hunting is becoming a rich man sport or someone with
a lot of years to invest!
??.. if the gov ended the 15th of Jan... if I was moble impaired do I get the extra 30 days?
still a fine looking Bull.
Thanks for the pictures!

So who was the guide/outfitter on this hunt? pro says it wasnt mossback. And as for the hunter I dont think killing a bull smaller than expected is a big deal, he'll just get a nice tax break and buy another govenors tag for this year.

Hey congrats to the hunter, I hope he had fun, and I hope he isn't reading this post.

Dub

h8algds you have 9 posts and all of them are trying to stir up crap.

Pay attention its real simple. Guy wants to buy a Governors tag, he buys it, he hunts it, and towards the end of the season he shoots a bull, and we assume he lives happily ever after.

If I had a few hundred grand to spend on something frivolous maybe i would do the same thing.

If you don't like it, find your self a nice little socialist country (better hurry we are running out of them) and let them redistribute wealth and hunting opportunities to your satisfaction.

Get over it and get a life!!

So the Sportsmans tag season ends the 31st, and the Gov tag goes until the 15 of Jan? I have only ever looked at the dates for the Sportsmans tag when playing the UT lottery, but I thought the dates were the same.

If the hunter is happy good for him, but if I was spending that much money hunting elk I would done it differently. I would have bought an auction or CWMU tag for UT, private land in CO, a NM landowner tag, and throw in tags for the White Mountain Apache and San Carlos reservations to top things off. That way I could shoot 5 bulls for what he paid for one, and probably end up with something bigger.

Dax

Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, No. Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska, So. Dakota, Kansas.

If you're talking just Elk, then yes, Utah is the best, that is if you can draw one of the once in a life time tags.
All other hunting in the state sucks.

In Utah:

Pheasant hunting sucks.
Deer hunting sucks.
All the good waterfowl hunting fields are either leased or the land owner won't let any one hunt.
I have bird hunted in several different states and by far Utah is the most difficult to get permission to hunt on private property.
Chuckar hunting use to be good, but now everyone and their lover is a professional Chuckar hunter.
And do I need to mention that Utah is over run with F-ing poachers.
Turkey hunting is good, that is if you can draw a tag.
Sharptail and Sage Grouse hunting sucks.
Huns are just about non existant.

what a waste of a good tag.

look at the NM gov bull
then go to the UT gov raghorn.

I'd like to have half the $ he wasted.

Congrats to the hunter and in my opinion i would rather see a late hunt than an early one. At least with the late hunt the bulls have already had a chance to pass on their Genetics. Dont know if someone already said it i stopped reading at about post #30....take care everyone...Justin

So nobody ever gave an answer about the tailgate on the truck. Did the back hoe get it?

did anyone say anything bad about the hunter?

Who by the way is was the hunter?

I'll i ever said was what a waste of a tag.

and why wait till JAN to shoot him.

I need to put in my two cents.... I was somewhat involved with this hunt. The problem wasn't finding the tag holder a 400" bull...we found a lot of those; including a 430" non'typical and a 420 inch typical. ( I have video to prove it). Rod also guided multiple clients into multiple 400 inch bulls this year.

The problem was simply getting the client to the bull. two years ago the man had a tumor on his heart that was twice the size of the organ. nonetheless I saw the man walk up the mountain multiple times with the aid of two canes. He did pass on a few bigger bulls. And congrats to him for trying to hold out for something better. Doc is a good man, and Rod Steele knows elk.

Since when is a 385 bull a raghorn (thread 67) anyway?!?

p.s. if anyone is interested in renting a backhoe I know a plumber with some time on his hands.

Thanks for giving people a little more info on Doc! The man is a credit to the hunting community for sure!

I think saying this hunter wasted his money and a Gov tag is pretty rude. I think people who feel this way should keep that opinion to themselves. Don't come on MM and talk crap about it because it's obviously a small world( Sonofthesouth knows and respects him, and Shed was involved in the hunt.)

I can't understand how anyone would feel better if he had shot a bigger bull. I love seeing pix of 400+" bulls and am waiting for my chance to draw a tag because I cannot afford to spend $50 -$100 grand on a Gov tag. Of course I wish I could, but I'm actually glad lots of other people can. It creates A LOT of excitement and aticipation in the trophy hunting community, and puts TONS of money into something we all care about!

I don't want to hijack this thread but what does "h8algds" stand for? Hate all Gods? Hate all Guides? If It's "Hate all Guides, It doesn't surprise me that you rudely spoke of this hunter, and his decision to take a nice bull.

VERY well said.

Yep, well said drannan. If this post was about a 72 year old man who had just been though open heart surgery on an ordinary guided hunt, people would be praising the guy. However, once it was said to be a conservation tag people start with the insults. I don't know the specifics of the hunt, but for a man of his health and age hiking only a few hundred yards may be the equivalent of a 25 year old hiking several miles to harvest their trophy. I don't like how many conservation tags we have, but I'm sure in the hell not going to rip on the animal someone shot because I don't like the system and I don't have a 100K to drop on a hunt.

I agree with what Torch and Drannan stated. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
First if you have ever bumped around the woods with a person who has some age on them it's not real easy to get around, or to get them infront of something to shoot.

Secondly I think it is sad to disrespect the bull he choose to harvest. The money aspect makes people jealous. I'm the first one to admit I'm jealous of the fat cats throwing their money around buying up conservation tags, but life is too short to get worked up over it. Plain fact of the matter is money talks. When I win the lottery I'm buying the biggest ranch I can find, and will be purchasing every conservation permit in the western states. JB
