RE: Calling

Question: How important is bugleing and cow calling? Is it just for locating elk? Being from the Mid-West not alot of elk around.I had the Opp. to call in a 5x5 satelite in unit 52 NM archery season in 2006. Cow called once he came running stopped halfway started feeding again, called again here he comes (I choked on the shot but that's another story). I have guided duck and goose hunting for years, and I know how and when to call, but that's from years of practice, during hunting season, and going to parks and listening to the ducks and geese talk. But again, not alot of elk here. If calling is that important, is there a CD,DVD,etc, that is a good training aid you could recommend?. By the way if any of you are interested on learning to call ducks get the (BIG GUYS BEST CD),if I can find my copy I'd be more than happy to burn you a copy. Just PM me. I don't want to win contests, just in increase my odds of harvesting a elk in NM this year. I will be hunting NM for sure this year for elk, even it having to purchase a landowner tag.

Thanks in advance for any help.

RE: Calling

Calling is effective during the rut, in units that don't have a ton of pressure. Otherwise, calling can scare away as many elk as it attracts.
The best DVDs I know of are by ?elk nut? ( Paul Medel ?) Do a search of ?elk nut.com?.
These are not hunting tapes, there are no hunts or kill shots, they are teaching tapes about calling elk, and the language they speak.

RE: Calling

I don't agree, I've killed quite a few bull's and most had a cow call involved, last year in Wyoming I was calling at daybreak during gun season and after about 15 min of calling I figured it was a waste of time, I took one step and all hell broke loose , a bull had snuck up in the dark timber to within 10 yds and busted me when I moved, I also use the cow call to cover my noise when I'm in the woods, carry at least 3 different cow calls so that you can sound like a small herd feeding and if you get busted don't use that cow call again in the same area. After the rut just mew softly.

RE: Calling

The cow call is the most important tool you can carry...

When the walking is noisy I'll let out a cow call every 50 yds or so. I have called in numerous elk with a cow call, I would definitelly take the cow call over the bugle. Even in the non-rut times it seems to ease the elks mind.

Anaconda,
I agree....calling can scare away as many or more bulls than you call in if you don't know when to call, how loud to call and what call to use at any given time. I kill bulls every year in pre-rut, rut and post rut using different cow calls. I use calls to call the bull to me and I use calls to sneek in close for the kill. I do use a bugle but it's rare (80/20). Mostly to locate a bull. I recommend the Jim Horn CD's for calling elk. They are some of the best I've heard. He is the western sales rep for Primos. I know him personally and this guy knows how to call elk at any time of the year.

Joe, Calling elk is a huge part of elk hunting, as big a part as glassing elk from good vantage points in Aug.-Sept.-Oct. & parts of Nov. No sense or need in handicapping ones self by being a one dimensional caller such as only a cow call or only a bugle! The key is knowing when to use them, each have their spots where one will give you the best odds over another! To give you an example, 85% of the elk we take are with a bugle or bull sounds. The other 15% is with cow calls or the combination of both. Yes, this is on public land OTC units during general elk seasons.

The better caller you are the more confidence you'll have in using a variety of elk sounds that fit a particular encounter. You can't pull out your calls & practice a week before the season opener & expect to be dialed in, no more than doing the same with your bow! Practice now & into the oncoming months so you you are very comfortable & confident in your abilities, this will pay off in crunch time!

The key to elk sounds is not just making them but making the right ones at the right time of your locating or in the middle of an encounter with a bull or bulls. One must know when to get aggressive & when not too & use the right sound then to have his best possible opportunity to pull this or that bull into his comfortable range. In some cases a decoy can be an asset so should be considered as well. Being prepared is so important so you can handle any given situation out there that may arise. Educate yourself, not the elk! Good Luck!

RE: Calling

I agree with elknut, I have MORE luck here in Utah with 'bull' sounds than cow sounds. I used to believe you need to only/mostly use a cow call, but once I learned the propoer ways to use a bugle and othe rbull sounds, my 'luck' has increased greatly. You can call in elk every week of the year, if you use the correct calls in the correct way. Good luck, calling in elk is the biggest reason I LOVE elk hunting as much as I do.
