HERE IS ONE FOR ALL THE EXPERTS, HOW OLD IS THIS BULL?

WE HAVE A LITTLE HISTORY FROM THE BLUE EAR TAG. THIS BULL WAS TAGGED AS A YEARLING AT HARDWARE RANCH. WHAT YEAR WOULD YOU GUESS?

Looks young in the face....I'll go out on a limb and say you tagged him spring of 06.

He looks like a young bull, so I guess 2.5 or 3.5 years old, either that or he is the Dic Clark of elk!

I say he's young too, not a big body, head or mass in the antlers.

4 1/2 tops....unless he's Barney Fife of elk....which he very well could be!! (sorry pro, didn't mean to steal your line!)

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-08 AT 03:36PM (MST)[p]I'm not an expert but my guess he is a 7 year old bull the same age as this 390+ bull.

Making him a 8 year old bull this spring.

Just my guess though;) Sweet picture btw....

4 years old, tagged in '03 - '04?

4 1/2 + maybe a lot more need more angles to make a better guess. The only way to really tell is to age the teeth.

According to the local DWR biologist, this bull was tagged March of 2001 as a yearling. Born spring of 2000, he is coming 8 yrs old.
Hardware Ranch located in Northern Utah traps and tags a few elk each winter. It is worth the trip if you have never been there. Anywhere from 400 - 700 elk winter there, I have heard the number is in the 500's this year.
It also provides a unique opportunity t study elk.
If you are interested there is a link on Utah's DWR website for more information.

WOW, thanks for giving us that info, very interesting.

Kind of shows us that animals are a lot like humans, we don't necessarily get bigger with age, genetics always over rule.

A bull is generally in his prime at age 9....this boy just won't really amount to anything much more than he already is.

Thanks mulepacker!!

Wow, I was going to guess 4.5 years old as well. Pretty old for that size of antlers.

Slam buddy, we get bigger, just not in the areas we were planning on (or hope to)!!

It's always an adventure!!!
