AZ - Too late to get in?

I'm thinking about getting in the AZ draw pool, I'm fairly young, mid 30's and would like one day to get a good bull elk(defined as being a 330+) bull. I know that I am WAY behind on max points and drawing the top units, but what are my odds of drawing a decent unit within a decade or sooner where this goal might become a reality using rifle.

You are young enough to make it in about 12-15 years...IMO

By the time you draw you will have a heck of a lot of money ($2,000 in license/applications fees) involved, but when you get a tag, it will be worth it.

Like that famous man said, "You can't win if you don't play!"

If you are a nonresident you will get a good rifle tag but it is probably going to take well over 10 years. 20 is more realsitic IMO. Other weapons will take a little less.

You can draw a unit and get a tag for either rifle or bow that gives you a good chance at a bull you want as soon as this year, or as many as 10 years. It will not take you 20 years to draw a bull tag in most units.

It's Bush's fault!!!

If you want to hunt elk in Arizona, you should start applying and building points NOW. There are plenty of units you have a decent chance of drawing with few points, as long as you realize that the term "decent chance" is relative when talking about Arizona. There are 330 class bulls in every unit in the state, just that some units they're probably fairly rare and others they are considered dinks. Chances are, if you've never killed a 300" bull, you won't be able to pass one of those up if you get a chance to shoot one, and you'll have a great hunting experience. If you've never shot a 300" bull and pass one up, you're being foolish.

If you want to apply in some units that won't take as many points to have a decent chance of drawing, think about 3B, 4A, 4B, 5A, 6A, 22N, 22S. There is no such thing as an easy to draw unit in Arizona, but people draw every year with few to no points. You'll have a better chance of encountering a big bull if you hunt during the September seasons, but those tags aren't easy to draw. No matter what, you should apply if you want to eventually hunt elk in Arizona. It's worth it.

I began applying way back in the early '90s, before they had a 20% pass round. The odds kinda sucked back then too, but I went ahead and applied for the hunt I wanted most and drew a unit 9 archery bull tag my first try. You can do the same, but today it'll have to be in a different unit than 9. You won't draw 9 with no points, for any hunt they offer, unless you're a resident.

I remember reading somewhere one year (about 2-3 years ago) There were about 10 NEW nonres. applications for every NR elk tag, add in all the other guys (with up to what 12 points), and more new guys to come, and mathematically the odds of getting a decent rifle tag anytime soon seemed long, I do not have the data but if someone has please post it.

You don't have to have the best tag to have a good time!!

I have hunted elk, mule deer and Couse deer in AZ and it is diffferent than, let say NV or MT. Put in and get a tag and experence something new!

Don, from some private conversation messages, you know I like you, but we sure do see things differently. You correctly figure out how tough the odds are everywhere and why a guy shouldn't jump in. I, on the other hand, also realize how tough the odds are and keep putting in EVERYWHERE anyway and get to go on lots of really cool hunts.

Here's the truth about applying for limited entry hunts, for just about any species in just about every state. THE ODDS SUCK, BIG TIME! You have a few choices to make, if you want to hunt the west, they are:

1. Give up as it's too hard to draw any decent tags.
2. Apply for great hunts that you really want in a few states, realizing that you probably aren't going to get to enjoy any of them for a while, and go on general hunts and have some fun while you wait to draw something special.
3. Do what I do. This is to apply everywhere for everything you're interested in hunting. Between my son and I, we apply for over 60 tags per year, although for some we just apply for points since we know we don't have enough to draw what we want in preference states. We do plenty of hunting and fishing outside of these premium tags, so we're not sitting at home fretting over how tough these draws are.

I've heard some people say it's too tough, or it's too expensive. I think it's just deciding what your priorities are. Over the last fifteen years or so, I've been building points everywhere I can. Some states I have more than others, some species more than others. I've been doing this for my son as well, for the last 8-10 years, depending on the state, since he's only twenty. Now, consider this:

I have a cumulative total of over 220 bonus points for various species in eight different western states. When I began, I was much like many of you, wondering if it would be worth it. My son also has a pile of points. What will happen if you're diligent is that you'll eventually have enough points built up in places that you'll draw some good tags. Yeah, it'll cost some money to get there, gut think about how you want to spend your money. Would you rather spend it on tobacco and alcohol? Going out to expensive dinners? Other luxuries? I don't smoke, hardly drink alcohol at all, don't eat out very often, and spend my money on my hunting and fishing.

Ridgerunner, you're about the age I was when I started building points everywhere. If you start now and stay in good shape, you'll have plenty of opportunities to go on great hunt before your days end. Remember, a lot of guys ahead of you will either draw and fall back, lose their health, retire from hunting, or die. You'll get there if you get started. As an example, in the last 6 seasons, here are some of the tags my son and I have drawn: 2002 Wyoming moose, 2004 Arizona early muzzleloader elk, 2005 Nevada rifle deer, 2005 Utah youth any bull elk, 2006 Montana Mtn. goat, 2006 Arizona late Kaibab deer, 2007 Colorado deer.

See what I mean?

The way I see it, the odds may suck, but SOMEBODY has to draw the tag. Why does it always have to be the other guy and not you. Some of the people on here are like that. Those are the people who don't know how to enjoy a good hunt. They think if they can't hunt elk in 9 or 10 then its not worth going. Funny thing is, most of them have probably never hunted AZ, or if they have not more than a couple times, so they sit here and say that no other unit is worth drawing. WRONG. I guarantee you will kill more and bigger bulls in these "lesser" units hunting them every couple years than you will hunting 9 or 10 once or twice in your life. Same with deer. Look at how many monsters are coming out of the AZ desert these past couple years. Most on OTC tags.

Dan,

Bingo! No one is forcing anyone to contend with the odds. Either you do or you don't -- simple as that. Don't like the odds? Then save your money and hunt in your own state. -TONY

WELL IF YOU DON'T PLAY YOU CAN'T WIN!I AGREE SOMEBODY HAS TO GET THESE TAGS SO WHY NOT YOU. I HAVE HUNTED MANY DIFFERENT UNITS FOR BULL ELK. IVE SEEN 330" BULLS IN MANY DIFFERENT UNITS 4A 5A 6A ARE AMONG A FEW.
