Idaho Elk - Winter range

Here is a pic of some elk that were supposedly taken in Idaho outside of Boise. I have been out and saw a few hundred myself. The last count I heard was about 1,500 elk wintering along the highway. Some reports are saying these elk are in Montana. The emails I have received with this pic indicate that a guy here in Idaho took the picture just off I-84. Anyhow, wherever they were they are some monster bulls!

Can't tell anything about this picture. My dughter came over from Nampa last week, and said there were about 500 along the Interstate towards Mt. Home. After the storms, even more moved down and my wife went thru there yesterday; called to say there was a "butt ton" of them down there, and quite a few people looking at them.

MONTANA ELK!!!

My buddy took this picture it is about 20-25 miles south of Missoula. He took it about 2 weeks ago.

RE: MONTANA ELK!!!

While I saw a few bulls on the 39 winter range last weekend none of them were of the caliber of those.

I have a similar picture taken at Dusk on the way back from Wyoming to Utah neat Cokeville. Not quite as clear, but there was two heards a few miles apart. One was pretty much cows and Raghorns; while the other was more mature bulls.

Here is my pics (sorry not so clear, it was losing light fast. I will mess around with them and see if I can get clearer or more defined pics, cause the first post was nice):

One thing is for sure - the are NOT anywhere near missoula. We dont have bulls or undeveloped land like that. For some wierd reason someone is sendin out alot of spam saying they are.

U said this area doesnt look like Missoula? Wow I must be crazy I think it looks a lot like the area that is alls I see every year going to Wyoming to hunt. This was taken 30-40 miles outside of Missoula. Trust me!! Are you saying there is no more open country around Missoula?? WOW, I know they are building around the outskirts of Miss. but come on no land that is not developed? Come on!! Any way these are great pics!!

RE: MONTANA ELK!!!

JG,

This is the third time I've heard that. I've never been to Missoula so I can't say whether it is or not. If your buddy took this pic then I will believe you. Idaho looks very similar so that's why I didn't doubt it. Either way they are some dandy bulls and a very cool pic!! Thanks for the info.

RE: MONTANA ELK!!!

greatbasin,

I might have to agree with you on that. 39 has some decent bulls but that many in one place I questioned as well. Some people thought they might have been out of the Bennett Mountain herd. There are some huge bulls up there. Wherever they are they are monsters!

Sure looks like the National Elk Refuge to me-that would be south and east of Missoula.

its by jackson hole i believe. my dad just got back from there and has a lot of pics i'll post. he talked to one of the kids that worked there and he said they usually get around 2,500 elk they feed, but this year the numbers are much higher. he also said packs of wolves have came in and took a couple down, also there were 7 coyotes surrounding the elk while my dad was there, but the elk only get nervous when the wolves come in, the kid told him there had been 31 coyotes at one time eating off the wolve kill.

I was at the RMEF show this weekend and the BLM booth had this pic displayed asking where it was. The BLM guy told me he had three different locations told to him at that point.

That picture is PHOTOSHOPPED! Look at the definate line between the bulls and all the elk behind them. Cool pic but a little too fake for me.

Do Yellowstone and Jackson Hole have irrigation pivots in the background? Looks real to me and I can't tell where it's from. There are lots of areas that have herds and bulls like these. Why would anyone need to photoshop something like this?

Yes, the National Elk Refuge recently put in an irrigation pivot. When I was up there last December, that's where most of the buffalo were feeding.

LOL!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-03-08 AT 07:32PM (MST)[p]This is a great picture... My teenage son was talking about the picture and how it mirrors kids in school. The bulls all together are the teenage boys. He saw one bull which he dubbed gay with all the girls. I told him that bull was the only one brave enough to talk to the girls. ;-)

My guess is that the Idaho Fish & Game or an employee within there started this one, hoping folks will put in for some draw hunts. You know you have to buy a licence to put in and so when you don't draw you get sucked into buying an over the counter tag with everyone else. I only wish that was taken in Idaho.

Reason I suspect IDFG is this type thing has happened before.
