Wyoming unit 61

I put in for a unit 61 type 2 tag with the intent of going bow hunting if I drew the tag. I just figured I'd get another point and some year down the road get a tag, but I drew it this year. Can anyone give me any ideas on the unit as far as Elevations, best rut times, weather that time of year, any bear problems, any access issues. I would really like to do it without an outfitter, just because I prefer to do it myself, not follow someone around. I've hunted in Idaho, Montana, and Colorado before, but never this part of Wyoming. Thanks,

Brad

You'll probably have a challenging hunt without an outfitter or someone who can take you in the wilderness. I hunted there two years ago. Very few elk to be found outside of the wilderness during the rut. Don't know how long a type 2 tag is good for, but later is better if you can't access the wilderness. Most everything inside the wilderness is straight up, especially the further you go in. Plenty of grizzly bears. We saw lots of tracks and had one come through camp. Stuff outside the forest is peppered with private ground and access is difficult if you're wanting a bull. Don't know how they feel about cow hunters. I'm hoping my buddy decides to party permit if so, we may be headed up again...

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-08 AT 12:49PM (MST)[p]Triple, did you have type 1 or 2?

He drew type 2. That's different than type 1. Not much wilderness for type 2.

Thanks for the replies. The type 2 tag is just for the non wilderness parts of 61. I am wanting to go and try to get one with my bow in the early season if possible, and if not go back later with my rifle.

61 is a fantastic tag. I think that you should be able to bow hunt it just fine on your own and see some great elk. With the area being a draw only there are several bulls over 350 that make redidence there. Make sure you get your hunter managment slip to access some of the private lands. The only problem up there is the bulls get busted up in a hurry.
