Over on bowsite there's been a thread running now for a few years titled "It's X number of weeks till elk season, how're you preparing?" They change the number of weeks to reflect how close elk season is getting, and discuss what everyone is doing in the way of conditioning to get ready.

One thing I recently posted is that I found a new workout tool that has really helped get my butt out the door to workout, and that's an iPod nano. My kids bought it for my birthday and my daughter loaded a bunch of music on it. I just pop in the headphones and either go on long walks, or spend time in the gym. This is the earliest I've ever started working out, and I've been enjoying it immensely with my new iPod.

Anyone else?

Snowshoeing almost daily...shoot my bow in the basement, lift weights and diet.

After the WY draw my hikes and dog walk kicked into high gear...

I would think that snowshoeing is excellent for a cardio workout. Even though we have a lot of snow just an hour east of my home, I'll stick to our temps in the 70s that we're enjoying and just keep walking. Is snowshoeing more physical than cross country skiing? Just curious.

THE IPOD IS THE BEST THING IN THE GYM FOR A GREAT WORKOUT, THEY CANT BE BEAT. I HAVE 480 SONGS LOADED, GREAT INSPIRATION !!! ONE DAY MY BATTS TOOK A DUMP, I WALKED OUT STARTED THE TRUCK & WENT HOME...KEEP EM GOOD & CHARGED NOW.....YD.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-08 AT 07:38PM (MST)[p]YD, what music do you have loaded onto yours? I've got a broad, eclectic mix that includes everything from Jimmy Buffett to Led Zeppelin. George Strait, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn. On the other side, it's Nickleback, Tom Petty, Santana, Goo Goo Dolls, Sarah McLachlin, Sheryl Crow, Three Doors Down, Natalie Imbruglia, U2, Eric Clapton, Coldplay, and Jethro Tull. Lots more good stuff to keep me out walking, or at the gym.

No rap crap or hip hop, EVER.

My wife can't believe how much I've been doing to get in shape since I got that iPod. I just tell her it's a better gift than a paper shredder. Yes, she actually got me one of those for my B-day one year. Said we needed it. I never let her forget it, even putting her Christmas present (Pearls)in the box that shredder came in. Goal is to drop at least 30 lbs. by elk season. And, regardless of what I weigh, I'm gonna be in much better shape than I've been in for a while. Hoping this'll be my year to draw on the strip isn't hurting motivation, either.

CAelknuts.... I DOWNLOADED....THE DOORS, LED ZEPPELIN, HUEY LEWIS, BUFFETT, HAGGARD, DWIGHT YOCUM, WILLIE, SANTANA, ALOT OF 60 & 70 STUFF, & OLD COUNTRY GEEZERS. NO...I CANT DO THE HIP HOP/RAP BS EITHER....I'M AN OLD THROW BACK TO THE CLASSICS. I TOO HAVE MAX DEER POINTS & AM HOPE....ING FOR THAT STRIP DEER TAG THIS YEAR. THAT GYM IS THE BEST THING I EVER DID TO IMPROVE MY HUNTING SHAPE....STILL WANT TO LOSE 20 LBS. MORE. BACK TO THE GYM TOMORROW..........YD.

CAelknuts, Snowshoeing is a very good cardio workout, I always enjoy it. It is especially fun when you combine it with ice fishing :) Here in CO it gets rather busy at the popular spots with snowshoers from the city on the established trails but if you get off the beaten path it's a lot more fun.

One thing that all of us over on that other message board agree on, is that you just have to get your butt out the door, no matter whether you have time or not. For years, I haven't been in as good of shape as I should be. I've still been able to hunt a lot, did 2 elk hunts last year, and a mtn goat hunt in '06, but have decided that at 49, if I'm going to keep at it hard, I'd should get in better shape and lose some weight.

It's a lot easier to keep going than it is to get started, so I'd encourage everyone to get out the door, no matter how heavy or light of a workout you do. Anything is better than nothing.

Yesterday was a 2 mile walk with my black lab, followed at the gym from 8:30-10:00 PM. Heavy weights (heavy for me, anyway) last night, two sets of everything on the circuit. Today is going to be about a 3 mile walk with the dog, followed by light weight, high reps at the gym. Tomorrow will be walking only, no weights.

Love that iPod!

When I drew my tag last year, I decided to be in great shape for the hunt. At the same time we started a Biggest Loser contest at work. The first prize was $100 and I decided that that would be a good start on a new GPS.

I ran on the treadmill about 3 days a week and biked in between. I cut all the crap out of my diet and added back a lot of fruit and water.

Long story short, I lost 41 pounds and got my GPS. Only problem I found was that I got so focused on the contest that I over shot my ideal weight and was a little wimpy packing that bull out.

I recommend setting an ideal weight and ability to run a certain distance in a certain time (I wanted to run 2 seven minute miles, which became pretty easy after about a month).

Now I just need a good excuse to keep me on the treadmill...maybe that moose tag will come along this year...

I love discussing conditioning this time of year, almost as much as talking about the draws.

Just did my first hike this weekend, gonna be a 5 night a week event starting the 9th, daylights saving time!! Kinda tough with 12+ inches of snow still on the ground but tough is where its @.

I slacked on the weights this year. Had a 325lb bench Mar, 07. Now struggling to get 225 up 6x's. But i'm starting to get serious about it lately. Never been 48 before and not real sure I like it.

got a steep hill in my backyard so take my old badlands and put about a bag and a half of patatoes in it like 30 pounds or so and run then walk up and down, then shoot my bow and do some push ups and sit ups . then always out hikeing or fishing so stay in pretty good shape.

It sure seems like there are a lot more guys over on that other website who work out. I'm sure there are more guys on MM who train this time of year, but that we just haven't heard from them yet. What are the rest of you guys doing?

>Im the mini cameron hanes ha
>ha so my thing lately
>has be night jobs and
>night hikes up storm king
>mountain.

Storm King Mountain - do you live in Glenwood Springs?

It was dang nasty. At least it was downhill. I took multiple tumbles with that thing on my shoulders...I can't remember how many--must be the head injuries...

I've been hiking the hills shed hunting with my son.
(The grass is green here, so I ain't overstressing them!)
I've cleaned up my diet, cut fast food and sweets.
I'll put on a heavy pack later and work those hills.
The same regimen paid off handsomly on my Kodiak bear hunt it was all backpacking as is my elk hunt in Wyo this fall.
At 47 I am not quite ready to check out with an exploded ticker.
I plan on bringing my 15 year old son so he can pack me out if I over do it!

Alright, all you lazy coach potatoes. While you guys were watching American Idol, I was dragging my sorry arse out of the house and off to the gym. That's getting to be a very regular habit now. Anyway, it's 11:40 PM and I just got home about 1 5 minutes ago. An hour of cardio on the treadmill, followed by an hour of heavy weights (heavy for me anyway). I'm whipped!
Whipped in a very good way. My abs and obliques are really gonna complain tomorrow, but I'll be out the door around 6:30 to take my lab for a 2-3 mile walk before work.

Gonna go and collapse in the recliner and watch Jay Leno till I pass out, which should take about 10 minutes.

What are the rest of you waiting for?????
