how is this unit for elk 1st rifle? would it be possible for a 12 year old to harvest anything with horns.? I think it would be pretty easy to draw right?

I know that unit well and have hunted it 1st rifle many times. Getting a youth tag would be no problem, but shooting a legal bull would be tough, especially if you're not familiar with the area. 55 gets a lot of traffic from campers, ATVs, motorcycles, fisherman, etc. You've got to get off the roads and away from the traffic.

well i guess scratch that idea, i hate hunting around to atv racers and if your not seeing any animals its just going to descourage him, his 1st year, but thanks for the responce its appreciated

Sounds like he was saying that the kid doesn't have any PP's. 66 requires 2-3 points for the first season and 1-2 points for all other seasons

I suspect that any unit that doesn't require at least 1 point to draw the 1st rifle tag will have plenty of hunters in the field.

He could, however, draw a cow tag with no points in 66. That should be thrill enough for a 12 year old.

yea he has no points as he is just now 12. and for the average 12 year old it would be a thrill to shoot a cow, this is no average 12 year old, ive tried.

Then you either join the crowds and hope for the best, or wait a year or two for a better unit. No free lunches in CO.

Oldmossback you come on here asking for help and people try to help and you leave comments like that. You must be a real dickhead. Why don't you get off your ass and find a unit for you and your kid to hunt. I doubt you will find much help when you leave jackass comments like that.

As for sitting on my ass?? sorry man but some of us work 60 to 70 hrs per week, 6 days a week and only get 1 week vac per year, so before you start accusing me of sitting on my ass you should know how big a dickhead I can actually be!

I typicaly work between 80-100 hours a week with no scheduled days off. I apoligize for the dickhead comment. Simply saying you might find more help if you change the way you talk to people.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-08 AT 04:59AM (MST)[p]I am sorry if my comment came across as meanspirited. It was not intended that way. I was hopeful I could put your request in perspective. You said you wanted a quality hunt without the crowds and a decent chance of seeing a bull. I just stated the fact that the units that can be drawn for a bull tag with 0 points will have bigger crowds of people, and will probably be OTC for the other seasons. So if your 12 year old is not satisfied with a cow, you will have to put up with more people and a tougher hunt. I have been on hunts in units such as that and not even seen an elk. I like to kill a bull as much as the next guy. But even at 50, I enjoy seeing elk and hunting a cow every few years while I build points is a good way to get a good hunt and scout for the year that I do draw a bull tag.

As far as my posts not being constructive, I feel they were, just not what you wanted to hear. Good hunting. I think it is great that you are taking your 12 year old hunting!

TX, I totally agree with your logic but cant seem to get that through my sons thick head. that was my suggestion to him almost word for word

Some good advice has been offered, however, I beg to differ. I am a muley nut and have hunted CO hard for muleys the last 4 years and with the exception of one year (I Killed opening morning that year) I have seen a number of legal bulls I could have killed. If you are willing to walk and glass long and hard a legal bull is possible every year. All elk units I have hunted deer in were OTC for elk.
