Anyone hunting the January deer hunt in unit 34 NM? Haven't been scouting yet, but I did see some nice deer during the sept hunt. nmhs

I am not hunting that unit, but i have seen some really nice buck ove there, and found on nice buck that was killed either by a cat or a bow hunter, to old to tell though.

Someone just posted a picture of a real nice buck taken in 34 a week or two ago. And it was a real nice one. Think it came from the Pinon area if I remember right.

nmhs, have you hunted 34 much? I've been deer hunting 34 for 8 years now. I posted a picture of a buck I shot up there Nov 12 in the second rifle hunt under the title "As He Lay." Nothing huge, but I was happy with him.

I was just up there for the late cow elk hunt (Dec 4-8). The rut seems to be on early this year, which might make your bow hunt more difficult. In Agua Chiquita Canyon, just outside of Sacramento, I saw a big bodied buck tending a group of about 12 does. He had a good sized rack (probably 23 inches wide), with heavy beams, but he was only a 2 x 2. I couldn't believe it - I looked and looked for any third points, but he did not have any. I might have spotted one small brow tine, but it was hard to tell at that distance.

There was quite a bit of snow up high, where we usually elk hunt (around 9300-9400 feet). We tried hunting up there some, but the snow was just too deep - probably 3 feet in places. It kept snowing while we were there, so I'm sure it's even deeper now. If you were planning on hunting up high, you might reconsider - I think most of the deer have moved out of the high country. I did not cut a single deer track in those higher elevations.

We hunted mostly around the 8000-8500 foot elevations. There was some snow accumulation there, but most of it has melted off by now. There was still a lot of fresh deer sign in those elevations.

Good luck with your scouting and hunting. Let us know how it goes.

NM-MH This will be the second year hunting in 34 but I have been able to get pretty familiar with the area since I work with the F.S. I went out this evening with some friends and saw two really nice deer one was 23 or 24 wide and the other was 27 maybe +-. They are rutting pretty good right now.

I like walking a ways off the road so I have some honey holes that only a hunter or two may venter in and I saw some nice bucks last year. I haven't been out scouting yet but as x-mas gets closer and passes I will be going out in the woods. I like to hunt the lower country. There is a little to much oak brush around the 7000ft ele. but I occasionally will hunt around that elev. I tend to hit the lower country around 6500. a little more open and no oak brush. I had good luck last year. I had heard of a buck around the description you gave around sacramento.

How did you do on that elk hunt. I put in for it last spring and I was in a hurry so I messed up the numbers and drew out for a cow tag near santa fe. I went with a friend who drew a tag over on the gila its in the Archery section of M.M. under NM elk pic. Good luck on hunting nmhs
