Looking at maybe hunting unit 1 in CO. Does anyone have any info on that unit. It looks like there is no access through the Co side unless you wade the river. What can a guy expect on a rifle hunt in that unit.

Better have 12+ points...I know a guy who hunted it two years ago. Access is across some bridge from Colorado and other access is through tardville :) Scouted it heavily and shot a 350+ bull the first day. Had to pass on a 375 cause he broke his antler fighting on opening morning. Good Luck.

I hunted on my Mnt. Lion tag in unit 1 for a day and it was almost all private ground that we hunted on.

Very little public......

As far as i know they have not given out a nr bull tag in unit 1 for at least 3 years. Someone please prove me wrong if you have the facts but i have watched that unit for a buddy of mine for over five years and have heard of no out of state tags given. Look at the draw odds on this site for that hunt and it lists nothing.

Robb,
From the maps it looks like the center of the unit is mostly private. Did you see any elk while you were lion hunting. What quality of bulls can be expected? I wonder if it is hunt that if you don't kill your bull the first day will all the elk be on the private.
Thanks!

Also others I am a resident. I am looking for any info on ways that others have hunted that unit.

The CDOW statistics show 10 rifle tags given last year: 8 to residents, 2 to non-residents and 1 to a landowner. It took 11 points for a resident to draw, and half of the non-residents with 16 points drew.

oh yes you are right, my bad i was thinking muzzleloader not rifle. jc if you get that tag let me know, I know some people that have drawn it before and i have been in there with them. And from what i have heard it might not be that hard to get on that private in there. Lots of 300+ bulls but hard to get one above 350 most years, can be done just not to many bulls to choose from being such small unit.

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know how many elk call that unit home? I might have to take a trip up there this fall and see what it is like around the season dates that I want to hunt it.
