anyone know why the dwr killed this bull supposedly was hit by a vehicle but he was in an odd place to be hit from what i understand he was on a cliff above the road with no way to get there but climb along way around so im curious how a mortally injured elk climbs a mountain

I heard of a few elk in Indian Canyon that ledged themselves in looking for food a couple winters ago. The DWR killed them to keep them from starving to death on the ledges. Maybe something similar?

I sure don't understand this concept at all.
Why is it up to the F&G to play God and choose to take the life of these animals.

Give them a chance to get hungry enough to find a way out to get food for heaven's sake, don't count them as dead just cuz their on a cliff....they got up there somehow!!

I heard that the bull was very malnurished, then I also heard that it was close to the road and they didn't want it to get hit.
Both story's were just gossip though. I don't know the real story.

heres what i got from a close friend who is a dwr officer the bull had been hit by a car and had internal injuries he made it up on the hill and laid down then cramped and could not get up so he was slowly starving to death hopefully this is the truth

My brother was working as a depredation specialist at the time of the isolation of the elk in Price Canyon. He was one of the DWR employees who had the horrible duty of dispatching the animals It wasn't a matter of the DWR playing God. It was a matter of man being merciful to animals who were starving to death and there was no other alternative. There was no way the elk could have been herded or guided off. Several had already starved to death on the ledges. I am sure this bull was doing the same and though it may seem harsh, was probably the right thing to do.

My friend was there when the dwr came by. He said that he had been watching it for a long time. several weeks (in that area). He never knew of or saw it near the road. He said that he saw it bedded down alot. he also saw it get chased by a shed hunter, the day befor he was put down. He thinks that is was malnurished. He thought that early on in winter he looked skinny. He said they measured it when they put it down, It only scored 420. That is toooooo bad!!!!!

That is a shame for any bull, let alone a 420".

I'm assuming this bull was on the Timpanogas side?
What a hawg bull for American Fork Canyon, part of the Wasatch LE unit.

I believe this to be the bull. I wonder why we can't believe that with Utah's limited elk hunting opportunity that bulls are beginning to die of old age!!!! Let mother nature do her job.

Wow, yes he looks pretty "rough", not much meat on that dude.
What a shame :-(

I'm sorry but I don't see how a bull who has lived its life and is dying because that is what happens in mother nature is sad. I'm either numb or I understand how mother nature works.

This is definetly an AF canyon bull. I have a video of my buddy from Oregon 20 yards from this bull on the archery hunt last year. His shot hit the bull right smack in the shoulder bone with only 3-4 inches penetration. We saw him a few days later and he didn't seem to be hurting at all. I would hate to think that he died from that. You always wonder.
I will post video later when I get home.

what type of shot did he take from twenty yards, must have had a machanical broadhead

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-08 AT 07:32PM (MST)[p](what type of shot did he take from twenty yards)A Bad one I guess?@! If you hit that big ball on the shoulder I don't care what broadhead you are using most of the time you are not going to penetrate it. In my experience and animal has a good chance of recover from a hit like this, but it definetly might have contributed. (By the way he was using a fixed broadhead and he is a good hunter that has taken several elk with a bow.)

I don't know if thisis the same bull my friend had been watching. I don't think its 420 either. This looks like a good 380 maybe, but not the 420 he was watching in Provo Canyon right by the tunnels.

Here is some more of the same bull sad deal he was definatly starving, thats the third one i have heard of from that area starving to death!

Acording to the R.A.C. meeting last night in Springville, They are dying of old age, NOT STARVING!!!. They are trying to inrease the # of elk permits by 400 or so for the state. But witha year like this, with the ELK AND DEER STARVING, they need to be proactive, and reduce deer tags by a few like they are trying to do and maybe only increase tags by a few not a ton.

That is what I feel would be a good Idea.

But the biologist here in Utard Ville think that all the bulls are dying of old age and not hunger. Go figure.

I would agree that some bulls are dying of old age maybe even this on I dont know but the other two where smaller and much younger bulls!

I would bet this elk has more than starving going on. It has been mentioned he was wounded this could limit mobility. However I still am guessing old age is a contributing factor. Teeth condition deteriorates eventually causing inefficient grazing/foraging and mastication which leads to starvation. I fully agree with the division. IMO under Utah's current managemnt plan on LE elk units we are losing more elk to old age than we are harvesting.

cantkillathing,

100% agree with you! Antlers on a 20 year old bull don't look like that, and last time I checked, they don't die of old age when they're 7,8 or even 12. The picture of the bull doesn't even look real! He's just up there doing a little pose for everyone to snap shots?!? B.S.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-27-08 AT 04:26PM (MST)[p]For all you elk experts, what is the life expectancy for a bull elk?

Although elk are capable of surpassing 20 years of age, the average life expectancy is generally 8?12 years (Quimby and Gaab 1957).

Therefore, I would think an eight year old bull would definitley be considered "old". In fact look at the tooth data thread, most bulls are within a two year period of eight. I wonder why we are not harvesting a number of 12 year plus bulls?

Would you guys even be having this conversation if they elk shot was a cow? Judging by the record books, Utah is on top of the game when it comes to elk management. I'd say they knew what they were doing when they put this elk down.

Butch, the bull at the Logan zoo just died of old age this year. He lived under ideal conditions with food, shelter, and vet care. He was 13. I think one could expect wild elk to average much younger life expectancy.

Why couldn't they air lift these bruts out... Tranquilize.. I know money is tight.. but come on, just shooting them down.. Feed them for gods sake. What a bunch of pricks! Just my opinion though.

With every post like this comes one thought....profound....just profound....articulate, and well spoken...facts and of course the "pricks" statement just makes it well rounded. Thanks for helping us all understand the depth of issues surrounding the elk issues in the State of Utah.

Here are pics of the bull after the auction (are they the same bull?). I think they show a little better how big the bull is. I am confident of the score. I also saw them/held them in person. Truely a monster bull. If anyone wants to see them, they are in the new MossBack store in spanish fork.

Does anyone know if the bull that was killed had a necropsy performed?

And does anyone know if the rack has been auctioned or will it be auctioned off?

Can the rack be tracked down?

Thanks,

HK

1911......this is a forum of opinions... dont like it.. gfy.

And being as such, it is my opinion that you sir, are an idiot...didn't you catch that implication from my first post? It was after all, an opinion. An opinion based on your articulate use of the english language, your name calling, and perhaps calling a medivac pulled your judgement into question. GFY? really? PROFOUND...PROFOUND INDEED..
