has anyone heard of the Oakcreek unit In Utah ???

I just had a call from an outfitter with a limited entry tag that will be available is this a good unit for a 370 plus bull.

Thanks

In 03 it went from a LE unit to general. The Youth took several 350+ bulls that year. (Got that from Carters) In 04 my son drew. I talked to the biologist and he started out helpful and told me to canvass private for the best. When he found out I was NR, he shut down. Talked to biologist for Unitas and he told me that the Youth hunt wasn't designed for those units like Oak Creek or Nine Mile but rather the General units on NF land. We hunted the Unitas.

Someone told me the Biologist for Oak Creek was butt hurt cause they took away an area he managed for 5-7 year bulls and made it general and the decision was made because of local pressure to get tags. No sure how accurate this info is, maybe went back to LE.

I've hunted Oak Creek several times for elk. It has gone done hill since about '01. My wife had a tag in '06. We did not see many good bulls. This unit is a tough unit to hunt with a very low number of elk. I think the chance at a 370 plus bull would be poor. The unit has been poorly managed over the past few years and if you're looking for a 370+ bull, I would surely look at a better unit. I would say this is one of the lowest quality units in the state. The DWR wanted to turn the entire unit into general season unit begining this year and one reason was that hunters were complaining too much about the low quality of elk.

And just to clarify what Califelkslayer said, the north end of the unit was opened to general season and still is. They slaughtered a bunch of good bulls when they did this. The southern part of the unit, which remains limited entry, seems to have never recovered. They want to manage the unit for, I think, 4-5 year old bulls. My opinion is that the unit could be a steller unit, but with too much pressure from landowners and too many tags, it will never happen.

Wasatch, Pahvant, Monroe, Dutton, Beaver, San Juan, Southwest Desert. Take your pick. If it was me and I had the money, I would probaly want to hunt the Pahvant or Southwest Desert. All of these units CAN produce 370+ bulls.

do you know of cwmu or limited entry tags for these areas or do i have to buy a conservation tag.

Thanks

There are many good CWMU's throughout the state. You can either buy a hunt through the CWMU, or you can buy a landowner permit if available, or you can buy a conservation permit, or you can apply for the draw and wait your 30 years to draw a permit (and I assume you are a non-resident?). Here's a link to the 2008 guide book.

The Oak creek unit is probably the only L.E. unit in Utah including the cwmu's that was better 10 years ago then it is today. I have 350+ sheds from there ten years ago but haven't seen anything close since they opened the north end and over hunted the rest.

Remember the DWR had talks this year on a possible change in the statis of the Oak Creek from LE To General Any Bull, It got shut down (for now) but what does that tell you about the chance for a 370 class bull, if it was any other LE unit in Utah would the DWR even brought it up?

It tells me that the farmers are winning the battle with the DWR. And Sportsmen are losing! Just a plain and simple fact... The Church farms are the big players here. A few years ago the DWR shelled $30,000 bucks to one of the farms here in Nephi, for damage claimed to have been done by the elk. The DWR simply cannot afford to shell out that kind of money. And the elk did not do near that amout of damage. These guys that are running these places are running them like THEY own them... It's not right! That's what prompted the opening of the North end of the unit. And now they are catching the same guff from farmers in the South end. Nothing against the farmer who's making a living do it. They need to be compinsated for their losses no doubt. But, to balloon the numbers like some have is rediculous! There are some 370 calss bull still on the unit.

Great unit 10 years ago. Compensate farmers? Thats BS, I am very familiar with that area and I Know damn well most (not all) farmers cry and make a big deal out of nothing. 370 class bulls maybe a few but good luck.....
