SFW in Arizona

After reading the deleted thread I am wondering what happened to the Arizona chapter. During the USO battle Peay opened a branch here and paid some big dollars to the local manager. He wrote that they were coming here to help increase the herds and benefits to all hunters. USO lost it all and AZ will never have private tags so I am just wondering if a local member of the AZ board could list all the projects that have been done here. Thanks.

SFW in states outside of Utah get help needed to get things started. New Mexico, Idaho, and Wyoming, do not have a lot of conservation tags. SFW is about being involved in politics that will help sportsmen, and wildlife. IMO it has helped a lot in all of these states. With sheep and moose populations having a downward trend, it should help in Alaska also.

Good post Glen, I would be curious to see exactly what was or is on the agenda if there is one still.

It just seems that once Arizona said no to ever having landowner or special tags and the NR rules were set with no hope for change the Pete C. and SFW hype just went away even though they swore they were opening here to better hunting and the herds. I sense that they are all about political gain when they can take public trophy tags and control them. It is my bet that in spite of what Don Peay said about his purpose for Arizona we would have heard of at least one example of them actually doing something for the state if he was sincere. If I lived in Alaska and I have been there 26 times I would never allow them in my state. JMO.

So Glen are you saying they packed up ship because they were not given tags? It's too bad they cant find another way to help wildlife.

If that is what he is saying it is 100% pure specualtion. How many 'tags' does SFW get in Wyoming/Idaho/Alaska among others. Talk about grandstanding!

Arizona Sportsmen for Wildlife is alive and strong in AZ. AZSFW works very close with Rep. Jerry Weiers and has championed many bills in the AZ legislature for sportsmen in AZ. Go to www.arizonasportsmenforwildlife.org. Get on their Email newsletter to stay updated on issues.

Actually I was speculating about the tags but if I am wrong then that is a good thing. I checked out the website and there are really no members here just the existing organizations we had before. I hope they can do some good work here on the volunteer projects. I just wondered since I am on all the websites and volunteer with G&F and have not ever seen a solicitation for members. Thanks for the info.

The only reason that WY, AK, AZ, and ID dont have guaranteed outfitter tags and transferable landowner tags is because the residents of those states saw what happened in Utah with SFW.

They organized and told SFW to take a flying leap.

Matter of fact, Bob Wharff and the rest of the SFW crew worked real hard to get both transferable and outfitter tags in Wyoming. The Wyoming Wildlife Federation and Wyoming Bow Hunters Association took the lead and got that crap halted and in a hurry.

Of course it was just to "stabilize" the outfitting industry...yeah sure.

Why, if a majority of WY's sportsmen opposed transferable landowner tags and outfitter sponsored licenses, did WYSFW still continue push to get them through in Wyoming?

I'm not sure its really about what the SPORTSMEN want...I think its more about what the upper management of SFW wants.

I am on the BOD of AzSFW and can assure that we are alive and well.

Our organization is committed to working on political issues and the political front. Arizona already have fantastic species specific conservation organizations like AES, ADA, ADBSS, AAF, etc...These groups handle all the habitat work in the state and SFW works at the capital. For example, in 2006 SFW sponsored a bill and lobbied it through the state legislature that appropriated 2.5 million dollars to specific wildlife projects that were hand picked by the conservation organizations. I am also on the BOD of the Arizona Deer Association and we got $650,000 for habitat work on the Kiabab. With matching funds the total will be over $4 million for AZ.

As you can see from our website we are opposed to landowner tags and always have been. Don Peay never gave us any money, he did not need to. Contrary to some of the statements made here, there has never been a credible effort to establish landowner tags.

Thanks. LO tags would never have happened here anyway. So do you actually have members at large? I have not seen anything about SFW for years on AZOD, azbasszone or other local sites looking for members or support. I like most here don't trust any organization that pushed for private tags in any quantity but do understand the good work the groups get done with the Governor's tags and the money generated. Tag soup for me this year so maybe I will buy me a tag from Buzz's state. Later.

If anyone knows what is going on with that Chris is the man,so any other speculation on that is just that, speculation. Keep up the good work. As Glen said, there isn't a big push for guys like us to join up or volunteer, so what is the skinny on that?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-27-08 AT 03:36AM (MST)[p]I think with Muley62-Chris- in such a prominant position in Az. the leadership down there will be very respected and appreciated.

Yeh-Commisioners tags in Wyoming are very similiar to Utahs Conservation tags...it all adds up to opportunity in the future for many....I suppose..tags do increase on a yearly basis seemingly so..

We haven't made a big push to gain individual membership mostly do to a lack of time. We know that we are short on this and need to get something done soon. Hopefully I will have something to post in the next two weeks concerning a membership drive.

Thanks for the kudos, the folks on our board are absolutely top notch and are determined to preserve hunting and fishing in AZ.
