A guy I know has it right now and is a hard, multi-state hunting fool. He saved his points for it and so far says he wouldn't waste his points for it. Said he sees far better bucks during the archery season?

Takes some weather to get the deer in there, most migrate in from the Idaho side, south mnt, juniper mnt. If you don't get some nasty weather early on the hunt can be bleak. Freind of mine had it last yr, seen lots of bucks but only 1 that pushed the 30 inch mark.

And with no snow this year I guess that would explain why he's having such a terrible hunt. And he lives in the Owyhee Unit, so he's used to hunting that country. Do the elk migrate in off the ID stuff too? There's elk sign in there, but I can't figure out if they're resident or not?

The Northeast WHitehorse unit is a fun hunt. The Elk are migrants coming in from Idaho there is not an established herd in the Northeast WHitehorse unit here in Oregon. They are few and far between.
This hunt depends on alot of things. The weather is the Biggest one of all. If there is no weather then you will get no big bucks. I am talking 30" plus if your buddy has not seen a 26" class 4 point then something is wrong. I was over there last week looking around outside of Rome and saw 2 bucks pushing 30 and 1 over 32. and that was after driving and glassing for 2 days in the midle of the rut normally i see 3 to 4 times that number a day when the weather is there. I saw several nice bucks IE 26 inch class 4 points. But nothing like i usually see.
Mule_Deer Did you buddy get a respectable buck or did he not tag out.

Not sure how he ended up doing, I'll check with him and let you know.

He didn't do any good. He did fly the unit and found two good bucks about two miles out of the unit, but not luck finding one he wanted to shoot.
