new to western hunting, need advice on public land access

my second try, bad title on first.

PA whitetail hunter transplanted to Dallas. Looking for advice for 1st mule deer hunt. Will drive a day or two. Which state offers available public land and tags (or reasonable chance to draw)? second choice would be semi guided hunt (short on fun tickets, got 3 kids ).

Wyoming and Montana give you pretty good odds and if you do your research, you shouldn't have a problem finding plenty of public land to hunt. I'm not sure anymore but you used to be able to buy an Idaho tag over the counter, of course the best areas there you have to draw................rf

you can still buy over the counter out of state deer tags here in idaho. Just get out some forest service maps and find a spot. I don't think that the deer herd is in super great shape where i hunt in idaho though.
