As He Lay

Here's a picture of a buck I shot in NM Unit 34 on November 12, 2004 AS HE LAY. He's not a monster, but I thought it was pretty interesting the way he landed.

Here's the story:

It was opening day of the extremely long 3 day season. My brother (sandhillhunter) and I drove in as far as we could to the end of a road, and hiked about a mile further in to the top of a ridge. He sat on one side of a saddle glassing one ridge, while I sat on the other glassing a small bowl. About 30 minutes after light, I spotted this buck across the bowl facing straight away from me. I ranged him at 276 yards with the laser range finder. I had a snipe pod on my gun, but I could not get quite steady enough with it, so I laid my rifle over my pack and got prone. The deer finally turned broadside and began walking downhill. I made the worst sounding grunt sound you can imagine with my mouth to get him to stop walking, but he didn't hear it. I did it again a little louder, and he stopped to look at me. Boom. 300 win mag, 180 grain partition through the heart. He ran about 15 yards, rolled over on his back, and his legs flopped back to the ground. I guess his antlers got stuck in the dirt when he rolled on his back.

Little did I know, at the time of my shot my brother was glassing two bucks from about 400 yards away - one about the size of this one and another quite a bit bigger. They got nervous after the shot and left for Idaho, never to be seen again.

Anyway, I haven't seen many "as he lay" pictures on here lately, so I thought I'd post this one. Anyone else ever seen a deer land like this?

Quality pics and a nice deer. It looks like that buck commited suicide breaking its neck like that!!!!!! :) good job

NM_Muley_Hunter,

Great Buck! It looks a little like the Pinion area? I've hunted the area for 5 years.

Nice pictures and story. My coues buck I harvested a few years back landed in a similar pose. He was on the run and I broke his neck with a .444 Marlin. He dropped and his neck had done a 180 degree turn and landed somewhat like yours!

I assumed immediately that you also had a neck shot but to my surprise, your story was way better!

Congrats on your buck and thanks for posting the pics.

Thanks for the replies.

Curlee - yep - it's in the Pinon area. We've hunted deer up there for 8 years, but we've been going up there forever. My great grandfather built a cabin in Hay Canyon (past Weed and Sacramento) about 40 years ago, which is where we stay when we go up there - but we drive down to the lower country for deer hunting. We like to get out in the open where we can glass em and stalk.

NM_Muley_Hunter,

I would love to see a few of the deer you or someone you know has taken from the area. We typically hunt off of Pinon Draw near Long Canyon. Usally on the 3rd day we head down to the lower country. We always see more deer there and increase our chances of taken home some meat!! But the 2 bigest bucks I've seen taken in the area were in the Pinon Draw area. Its hard to beleive, because of all the traffic in the area. Most of theme dont get off the road.

I'll attach one of my Bucks from Pinon Draw. I have a Buddy that I dont talk to anymore who shot one a little bigger than this. So I wont able able to send photos. The 2 others that I have taken are too small to post!!

The first 4 point I ever shot landed in that same way. It actually helped me find him cause he died in some very tall grass and I searched the area for him for a while and finally spotted the white throat patch shining in the grass. Nice pics. thanks for sharing
