Mt. Dutton archery? Any archery hunts?

Anyone ever hunted Mt. Dutton on the archery hunt. I was there during the rifle hunt about 5 years ago. Didn't see anything but hunters up high and found a 300" bull running about 12 cows on the low country. Is that the quality of bulls there? I have 8 points and sure would like to go hunting. Any thoughts? THANKS.

Quality is much higher than a 300" bull. My friends brother killed a bull last year that went over 380 on the Bowhunt. Hardest hunt they have ever been on according to them. If you draw plan on a tough hunt with the opportunity at a true monstrous bull! Good luck!

Chad

I would set my sights a little higher than 300.
I had good success there last year.It is not a gimme that is for sure.
If you want to chat let me know.

Clark,

bowhunt is the guy to talk to. You have got some good advice. There are some very good bulls on this unit. Getting one with a bow, like bowhunt did, is the exception. He did very well. The big bulls are here (400+) but tough to get, especially with a bow. They are in some miserable country. Would be a great bow hunt if you are not afraid of coming home empty, want a chance at something big, and you are in good shape and don't shy away from a hard hike every day.

Don't bother asking Proutdoors.....he's knows nothing about this hole. ;-)

Did you apply for this hunt this year?If not I am sure Pro will tell you about what he thinks of this hunt next year.Maybe not all of his good areas but some to get you started.

If you drew/draw a tag for this year I know nothing. If you are planning on applying in the future shoot me a PM. I hear there are a few bulls over 320 there, but that could be just rumors.

Got it, thanks!

If you draw this year I can tell you where pro hunts. He wouldn't mind you tagging along.;-)

That's cool, I learned the areas I am going to hunt this year by following you around for the last three years. ;-)

If you draw this year here is what I would do:
-Drive the unit until you find a Green Ford Truck, with a mossback sticker.
-Follow the tracks leading from the truck until you find PRO.
-Sit within 50 yards of him all day.

Seriously it is a GREAT hunt! We had a lot of fun.
We did see shooter bulls 12 out of 15 days, lots of times the same bulls.(my target was less than 380 however)
We did not see 1 of those bulls within 2 miles of a trail head. It was tough hunting. We hiked at least 7 miles every day, and it is not flat.
I will shoot you a PM with some more information about how we hunted etc. Not really any secret though.
KTC, PRO, and Warbirdum are the experts, just do what they say and you will be fine.
GOOD LUCK!

Funny, my truck is NOT green, and it will NOT have a Mossback sticker in it this year. :p

I agree with the farther from the road you get the better your odds of coming across 'shooter' bulls. I am hoping bowhunt will give me some honey holes for my upcoming hunt.

I thought for sure it was Green.
I am excited for you PRO. I am going to be living vicariously through you while you are hunting.
You better log on every night and post an update.
I think you have plenty of honey holes, but I appreciate the vote of confidence!
Tell me when you start scouting, I would love to make a trip down with you to check it out one more time.
I love that place, and I hate it at the same time...lol

I hope my sons or I get a chance to hunt it again.

Schmaltz..I hope you draw also!

Should be a fun April-September.

Hey bowhunt....i already called dibs on the scouting trips with Pro, you'll just have to sit up on a ridge with your spotting scope and try to find us!! Lol

That sucks! I won't be able to find you, since I thought he had a green truck.
Of course I know where he eats EVERY night, so I guess I can track him down there.
I was going to pay for the gas also...oh well I guess I am out.

Remember PRO 379 7/8 is not going to cut it! LOL
Of course with Slamdunk on your side, that will be a slamdunk.

Oh no bowhunt, you just said the "slamdunk" word and jinxed old Pro!!

Oh well, that 325 bull will still make a pretty nice mount....plus he will chew better than the bottom of your Danners, like that 400" he wants!! ;-)

If you want to help out scouting you are more than welcome, slammy just gets jealous every once in a while. You got the right type of truck, just off on the color, but I'll have a new truck in the next couple of months. I'll hold you to paying for the petro!

I always eat breakfast and lunch at the Backdoor Cafe, dinner is either at The Pines or Ruby's Inn, but that was on the clients tab, this year it will be Top Ramen and pbj's.

My tape measure is in cm's, so surpassing 379 7/8 shouldn't be that hard. }>

For PRO it will be a gimme. No pressure PRO.
Seriously though you better keep us in the loop on the hunting, if you draw. I have lots of friends with 10 points I convinced to put in for Archery...kidding.

Hey Pro....i'm just showing my loyalty man, i can't have you cheating on me!! ;-) Lol

LOL! CM huh, that is great.
Oh I have confidence in you. I know you will have a great time, and shoot a bull of a lifetime, if not, it will not be due to lack of effort.
We will all be cheering you on.
Seriously, I would love to tag along, meet you there, etc.
I will also let Slamdunk come along, with a name like that, he has to be good luck!

PRO and Slam,
Please do not tell me your going to the "BackDoor" Cafe together.
If so, then I am out for sure!

LOL......i was just trying to scare you off bowhunt, but Pro's not playing along.

That means your a pretty good guy and i'll just have to slide over closer to Pro in that front seat and and let you in. Lol

bowhunt,

The expert? Ha! Hardly.

Talk to bowhunt about any needs you have. He out did the pile of of us.;-)

KTC,
Just cuzz I got lucky does not mean I know anything that is for sure.
If I hunt that unit every again, I am calling the 3 of you.
I am excited to keep in the loop on everyone else's hunt.
Having a tag was just too much pressure, and I am about 1/2 serious.

bowhunt,

You are right. It is too much pressure. I bet with a bow in hand it gets even worse?

Go ahead and call me. You will be riding a horse though. I don't do Dutton without one.;-)

Lucky? We all get lucky and that is just part of it. Seems to me you stuck it out for many many days. A quitter would have never got lucky.:)

You guys are all talk! Slam is too worn out from throwing iron around and PRO...well put it this way...he's still using plungers on the ends of his arrows. ktc did pretty good guiding but truth be known, I think his wife did all the work.

Clark - all kidding aside, you got the heavy hitters on this post buddy! Just from their presence you should know you've dove right into a pot of gold. Listen up sonny. These old timers can spread the savy! My guess is that PRO's bull will be on the ground within a week of opening day

It's always an adventure!!!

AWLB,

Ha! You are funny my friend. Heavy hitter? Damn dude you are about as good as it gets. I see all those great goats, bison, bulls, and bucks you get. Clark, go hire AWLB. That would be more fun than that pile of lava rock and rattlesnakes.

My wife had a rifle tag in 2004 there. She did pretty good. I dont have the photo but I think it is still in the photo contest 2004. Its under Jill's cheater bull. If any of you want to chat our e-mail is [email protected]. And ya I would set my goals a little higher than 320.

Ya geeez, talk about heavy hitters....where ya been hiding Jim??
Now we got ourselves a full house!! :)

This is funny stuff-

notags,

Your wife lit a fire under me to go get it done! She did very well.

AWLB,

Thanks for telling the truth. The little gal did work her ass of for that one even though "380 is a slam dunk.";-)

Ty and Jim,

Nice to see your wife and duaghters pic's in the new Hunters Illustrated! I have congratulated you both before but nice job!

The guy on the far right has been getting in shape for the dutton this year says he should draw the muzz hunt and wants to make sure he can pack his whole elk off the mountain if he scores.I dont think he can ride a horse to well ktc but I gave him your number said he needs a good guide. He had to quit shooting bows or he would have applied for that hunt says he just cant draw the darn things since he started pumping iron.

Ha!

I refuse to guide anyone let alone that guy on the right. I bet he cant even wipe his own ass. I dont wipe guys butts!;-)

KTC guide him???
I thought that was KTC.

With the way you guys hunt ELK, I figured that was a picture of:

Pro, Warbirdum, and KTC, from left to right.

bowhunt,
Please tell us if that is you standing behind Pro on the far left.Looks like you are in dutton shape I think you had better guide Pro and the MAN on the far right this year.he he

There is one thing about it;

AWLB, bowhunt, ktc, WARBIRDUM, and slamdunk could probably go have a good time chasing bulls on Dutton?:)

Chad,

Thanks. I had to have someone tell me it was in there. Pretty neat they did a Ladies Night edition.:) I thought that was pretty cool Chris and Kacie were right next to each other.

With a team like that, we could totally enilate every big bull on that mountain!! Lol

Did you just feel the ground shake?
That was them Dutton bulls shaking in their hides...they have heard the rumor that we're coming....and Hell's coming with us.:7

Ha!

I guess I forgot to throw pro in the mix. He will be the one with the tag?;-) I doubt he wants or needs any help though?

We're just his back up team in case he panicks and loses control of himself. ;-)

You guys crack me up, and may get me fired.
I sit in my office cracking up, trying at the same time to get some work done.

Pro if you do not draw, what the crap are we all going to do this fall? You better get the tag.

Lol bowhunt-

If Pro don't draw, we'll just have to take him up to Strawberry or the manti and hobble him up a big fat spike too shoot!!

Skull Krazy
"No Bones About It"

Now dont get fired bowhunt! That would put a kink in the plans for your Dutton archery conservation tag you are buying.

I know how much pro likes spike hunting. He will be good with that. I heard a rumor he has found a 380+ spike near Strawberry. It was 379 7/8 last year so he wanted to give it another year.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-08 AT 04:35PM (MST)[p]HAAAAA! ktc-

I think i saw that big spike splattered all over the road up by the summit two months ago....I'm afraid Pro just might be out of luck. :p

Watch out for this guide on the dutton he will blow every elk off the mountain riding his wheeler in closed AREAS.

I think with more and more women hunters, every magazine ought to have a womens section. They seem to be out doing us on our hunts, they ought to be recognized for that!

That is nasty. Especially the triple nipple thing he has goin' on.

I sure hope that 380 spike is not dead. That would ruin pro's spike hunt this year. I hope he can find another one?

Hey now... you guys keep quiet about that 380 spike. I've got somebody that really wants a spike. That muscle pic cracked me up. Please tell me that the guy on the right is photo shopped. That guys peter has to be inverted!

It's always an adventure!!!
www.awholelottabull.com

AWLB,

Yes, it WAS about Dutton stick flippin'. Now it is about spikes, little peters, muscles, and fat guys with 3 nipples.;-)

Can you imagine having 300 pounds of muscle and a 2" peter? Ha!

I think it just got changed to a story about some guys inverted spike, Jim!! Lol

AWLB,

I will pack it Thursday.

Good luck on the turkey hunt! Should be a good time.

My hunt will be 'successful' this fall if I get to spend time in the woods with friends and work my butt off, regardless of whether I let an arrow fly or not. I am looking forward to scouting trips with the likes of slam dunk and bowhunt, my buddy who applied with me, swbuckmaster, broadsideshot, and others. If I put a bull on the ground it will be pure heaven. The Dutton is tough and I don't think their is any such thing as a "slam dunk" archery hunt, but I am looking forward to the challenge. Success will NOT be measured in inches, but in memories made with good friends, and by hunting the coolest animal on the planet on the coolest unit on the planet. Thanks for the kind words and the well wishing. My stomach gets in knots just typing about my upcoming adventures.

PRO,

Quit being a panzy and call it like it is: Your hunt will not be successful unless you kill a GIANT.

Just given ya crap, I agree, the opportunity to hunt is the reward.
