I have drawn an AZ unit 10 archery bull tag. After 11 years of waiting, I want to make this hunt the best I possibly can. I am starting to put my scouting procedure together, and was wondering if I could get a little info from some of you.

1- I have the unit 10 map the game and fish send out. What would be another good map to obtain??

2- I noticed on the map that there is a lot of checker board private and state land, is private a problem on this unit?

3- During the september hunt, what will the tempetures and night mostly be??

4- Is the start of the hunt better usually, or is the end of the hunt the best. I have 9 days counting weekends to hunt. Most feasible would be all 9 in one trip.

Any suggestions on what I may/will need will be greatly appreciated. I live in Southern Utah, so I should be able to make 2-3 scouting trips prior to the hunt.

Thank you,

Both quad and the Kaibab National Forest maps would be helpful.

The checkerboard areas can be an issue. The Boquillas (sp?) Ranch (which is quite a bit of that checkerboard) was bought by the Navajo Nation about 5-7 years back and along with some other ranches, closed some of Unit 10 to vehicles. That is why some of us quit hunting Unit 10. I am unsure now what areas are now open - you'll have to do your research. Sorry I can't be more help.

Expect 45ish degree mornings and 85ish degree days.

You never quite know when the rut will start, but I have always found better luck the second half. The monsoon rains seem to play a part in when. The bulls will be somewhat nocturnal -really active from about 8PM to about 5AM.

Watch for rattlesnakes in the evenings particuarly if you hunt below the Ponderosa pine areas - I had a bad experience walking out one evening after shooting light.

You got a good tag - there are record book bulls in that Unit. Good luck and have fun.

I have the same tag. Been hunting there for a long time. There is so much public land you should have nothing to worry about. Take lots of water and lots of gas.

It's Bush's fault!!!

I personally like the huntmaps put out by www.huntscout.com they show practically every open road and a very good amount of the water sources.

As for private land issues there is a ton of public land just be sure not to anger any ranchers by driving quads where you are not suppose to. Obey all the signs and rules and you won't have a problem.

The temperature varies every year. I helped a friend on that hunt 2 years ago and it was getting down to 30 at night and up to 80 in the day. It also depends on if you are in the juniper or pine country.

I have heard that the later part of the hunt is better but I was up on the first part of the hunt and we had plenty of bugling and plenty of bulls responding to cow calls. It all depends on how the rut is going.
