Pedestal Mount Question

I have deciced to go with a pedestal mount for my bull that I killed last year. I have a brother-in-law that has a cabinet shop I thought I could really go over board and make this thing nice. However, I don't have a clue as to what dimensions to use and can't find much on the internet. He's not a huge huge bull, 350" class. Any info would be appreciated.

That is a hard question to answer not knowing where you are going to put it and the dimensions of the room. You will need to know how much height you have in the area you plan on putting the bull in. If your ceilings are high, then height dimensions are not an issue. The size of the base will depend on if you like a large cabinet type base, or something that will just hold your mount up. The only real thing you must be concerned with is the balance and strength. You will need to be sure the base will not tip over, or not hold the weight of the mount. This isn't hard to do but clearly a concern..
When we built one for the wife's bull, our base was basically a 6-sided pad about 36"X36" that is only about 10 inches high, due to the height of the bull, and the height of our ceilings. We have a 4'X6' post coming up from near the rear of the base which give it good balance. The bulls nose is only halfway between the ceiling and floor, but with our dimensions, that is the only way we could do it and still have the mount in our house. A cathederal ceiling leaves the imagination to run wild with possiblities for different and interesting pedestals.
Good luck and keep us posted with a photo when you make a decision and get it done!

He is not huge just a poor little 350 class bull huh, I would probably just put the antlers in the shed. No sense in mounting a dink like that.
Most people do not see a 350 bull in their life.

Echo,

I don't know if you are interested in going away from the traditional pedistal mount, but this is a unique way of doing it. This system allows you to have a wall mount and/or a pedistal. The guy that came up with this is a taxidermist, but will just sell the mounting system if you are interested.

Hey Bowhunt sorry for the ignorance about the size of my bull. I do feel very fortunate for the opprotunity to have killed such a great bull. However, here in Utah I did feel the pressure once I drew the tag that I would have to harvest something huge. Two good friends of mine killed bulls over 400 last year, so I guess to them mine is a dink. lol

JDC,
I was wondering if you have any experience with the animals in motion pedestal mount setup? I am curious if there are any problems holding up bulky/heavy animals such as elk? It seems like the weight would need to be well balanced or there could be problems? It looks like a great setup and I may try it on the bull I got last year! I really like pedestal mounts and it would really be an advantage to be able to move the mount around somewhat on the wall to get the best pose.

I do not have any mounts that use the animals in motion setup, but I have seen several of them. Sam is a good friend and I will certainly use this system at some time in the future. You have probably seen the full body mount dall sheep on his home page. Sam uses that one a lot in his displays and the center of gravity is set out further from the wall than a standard wall mount is and he has never had a problem. I would recommend that you give Sam a call and let him answer your questions. I am sure that he can do a much better job that I could. Just an FYI, he is a very good taxidermist, so this is not just an idea thrown together by someone with out any experience.

I hope that this helps,
