LAST EDITED ON Apr-25-08 AT 02:06PM (MST)[p]-Keep the general season any bull units as is, Label them -General Season Standard Units
-Equally divide the existing Elk units into two categories: 1) High Quality, 2) Quality.
-Bull/cow ratios, and herd dynamics should be set by a group of Biologists, based on health and unit capacity.
-Numbers set by the biology board will be followed and maintained. NO EXCEPTIONS
-Mandatory harvest reporting on every tag, filled or unfilled.
-Spike and cow hunting would be rotated between units as needed, only as a management tool.
-The hunter has to choose one and only one type of elk to hunt/apply for each year. (G.S. Standard, Quality or High Quality)

Archery dates: Aug 21 - Sept 17
Muzzy dates: Sept 18 - Sept 26
Rifle dates: Sept 27 - Oct 7

50% of tags go to Rifle
20% of tags go to Muzzy
30% of tags go to Archery

High Quality units:
Manage for a healthy maximum population of "High Quality" bulls. Limit number of tags. Draw odds would most likely follow suit.

Quality units:
Manage for a healthy maximum population of "Quality" bulls, or mid level bulls. These units should be comprised of the larger herds in the state, for the ability to offer more tags. Issue enough tags to have better opportunity and lesser quality than the High Quality Units.

G.S. Standard Units:
Manage for a healthy maximum population of "lesser quality" bulls. Issue tags accordingly to fall into place.

I am trying to appeal to every type of hunter as fairly as possible, and trying to allow the most potential hunting opportunity. As well as have valid credible input to how our herds are managed.
I do need some help on a few issues though. I know that it would be difficult if not impossible to replace our current system with this, but How would you run the point system? I thought about only taking away only the points it took to draw the unit, meaning if a Quality unit took on average 6 points to draw and you had 10, you would retain 4 points?
Also would you "charge" 1 point to hunt a GS standard unit?
I also really like the idea of having Weapon rut hunts as choices. Meaning bowhunters could hunt the peak rut in a certain unit, and the rifle hunters could have the peak rut as well in a different unit the same year? But how would it all fit together? And dont give me the its too complicated BS.
I also believe that archery hunters should be used as managment tools, and could be great way to up a states revenues from tag sells. More tags issued and few animals taken.
What are your thoughts?

Sounds like the rifle tags are too few, since the rifle hunters make up much more than 50% of the hunters. Even though I like it, I don't think it will fly. I think more like 65, 10, 25 or 62.5, 12.5, 25.

The muzzleloader tags are WAY to many.

The archery starts too early and lasts too long.

The rifle hunt is too early, give a week between muzzy and rifle to allow for some off-time and mating.

I like the tag designations - this is just like NM and a good idea in my mind, except NM gives way too many guided tags.

I like it, with a few exceptions. Keep the archery like it is today and swap the muzz and rifle. I like the idea of a week off between muzz and rifle. Tag alotment is good. I think alot of rifle hunters would pick up a muzz if this is how it was. I know I would.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-08 AT 09:55PM (MST)[p]Good idea Maybe?? Make all three hunts 33.3%. B,S on moveing archery back !!! and changing muzz with rifle!!! If anything split the month of Sept with archery & muzzy and move rifle into Oct.

I forgot the bonus point thing. Do it like Colorado, the applicants with the most points draw! period. That way you won't have to wait 15 years to draw a tag,(unless your a lucky sob).

WHERE IS "Pro" BONO AT???

MAYBE HE CAN CHIME IN WITH WANTING EXACT NUMBERS???

RATIO'S???

BULL PER COW NUMBERS???

BULLS PER 1,000 COWS???

AGE OBJECTIVES???

HE STILL AIN'T FIGURED OUT WHY THE RATIO'S ARE ALL SCREWED UP???

HE WON'T ADMIT IT WAS THE DWR,BIOLOGISTS & PISS POOR MANAGEMENT THAT GOT THEM WHERE THEY ARE TODAY!!!

THE ONLY FRICKEN THING HE THINKS ABOUT IS KILLING MORE BULLS TO GET THE RATIO'S IN LINE!!!

NEVER ONCE HAVE I SEEN HIM POST A WAY TO HELP BRING THE COWS BACK!!!

HOPEFULLY,AND I THINK HE IS,SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW MORE COW SLAUGHTERS & PISSCUTTER HUNTS IS "NOT" THE ANSWER ON LE UNITS???

YOU'D BETTER GET YOUR CALCULATIONS READY,Pro WILL BE WANTING EXACT MATHEMATIC EQUASIONS PRONTO!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS ALOT OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS IMAGE IN YOUR PEA BRAIN BUT DUE TO POOR SHOOTING TACTICS I'M STILL KICKIN!!!

Bessy Obama, long on rhetoric and short on substance. You spout off on what an 'ideal' elk unit would look like. Yet, you are vague on how you would accomplish such a unit. The spin stops here Barak O Bob, do tell "how" you would manage to have 8+ year old bulls harvested, maintain 35-40:100 ratios, have rifle hunts in the rut at 90%+ success rates. Using a magic wand is the only way I see it being done as you proclaim it so easy to do. Give me some substance Bessy Obama!

PRO

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah

The rifle bull hunt should be later. Way too many big rutting bulls would get killed the first season those dates were allowed.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-28-08 AT 02:06PM (MST)[p]do that and watch the quality of bulls go to sh!TT in a hurry. you must be out of your mind.

In a perfect world biologically there probably wouldn't be rifle hunts in the rut. But since Utah doesnt seem to think that anything needs to be managed biologically, its all about the money and the popularity contest.
Nevadakid what is your reasoning?

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well preserved body, but to skid in sideways totally worn out shouting HOLY SH!T WHAT A RIDE!!!
