I saw your post yesterday, I had NOTHING to do with it getting nuked.

I am unsure what you are asking, what do the 'biologists' want me to do? I will go on record and say that if I can't get with bow range (less than 45 yards) of a bull well over 380 I will be eating tag soup.

How long do you have to wait in Utah to draw a Premium Elk Tag? I have been waiting 10 years to get a chance to kill a 320-350 bull here in Oregon.

I said MONTHS ago that this was my standard. I have been trying to tell you guys I am NOT a pisscutter hunter. Just because bessy says it, does NOT make it so. I bet bessy would shot bulls I WILL pass this year. I have NEVER advocated diminishing 'quality', in fact what I have been in favor of will KEEP 'quality' high for a sustainable future instead of the shortedsighted path we are currently headed down. It is called MANAGEMENT, and being PRO-active instead of waiting until things are so jacked up the recovery time will be significant. Go back and look what I said a year ago, I have NOT changed my stance nor have I changed my 'standards' on the caliber of bull I am after.

Be careful. 380+ or nothing is a tall order. However, with bull to cow ratios so out of whack 9or so thhey say), would that be hypocrisy to eat tag soup with a nice 320 bull at 30 yards and passing him? No trying to start a war, I wish you luck. I think Dutton is going to produce some scary bulls this year. Certainly we all want the biggest bulls, but not culling a bull because he is not 380 + would be irresponsible?

What are your thoughts?

I certainly do not want to argue with pro. I wish him luck. I think there are some smoker bulls to be had this year based on prior experience. I think every hunter should have an opportunity to hunt what he wants. In this case, pro wants 380+. Utah produces them and I cannot say I blame him for wanting one.

I was just wondering what his thoughts were based on the arguments that the ratios are to balanced. If he felt that after many days of trying for 380+, if he did not get it done, if he felt a responsibility to cull one bull out of the herd even if he was a very nice 320 bull?

I disagree. This whole spin in nonsensical. How does me saying the DWR should be issuing MORE tags, thus giving MORE opportunity, have anything to do with me killing a 320 class bull? If I were to kill a 320 class bull it would LOWER the harvest age average which would make you all say the herd is right where it should be and show that as 'evidence' that all is well in Lala land.

I selected archery season for many reasons, but by doing so my odds of putting a bull on the ground are 30-40% instead of the 90% with a rifle. So, that means I am under NO pressure to harvest an elk due to the expectations from the DWR of a 30-40% success rate from archers.

How is me being a selective hunter while saying bull tag numbers MUST increase and cow tags decrease make me a hypocrit? You guys are funny!

Good luck pro. To draw a tag that has 30-40% sucess rate instead of 90-100% rifle rut hunt says it all. It's about the hunt and experience not just the killin and braggin. I like to bow hunt elk. Not sure I have what it takes to burn many points for a LE Archery tag. You have my respect. Score is over rated. Kill you a dandy bull. Good luck on a great hunt! Greg

I have to disagree with you. Just because pro decided to bow hunt, and he enjoys bow hunting, does not make him some kind of martar. He has been very outspoken about his lofty goals of 380+ so IT IS all about score. Not over-rated at all. I hope he does well also, but since he has been ragging on us, we need to remind him often of his goals and won't let him come back with anything less.:)
 
I think what all of you are missing is that Pro has already done his part in managemnt on this unit. I hope he does not get upset with me. But fyi Pro has two bow kills between 360 and 379 already why should he settle for anything less than 380?
He has killed his pisscutters!!!

Hiking is hiking and hunting is hunting. It is all about killing stuff. I don't care if you shoot em with a bow or rifle. You got to get bloody or it sucks.;-)

I want to see your previous pisscutters pro. I need to analyze them so I can be sure you do not get release happy and kill a 379 7/8 pup. Are you talking 380+ net or gross? Lets get that cleared up early.;-)

We will see about pictures? WTF is that? I will come down and get pictures if I have to?;-)

record bull with your tag, but I do belive
you are putting way to much pressure on yourself
and I hope that you don,t let it ruin your hunt.

330 to 340 bulls can be just as hard to kill
as a 380 bull, but from all the talk you have
put up, I believe you are the best elk hunter
in Utah, In another post you mentioned how
many big bulls you called to within bow range
last year. To me harvesting anything with a bow
or muzzy is an acomplishment.

I for one would rather you harvest a 330 to 350
bull if you don,t kill that 380 bull just because
I don,t want you to come on here at the end off
your hunt and say you passed a 379 bull, I doubt
you will be able to handle the critisism.

I will personally give you 10" of leeway. If you pass a 379 you got rocks in your head. If you can decipher the difference between 379 and 380 on the hoof, you are hands down the best trophy elk hunter I have ever seen.

pro, just go have fun and shoot a bull you like. It is easier that way? :)
 
I fully intend to have a blast on my hunt. As MulePacker mentioned I have already taken two "pisscutters" off the Dutton, one in 2000 the other in 2003 on the AR301 tag. They went over 360 but under 380, so I want to improve on what I have already taken or come home empty and be 100% fine with that. My first goal is to have a great time with the good friends I will have along with me on my quest. I look forward to the challenge of getting within bow range of 'my' bull.

My camera might be 'broke'. I have yet to find a camera that doesn't break when photos of my mug are taken. Maybe I'll have one if my "rainbow warriors" draw a sketch or two. ;-)

I predict that Pro and Mulepacker will both either miss their target or come home empty handed. I am not trying to be mean, and I hope it does not go that way.
I want you both to kill big 400 inch bulls, but that is very unlikely. There are not many of them, and you will not be able to judge with exactness.
Mule put a lot of pressure on himself when he told everyone a GOOD HUNTER could kill a huge bull. The proof will be in the horns. lol

I think you will both have fun, and have great hunts, just tough to live up to the goals you have set.
So prove me wrong, go get er done!

Robb 28 days is better than 23 no matter how you look at it. You know how the system works you cant eat the whole elephant at once. You have to do it bite by bite. If pro was hunting a unit that had spike hunters all over it he would be glad to have the last week to hunt the bulls by himself or with the other LE tag holders.

Spike hunts suck!!!

If you think you can get the rifle hunters out of the rut than go for it.

Pro I will be on your hunt for 5 days with either a video camera or a call in my mouth watching you dump that big stinky sob this fall I hear we have 3 tags to fill on the Dutton.
I also have 2 other friends that drew archery tags 1 tag on the Manti and one on the San Juan.

I am pretty sure most everyone that has posted on this thread has at some point met Pro or definitely knows who pro is. Pro can take a joke or dish out a joke better than anybody I know.

A question has come up about Pro?s shooting and hunting abilities and who is going to hire to be part of his hunting posse.

He hired me to help with his shooting.
He will probably hire NUNA for his packing ability.
He hired Jerry for his cow call he can make with his lips.
He hired callofthewild for his elk points and bugle he can make with his butt.
He hired treehuntinghugger for his artistic ability to draw rainbows and elk antlers.
I am not sure if he has hired KTC yet but I hear he gives greeat back rubs and has killed two bulls on this unit with his rifle?

All the numbers talk cracks me up. I've seen literally 100's of trophy bulls scored and a bigger number doesn't mean a bigger bull. I had a client pass on a bull I loved that was killed the next day by somebody else. My clients bull scored 374. The bull he passed 357. The 357 was WAY more bull. Had you weighed the racks it would have been nearly double. Mass and width don't score but I sure like it. I drew the San Juan archery and my goal is 210+ on the frame and we'll go from there. Good luck Pro. If you don't set goals you settle for anything. Most people wouldn't know 380 vs 350 if they saw it.
 
My "rainbow warrior" posse is growing by the day, I should soon have enough people in tow to close off all the roads and surround "my" bull until opening morning. The only requirment to be part of the posse is you must be over 5'2", so that leaves NUNYA out in the cold. Sorry, that is just that way it is.:D

I am beginning to feel left out and regretting not getting a Dutton tag. I believe I might find a great waterhole shoot the first N Cache bull (only dinks left anyway) I see on August 16th. Then I could load up the mules and head to the Dutton as the rainbow warriors official "packer". It sure would save time and backs for putting more pisscutters on the ground.

Maybe Pro would reconsider Nunya, I would like to meet this character. A few years ago on his dedicated hunter S Cache tag, we conversed via phone on places to look. I have heard rumor of his bull yet another one I never saw a picture of. I am beginning to believe these so called elk guru's are hiding something and I need to come and investigate for myself.

Bess i dont think that you can count a 380+ spike or 421 3x4 as a mature bull on the dutton. pro's gonna stick one of those two beasts six miles into sasquatch's hell hole with no way out but up ;-) Seriously though its pro's tag let him do with it as he pleases after all we are all just jealous by standards cant wait for the pics tho its gettin closer every day!

you never know when that elk bugle will come in handy. just make sure the wind is right before you blow.

Bessy, while that is a good bull in post #60, I honestly would NOT let an arrow fly.

Birdum, I shot for an hour tonight. I have been shooting 3-4 times a week since December. If I miss it will be from nerves, not skill. I have great coaches in swbuckmaster and broadside shot.

You guys are only making things worse for the wife and children, the more I think about my hunt the more obsessed I get. KEEP IT UP!

Now, I know for a fact that there will be a few 400 bulls. I would love to see you blow by 379 7/8 bulls trying to get one. Those 400 bulls are very call savvy.

I hope you get it done "big talker." ;-)
 
One more thing. I cannot say I know ANYONE, except you of course, who would pass an all-time B&C animal?
 
There was this one time and on that day pro called in a 400" bull to one of his clients to 15 yards. The hunter finished like the guy on American Pie finished with Nadia and ended up with a miss and a mess in his pants.
Pro is a pro when calling in elk. Pro has also taken two other bulls above 350 with his bow on that unit. So I think he can shoot.
What Pro is trying to accomplish is going to make great reading whether he hits his bull or cagars en los pantalones.

Pro saying he would pass on the bull I posted proves my point. I don't think he says he would pass because of the number. I think he is passing because of the configuration of the antlers. That bull actually had a stick through his right g3 at the base that was still there which made it nearly 10 inches shorter than the left g3. So then it becomes a 390 bull. But even at 390 he is weak on his 5ths and his 4ths are just average. His mass is better than it looks because of the length. Another guide had seen him the week before and thought he was much smaller than he turned out to be. I had live scored him in the 360's. The number doesn't matter as much as what you like to look at and what is impressive to YOU. Pro, all we (the TRUE sportsman) ask is for a great story and some pictures. I'll try and do the same from the San Juan. Bull or no bull it's going to be a great fall....
 
Well said birdbuster. I don't like the backend of that bull, I want solid 5ths on my bull. Am I being picky? Damn straight! Why, because I can.

I need you to show me how to call a 400 bull away from his cows. I never saw it done. I know we suck at elk hunting, so can I come and watch the pro in action?;-)

I swear to God I am NOT wearing a gay tie-dye faggot shirt though. That is the queerest thing I have ever heard. That, and I do not want to look like an elk hunting Bill Walton. ;-)
 
Luckily, sweatbands are optional. The t-shirts only have to be worn for the pictures. I am hoping to get a bull in velvet, my shirts are much better looking than some lame baby blue tees!

You figured it out. I have taken several big bucks in velvet, so I wanted a way to get a big bull in velvet. August 16th or bust!

Rainbow tye die T-shirts?? I thought that it was blue T-shirts and big bulls? That must be a last year thing I guess.

I can see already see Slam now, blocking off the road in his tye die shirt with the sleeves cut off. I may have to drive down just to see the circus come to town. :)

Pro invited me to come along also. I was so excited that I headed down to Cabelas and bought me a brand-spankin-new Hoochie Mama. I have been practicing with it so much over the past 2 days that my wife is starting to get mad. Pro doesn't have any idea what a great help I will be on his hunt.

Now, if I can just get Ty to come over and shoe my horses......

WOW I am the one that needs to be offended!!!!

My phone ain't ringing!!! We all know that Ty and the boys are going to need plenty of adult "hydration" and I happen to have a masters degree in that area.

Packout is only going to watch so many 379 6/8 bulls go by before he will need some liquid relief. I will only need one of those bulls go by before I choke your silly ass out and get r done for ya.
