LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-08 AT 12:53PM (MST)[p]I have been putting in for Premium Limited Entry Elk for the Plateau Boulder/Kaiparowits unit.

Has anyone ever drawn this tag, or the archery, muzzleloader, or rifle tage?

How was the hunt?

I have 7 points now, Is it worth the wait?

thanks

Yes, it is worth the wait. The Plateau Boulder is one of the top five units in Utah.

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

Do you think it is worth the 14 year wait for the Premium hunt or would you do the 8-9 year wait for Archery?

Absolutely Boulder is worth the wait. I archery hunt deer down there most every year and have even hunted spike elk a few times. We have seen some monster bulls. That is why my 13 points (now 14) will be spent there. With your 7 points, the wait for the premium will likely be longer than 14 years. If you are an archery hunter and feel good about hunting with a lower probability of success, the archery hunt is a good choice. We occasionally hear them bugling late in the archery deer season. Which will also create a problem for you. You will be hunting alongside all of us general archery deer and archery spike elk hunters. That is why I apply for the early rifle. I am just not willing to spend my points on an archery hunt like that. Though I will hunt a few days with my bow when I draw.

Jon,

I am in your same boat...had 13 points, applied for the early rifle and did not draw. It will be interesting to see if any reserved tags slipped to our point level or if enough 14 and 15 point guys jumped over to take them all. Anyways I would bet that you and I both will be hunting their within the next 4 years at most.

It is good to meet someone that has been waiting as long as I have. Do you know the Boulder Mountains well? I have been hunting there for coming up on 20 years. I have watched the elk herd go from almost nothing to what we have now. I hope that we can draw within the next 4 years. My bet is that one or two bonus tags slipped into our point level so it is getting close. I just worry that Boulder is going to reach its apex and will have gone down hill by the time I draw. Lets hope not.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-08 AT 09:09PM (MST)[p]that mountain is to rugged to reach its apex in another 4 years. its just a damn shame that when guys shoot a big bull on that mountain they have to publish what mountain they shot it on in all the magazines. it makes our odds of getting a tag that much harder. joe blow reads where the big bull was shot in a magazine and puts in for the unit, never even being down there. hopefully us guys who know the mountain and have hunted it our whole lives can get a tag in a few years. im a patient man.

JDC,
What's your opinion on the late hunt I drew this year and would appreiate any info.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-08 AT 09:13PM (MST)[p](Boulders) my dad had that tag last year. tuff hunt no snow last year elk were scattered. a couple bulls still had cows and were ruttin pretty hard still. have you hunted the boulders before?

Boulders,

Congratulations on a great tag. How many points did you have? My opinion is that you are going to have a great hunt, but I doubt it will be an easy one. Especially if the snow doesn't fly by the time your hunt begins. With the overall population being relatively small (around 450 head), they could still be scattered and you might have to work pretty hard to find them if they haven't moved down off the top. If they do move down the mountain I know of a few areas you can check out. So that I don't make anyones secrets public, if there is such a thing now days, you can PM me if your are interested.

Good luck,

Jon

pm me i will help you in any way i can. I have hunted that area my whole life, my family has lived down there forever. hell i remember when nobody even heard of the Henry mountains, go figure. tuff rugged mountain. a lot more people down there the last 10 years. the bowhunt is a damn joke nowdays with most guys drivin the highway, fifth wheels and fourwheelers almost everywhere. You have an oppurtunity to have a lot of the mountain to yourself in november, that is as close to heaven you can get in my book.
