Just wondering if any of you have hunted the South West Desert (Indian Peaks) unit and what your success was. I could use any help that you could offer, and of course I am not looking for any honey holes or anything. Just some good areas that we could start scouting this summer.
What has been your experience with then the rut starts in that unit? Does it start later because of the temp being so warm still?

Any info you could provide would be great

Thanks in advance guys.

1st advice.....get a GPS or you'll get lost in those cedars down low!!

It's been a few years since i have actually been there, but it seems to have quieted down from being a 400" unit, but that's not too say they aren't still there.

Which hunt did you draw? My little brother drew a tag at the expo, so we will be out there on the early rifle hunt. I had a friend draw the muzzy hunt a few years ago. It was a fun hunt and we saw tons of bulls. I would imagine the management hunts and increased tag numbers over the past couple of years have made an impact on the number of bulls in the unit though. I don't plan on seeing as many bulls this year, but I guess we will find out once we start scouting. Like Slam said....the cedars are thick!!

We will be out there on the early rifle tag as well. Trying to decide where to start looking and if they will be in the rut heavely or just starting. I guess a lot of that will depend on what the weather is doing that time of year.

I was out there last year quit a bit. I have put together a DVD from most of my recordings, there are some big bulls still around. Just have to know where they end up that time of year. E mail me back if interested.

It is thick out there, we used to go out and call and video the elk in high school, they do rut pretty good, we used to go to a spot called Jacksons Wash on the north side of the road. There were elk everywhere out there. But it is so thick we would call them into 20 yards and could only see their legs! PM if you want and I can give you some more details.

Thanks for the info guys, that is what makes this site one of the greatest. Hunters sharing experiences and information with other hunters.

Thanks again and any additional information would be great.

If you are not seeing more bulls than cows you need to move elsewhere. There are tons of big bulls down there. The unit is huge but good areas to try would be the WahWah Mtns. and Jockeys. The Indian Peak area gets hit real hard so if it were me I would stay away from that area.

Igottabigone,

Thanks for that Info, that confirms alot of my very thoughts about the Peak Area. We are trying to find a place that we can get away from the croweds a little.
