Ok guys and girls. We have had this roll call before on other threads but I don't think we have had one for the Blacktail hunters so why not see how many Blacktail hunters we have on the site. Give a brief description of where and who you are how long you have hunted these ghost bucks and what type of hunting equipment you use for these deer. I'll start it off but lets keep it going.

Jeff Wakefield. aka wake1. Have been actively hunting them for about 8 years but grew up in Sitka Alaska where my family hunted them for 18 years. I use a Remington 7MM or a Marlin 30-30. I have only hunted them in western Washington. I also hunt Mule deer in Eastern Oregon when I draw.

Jordan Bradbury- AKA Blacktail_boy.
I have been hunting them for the last 6 years. I started hunting the gray ghost when I was 12. Have taken a few smaller bucks and one decent sized blacktail. I have hunted with a modern rifle for the first four years but recently just switched to muzzle loading. I live in western washington near olympia. Yeah that's about all guys....Taker 'er easy. Jordan

HI there, WAredneck here AKA Willy, moved to Washington in 91 and have hunted them every since. Retired from the Navy in 95 and moved to the Bremerton area from Oak Harbor. Hey Devlin

Ever hunt the Monkey rock area up around Lake Pillbury? Hunted that a few times when you used to just have a coastal tag and a general tag. Before all the zones were put into place. Have not been back since and spend the A zone above above Upper Lake now.

Ron French aka treekiller

Been hunting Blacktails for 35 years in northwest Oregon.

Started out hunting with a rifle, but went to a bow in 1984. Went back to rifle so I could spend more time during the rut photographing them. I have several photos on blacktailcountry.com and Kevin Neilsen's website if you're interested.

My largest bowkill scored 136, taken with a yew selfbow 1990.

My largest rifle score 140, taken with a .308 Win. in 1996.

Most of my hunting is done on public land or private timberland.

Hey Ridge Runner I don't reconize that name.I use to hunt mostly out of Stony Ford but I guess they had a hell of a fire there and it burnt the whole country up.I haven't been over there to check it out yet but there should be some great hunting in another year or two_Oh yea hey French those were a couple of toads you killed,......Devlin

I'm a part-timer with the blacktails. I hunt the mule deer/blacktail cross that are so prevalent on the east slope of the cascades. Benchlegs.

My favorite way to fix venison is with my 58 caliber hawken. Occassionally I'll slide down to a smaller 54. However the last blacktail I killed was on Mt Hood with my pet 270. A nice little three-point.
Randy.

Devlin

We used to hunt out of stonyford also. Camped at Letts lake and hunted the goat mt area. When did they have the fire up there? I know they had a big one in 96 or 97. Did they get one last year? Might be worth having a look around this year.

Yea thats a little closer to where I use to hunt Ridge hunter.I think that fire was about 3 years ago and down lower by the Fouts Springs Boys Camp. With all the new growth the deer should be doing real good.Well the wifes calling for dinner have a good one......Devlin

Welcome to the site Glasser. You will enjoy it. Looking forward to reading some of your post in the future. Bob D I have heard that the antlers were given to a taxidermists with the proceeds going to Ducks Unlimited as the hunter was just fed up with all the controversy about the kill. Time will tell about all of it. I think they went for around $2000? I think thats what I heard on another site.

I haven't hunted blacktails yet since I just relocated to the Oregon coast. I'm looking forward to the chance but I believe my focus will still be on mule deer.
From what I've seen around the Tillamook area (I'm a state forester) it appears that the population is down. The same is not true for the elk.

Howdy Springer,

My brother was down to Tillamook last weekend for a RMEF function, he said the dairy pasture's were full of elk.

I grew up hunting the Tillamook Burn for blacktails, incredible hunting back then. Good luck finding much now!!! Probably more deer around the clearcuts down low.

Hello treekiller. I remember talking to you before I moved down here last summer. Hope things are going good for you.
There is a big herd of elk that roams the pastures down here. I hear they take out alot of fences.
I've seen old pictures of the burn and its amazing how this forest has recovered. Now we have a problem with the Swiss Needle Cast disease that is wiping out most of the fir.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-08-03 AT 11:09PM (MST)[p]Well I just found this site and figured I better add my Name to the list of Blacktail hunters. I have been hunting them for 15-16 years. I hunt western oregon, mostly in the Santiam unit and do a fair amount of hunting just east of Roseburg up out of glide. I hunt with a .280 Remington Mountian rifle. My best buck is a heavy antlered 4x5 with real nice eyeguards. Have many others to my credit but that is the best one. I love chasing these things, definately and addiction.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-03 AT 01:35PM (MST)[p]Hey RR,
How's it going. Haven't talked to you in a while. Don't forget, next time your out here hunting you'll have to stop by and show me the bucks your twins are going to get. I've been to Monkey Rock a lot of times. Every year there are a few big bucks brought out of there.

This is a great message board. It great to see blacktails being talked about on other boards besides mine (BTC.com) and Jesse's. They can use all the recognition they can get.

Anyway, I'm 42 and have been hunting blacktails since I was twelve, in northern California's, A and B zones. I have been lucky enough to take a few pretty good bucks and fortunate enough to film a few real beauties. Thanks again for the great board.
Dan

OK guys thaught I'd join in.
Gary Longfellow aka Central_Coast_Hunter

I've been hunting Central coast of calif. blacktails

I hunt with a winchester model 70 mountain rifle
and have been hunting mule deer for 35 years but
I am new to blacktail hunting. I live in So. Cal.
and don't know much about the blacktail areas.
Perhaps D-5,6 or 7 areas would be a possible choice
for next year. If anyone can offer any suggestions
for a newcomer to this species, I will gladly listen.

Clint Garman AKA norcalhntr 38 years old(ouch)
New to this site and thought i would join in. Ive been hunting blacktail/mulecross for 22 years. I grew up in Plumas County, Ca primarily hunting what is now X6a/X6b until we went to the draw for premium tags.I cant seem to get lucky anymore and draw.I now live in the Chico/Paradise area and have spent the last few years hunting some b zone and alot of C4 in the plumas county area. Ive taken a few nice bucks over the years but can see the decline in most of the herds on the east slope. The C4/G1(Tehema herd) herd is really hurting compared to what is use to be. Especially with habitat destruction, lions, forest fire policies, and timber company practices.
I shoot Remington BDL 700 30-.06, also an old york compound bow when i can.
REMEMBER!!!! We are able to tote around our rifles hunting anywhere in this counrty because of the brave servicemen and women of our past. So support our troops and country so our kids and all future generations can do the same.

Jon Campbell

Sorry I'm late

David Elliott

7mm Rem Mag

Hunting Blacktails for 35yr

Hunt yolo, colusa and lake counties in the A-zone

Kill two a year mostly on private ground with dogs.

Blueoak

My mistake. I have never seen anyone doing this and don't know anyone that does it. I know it is not legal in most places and figured it was illegal every where in CA.

How do you use them? The way I read it is you can have one dog per hunter. Do you set people on stands then run the dogs through the brush to push the deer out to the standers?

RWCHUNTER

RWCHUNTER

We make drives to people on stands. However, they are good for single hunters too. Dogs are trained to roam out 50yds, so you can work ridge tops, rocks and brush. These blacktail love to sit real tight and will fight the dogs before they jump! When they jump, you go to work on'em. I don't use them in the oaks , because they will go to far. I have always wanted to try them on mule deer. Even the muleys are sitting tight these days. I have killed two that jumped up 15yrds from me and they knew I was there!

David Baun, i have hunted blacktails 20 yrs in most of the b zones.Browning bow,remington 700bolt in30-06

Hey guys. Rochelle here. My first trip into the Sierra's was when my mom was 5 months pregnant with me. Start my hunting in July in the A-Zones and by mid August I'm traveling back and forth between the D-7 and A-Zone until I tag out. I much prefer using my Hoyt, but I'll pack the 30-06 if necessary. I'm 32 now and recently moved to Vashon, Wa. I'm missing the early California season right about now. Any of you Western Washington boys want to show me around, give me a shout. I'm not opposed to you Eastern Washington hunters though. I hear there's a late bow season here. What's the story on this hunt? Look forward to hearing from you, and the best of luck this season.

Lewis County Washington, been huntin Blacktails for 25 years. 1st 21 years with rifle last 4 with archery. Been fairly successful, 8 over 100 points with my largest 122. That B & C Blacktail is still elusive to me. Wouldn't trade the dark timber hunts for anything, love those close encounters.

my name is Dan i hunt the central sierras and the coast range sometimes 30 years and use a 270 winchester or browning 7mm

Steve Cooksey, killed my first blacktail up on Southfork Mtn. in 1964 (B-2, CA) with my dads old 30-30. Back then I would deer hunt until duck season opened then I would spend all my free time chasing ducks and geese in my scull boat. Mostly on Humboldt Bay.

Spent a few years bowhunting but never successful. Now I usually only hunt blacktails if I don't get to hunt out of state, chasing mule deer in Idaho,Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico. As I get older though I plan to stay home and hunt blacktails more.

Steve,
Is Southfork Mtn. in Trinity Co. by Hyampom and Hayfork?? If so, a friend I grew up with lived there for many years in Hyampom. His second wife was able to get him to move to civilization back around 1980-81 to Redding.
Last I heard he was living in Burney Falls area.
He took me hunting up there a few times, but not on Opening Morning of Deer season. Too many "crazy's" out there in the hills.

Herb Duerr, AKA Herb D, aunuts, Siskiyou Slim

New to this site!

Have hunted blacktail 45 years ? also mulies and elk in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Montana.

Started with 8 mm Lebel and Argentine Mauser, but then switched to a 25-06 Custom Mauser when it was still a wildcat. Others are from 7mm RUM to 375 RUM.

Bow: tried recurve bow in sixties but gave it up, as I never connected.

Hunted these deer mainly in B6 but have hunted from Petaluma north to Oregon border. Saw the ultimate Calif. Record buck in ?92 one week after season closed!

Finally moved to B6 and live around the corner from ?sisqhunter? but he doesn't know it yet.

kilowatt,
Yes that's Southfork Mtn. alright. It's actually one long ridge line that runs north/south for about 40 miles, one of the longest in the US.
I share your feelings about all the "crazys" around opening day. The problem is, that area is one giant blacktail factory. Although not as good as it once was, it's almost all public land, and there are lots of good bucks to be had. If you can hunt on a week day and catch a change in the weather you can still get lucky.

I drove through Hyampom one day this season and stopped at the store for a beer, just for old time sake. Now that logging is all but gone, it's pretty quiet.

Steve

The original town of Hyampom was washed away in that 1964 flood and the present one is back a ways from the river.

My friend's family moved there back in 1950 from San Jose and we went there one Juny 4th for a weekend in '51 or '52 can't remember and between Art's dad, my dad, Art & I caught over 100 trout for breakfast that morning for the family feed.
Never got back up there till 1974 and looked Art up and hunted that weekend, opener, sounded like Bunker Hill that Sat.
went back up there on a couple of other trips but stopped when he moved from Redding to Burney Falls and haven't seen him since.
Good memory's of the old days.

Looooooong time BT hunter. I like those northern B Zones and C IF I get drawn. Like to hunt the oaks with a Ruger 7mm Mag. Lots of glassing. I'm not into meat deer, only BIG-UNs--23 or better. I find that the really big ones are usually near the BT/Muley line where they cross over.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-05 AT 08:49PM (MST)[p]Been hunting the GHOST for 20+ years also in A zone of Califrnia on private land. Have more rifles than I know what to do with and always end up with "ol faithful"(Rem. mod 700 .270) I've been blessed with some fine hunting areas in Central California. Best buck was a heavy 2x3 21" wide and 16" high whith no eye guards.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-05 AT 11:33PM (MST)[p]Thought I'd replied to this post before, but I guess not...

Hunted Blackies in WA, OR and all over CA off and on since 1981. Killed some good ones and missed some even better ones... used .243, 30-06, and 7mm-08.

They're a great back-up plan here in Calif. when you don't get drawn for any draw hunts here or out of state...

Good luck to all in '05

Hey Steve you would see alot of big bucks too if you road your damm Quad all over Fort Backer. Not what I would call public land deer.

Greg has some great stories every monday Ha Ha.

Jason, started hunting blacktails 19 years ago.A zone a little now only B zone(mainly due to size and numbers). As for weapons I start with my hoyt xtec during archery and then I go to either my 270(short distance) or my 300 ultra mag(long range). Not much success the first fifteen years, but the last few have been great including the two four points I took last year. Learn more and love it more every year!

Ryan, B-5, Yolla Bolly Wilderness.
4th generation Bzone hunter.
14 years legally, used to tag along with Dad before. I have killed 11 bucks total, 3 with bow, one with a shotgun slug at Black Butte Lake.

Ruger M77 Mark II 30'06 Lefthanded bolt
PSE PRIMOS 68#
PSE CARBON EXTREMES,MUZZY 100 gr. 4-blades

Best way to hunt I've been taught, mostly glassing from up as high as I can get, find a buck and try and get close. Between the deer and other hunters, it works about 2 out of 10 tries. Just find a comfy seat and use other hunters to your advantage, let them push the deer around. If nothing else works, just go have a beer in camp and you can kill a 4x5 that wanders in like my hunting partner did last year.

LUCK HELPS I GUESS......
