Is there any private ground on the NEBO unit and who has guided on this unit as a friend drew a Nebo Muzzle tag and needs some help.

Thanks

There is a lot of private ground on this unit, but there is more public ground. If he is seriously considering paying to get on private lands then PM me, I may be able to help.

I drew that tag also. I was curious as to the number of tags that were given on this unit. I have heard that there was a big increase. I am a little worried.

I have hunted the Nebo all my life and your concern over the amount of tags is justified. The unit was at its peak about 5 years ago. The management practices have lowered the number of available mature bulls on the public portions of the unit. Your best bet for a 350 bull would probably be on the east side of the unit on private ground. Don't get me wrong there are still some good bulls on the public portions, butnot like there was 5 years ago. The antlerless harvest has been brutal on the public land portions of the unit. The number of LE tags has steadily increased over the past 5 years. I personally take issue with the DWRs population estimates. If the number of elk are truly what they claim, then most of the elk are residing on private winter grounds where hunters are not allowed to hunt. If I am correct in my opinion, this means that hunters buy permits to hunt only about 70% of the elk that are on the unit. 30% of the elk must be on private ground and unavailable to the public hunter. In 1999, 273 spike elk were harvested on the unit, in 2007 only 75 spike were harvested. Seems to me that there is something wrong with the picture here.
However, you should be able to have great hunt and find a respectable bull to pull the trigger on. the unit just isn't what it was several years ago.

I wouldn't be too confident in making the statement that most of the elk and bigger bulls are on private lands. The majority of the private lands get hunted just as much as the public...and in some instances, much, much more. On some of the private lands I'm familiar the elk heard numbers and bull numbers have dropped dramatically since the peak about 4-5 years ago. I've drawn a Nebo ELK tag this year and have access to some of these "greener on the other side" private lands, but I may just spend a large amount of my hunt time on the far southwestern end PUBLIC LANDS of the unit where the Pavaunt gene bulls roam. Isn't it greener there too?

I have not spent a great deal of time in the unit the past 10 years, but I do know alot of the country. At least the Payson to Nephi side. I am considering that my best opportunity at a GOOD bull may be to pack into the eastern side from the loop road. Via the Summit trail, or Blacks canyon. What are your thoughts with that? I have also killed a few elk with my bow east of the rangers station. I have thought that traveling into the lower oak brush country may also be good. I am trying to get an idea about how I can maximize this opportunity.........despite 82 rifle hunters(just prior), and countless general muzzle deer hunters during the same time. I would genuinely appreciate any assistance anyone could give.

Flinger- I think what Nebo1200 is saying, is that the DWR is giving a heard counts much higher than the numbers any of us are seeing. They claim they are there, but, where?? When pressed the DWR stated that most were on the East side of the unit, on private land. I personaly would dare say that the bigger bulls are there....

Slayem- Over the past few years there hasn't been alot of elk off the Summit Trail, like years past. You will find some down in Black Canyon, but, probably nothing over the 310-320 mark. Not sure why that is, but it seem the smaller bulls seem to have it made down in there. Shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can't give you a little more info.
