Ukiah Unit Oregon

It does not look like my father and I are going to be able to draw a tag for the Mt. Emily unit ( branch bull ). So I thought I would start looking at another unit that we might be able to draw. Time is a factor since my ol man is not getting any younger. I'm not asking for anyone to draw me a map or tell me exactly where to go I was just wanting to know if the Ukiah unit is worth taking a look at if a guy wants to take a nice bull. We are looking for a unit that if we do our part and hunt hard we could have a chance at a 250 or better class bull. I was wondering if the Ukiah unit had bulls of this class or better in it.

Thank you,

There are very few bulls in that class in Ukiah, you'd have a better chance of winning the lottery and spending the money on a conservation tag elsewhere. to be realistic Ukiah is like most units in Oregon, quantity over quality. expect an oh my god amount of hunters and a spike bull if you can beat them to it, it's too bad because it's some great elk country.

Anything is possible but a 250+ bull in any of the over the counter units is tough.

Slide, can't remember the details. Are you looking at bow or rifle? Non-resident? How many preference points?

Are you looking at strictly DIY, or would you consider a drop camp type hunt?

I might have some ideas for you.

No we only do the DIY hunts, we are looking for a rifle hunt and we have 10pts as NR's. It's just my ol man and I, after looking over the draw odds you gave me we can't afford to wait 2-3 more yrs. My dad is already 67yrs old I don't think he could handle pakcing out a bull elk 5yrd from now so I'm trying to find something that we can draw next year.

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

With 10 pts each, and given your circumstances, I would recommend a starkey bull tag or an ochoco bull tag. You have a better chance at a mature bull in those areas than in Ukiah. That's what I'd do given your situation.

Good luck!! Sure wish Oregon would start treating NRs a little more fairly.

in my experience, ukiah and starkey are covered with roads and during elk season there are camps, people, rigs, and atv's everywhere. to me it seems like luck if you kill a big bull under these conditions. although, there are a few 330-350 bulls taken every year in these units. minam and snake river both have quite a few 280-320 class bulls and some bigger, but you will likely have to get several miles into rough country to have a really good hunt and snow can be a major problem some years. minam has leftover tags for both hunts most years, snake river takes about 3 points for residents if i remember right. i can give some good info if interested.

with 10 points this year you're almost guaranteed a tag for 254Y1, Mt. Emily bull tag.
They pulled 36 out of 47 with 9 points last year.

Too late now though.

Thank you for all your input guys i really appreciate it. Bob I have 10pts as a NR and I applied for Mt. Emily Bull but the draw odds show I need another 2-3pts and still might not draw as a NR. The info. you posted above is that for a NR?

Thank oyu,

crap, sorry. I was looking at res. Brain fade on my part.

You have 3 guys ahead of you and 8 in your point pool. ouch

Slide,A NR will never draw Mt. Emily,Walla Walla or Wenaha as a party.Heck, with 10 points, any of them would be a long wait by yourself.I think if you want to hunt "this year",you can amend your application for awhile yet.Good luck to you & your father!

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it. Looks like the ol man and I are going to have to drop back and regroup. Time to find another unit.
