Hey guys here the deal.

This morning before first light at o'dark thirty I had set up looking into and up a draw where we had seen 30+ deer and 250+ elk the morning before. I had a couple of bucks come by at less than 300 yards but no shooters. I stayed put until 8:15 AM. Tom, my co-worker and hunting buddy had been hiking around on a spotting and scouting mission. We regrouped and decided to go just a little deeper to see what was around the next bend. Tom said "there's deer on the hill above us there could very well be deer below us as well"

We worked around one more hillside and Tom's new Lecias paid off. Tom found him from about 650 yards away in the heavy thick stuff you see in the picture. We snuck in for a closer look. He was with 2 other smaller bucks and 2 does. When we got to 300 yards I decided he was a shooter but the shot was head on and with a stiff cross wind. I stayed put and kept on eye on him as I laid prone with the bipod while Tom worked his way closer and up a bit into a rocky outcrop. Once in place Tom waved me closer and kept an eye on the buck. I managed to get to 174 yards and I had a dead steady rest and the bipod. Compared to my bowhunting experiences first 2 weeks of the season on another property this seemed like cheating. The buck was still not broadside and was quartering toward me so I aimed dead center and lined up the verticle cross hair on his front leg in back. Tom was ready and had the Lecias up for the shot. I took one last look in my binos for the monster that would stand up as I shot but didn't see him. I flipped off the safety....One shot from Tom's borrowed 270 WSM and he dropped in his tracks.

He's not quite the 180 I had hoped for but...He's a personal best for me and I'm glad to take him on a piece of Jefferson County Open Space that actually allows and encourages hunting. This was one of the last days I was going to be able to hunt because of work and the wife. Since I head to TX for whitetails right after Christmas I figured I better seal the deal today. After hunting 14 out of 19 days of the this season I am glad to be done before the Holidays.

I really had a great hunt I was able to bowhunt with one of my brothers who as drew this tag as well for 5 days in the begining of the season. I then hunted alone for a week and actualy had to pass on bigger 9x7 nontypical than this guy. I had him broadside at 28 yards but he had a doe between him and I. I thought about a spine shot since he was 6 inches taller than her but I didn't want to risk it. I also thought I have a doe tag as well maybe I could send one arrow through both deer. I decide that was way to risky.

One of my favorite moments of the hunt came today after I had harvested this deer. Tom and I had caped and quartered him and packed our packs for the hike out. At one point I looked back and Tom was hauling the back half of my deer, carrying a front quarter and he had the rifle he loaned me strapped to his pack. He sure is a mule and a great hunting buddy. Thanks Tom!

Congrats on a fine buck.
Is this one of those Centennial Cone late hunts?
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
Jerry

Congrats to you on the nice Buck. What in the world do you have on top of your head? No offense, just curious.

Thanks for the compliments.

Yes, TheKnack I was on Cent Cone. I have hunted adjoining properties for years and we always saw nice bucks over there when we couldn't hunt it. I drew the Dec 18-22 slot I think earlier or later maybe better. Pretty cool that the county right next to Boulder lets people hunt it's open space property. They have had a CWD problem close by so they wanted to get a sample from the deer herd especially older age class bucks. There's a chance if he's CWD+ I could get a new tag and continue to hunt until. Jan 31st 2005....Don't tell my wife!

The story on my head gear....I had been sitting of over an hour and a half in the shade and wind. I was freezing I had on my wool coat and camo knit hat and needed some blaze on top. As we made the stalk I was heating up so I pushed the headband up. Tom told me I looked dumb but I said snap a few pics and I'll change hats for some more pics...then the camera started messing up so that's all the pics I ended up...me with the stupid looking head gear.

Heck if I would have known that I would have given you another set of eyes to check the area out if they allow it...But then again you did very well yourself.
Congrats again.
Best,
Jerry

Congrats on the nice buck. The story is a great one. You are right about friends making the hunt.

TheKnack,

They only allow one helper so a second spotter wouldn't work unless you want to sit on adjoining property and glass. My brother who lives in Connecticut was out here for the first 5 days of the season and he has a slot on the Cone in mid Jan. I think he'll be back out. He claims this is "his" buck since he actually drew this Dec slot and we switched since it was so close to Christmas. We may need some help then. Are you local?

Nice buck. My wife shot a nice 4x4 on Douglas County Open Space this year in the archery season. It really is pretty cool to have these limited opportunities. We can actually see the area my wife hunted from our house, I glass it and hike it often.
