B&C Score's..?.....

Now First if I'm correct, I believe the B&C Score min. for mule deer was lowered to 185"..?.. It seems that lately there's been allot of 180 class bucks taken, even allot of 190's & some 200 class buck also...

My question would be this, do you think that B&C jumped the gun by lowering the min score..?.. There?s gotta be a bit more people registering their bucks for the B&C Books in the 180 class then there would be 190 or better... Now I know there's allot involved in the scoring system, deductions and symmetrical and all...even still...

It just seems to me it should be to register a buck in the B&C books, it should be just a little more of a rare or less common of a feat to put a buck in the books...so has it become more easier today...?...

yeh or neh.....

manny:

Actually the minimum score for typical mule deer is 190 0/8" net. This is the "new" minimum, as it used to be 195 0/8" not too long ago.

Some of the confusion may lie with the "Awards" program the club offers. Simply stated the club will publish, ONE TIME ONLY, those deer that meet the "awards" minimum of 180 0/8". However, these deer will NOT appear in the official B&C Record Book. Personally, I still don't know why they have this program, as it basically tells me, "Well, it's not big enough to make the book, but send us some entry money and we will put it in an "awards Book". :)

Here's the B&C official statement on the awards/all-time program:

"The All-time minimum score is the higher of the two minimum scores, and qualifies a trophy for the All-time book, Records of North American Big Game. Trophies that qualify for the All-time minimum are listed in each new edition of the All-time book. Trophies that qualify for the Awards minimum, but not the All-time minimum, will appear in the Awards book, published every three years, one time only. All trophy owners who have a trophy that scores at or above the Awards or All-time Awards minimum will receive a wall certificate, have their trophy listed in one issue of Fair Chase magazine and corresponding records book publications."

Hope it helps.

Manny,

You also have to realize alot of big numbers are thrown around loosely on the internet and in the famous big buck magazines, but those numbers and actual "official score" numbers are often times far apart.

It is still very hard to put a mule deer in the "book".

Looking at a scoring sheet....it was alittle confusing, I just scored a 33" 4x4 and only came up with 170 2/8"....

awards all time
mule deer: 180" 190"
Columbian blacktail: 125" 135"
Sitka Blacktail: 100" 108"

We also have SCI scoring system right, total all with no deductions..?.. I heard they (SCI) also have a category for the cross bucks we get here in N, Cali. Where as B&C don't recognize our bucks to be black tail so they must meet the mule deer standards....?... I never paid much attention to the books until recent...

F YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!
Manny,
blacktails in cal are scored in the blacktail category if they were taken west of interstate 5.Has been that way for forty or more years.

IF YOUR GOING TO BE A BEAR BE A GRIZZLY BEAR!
Also manny a 30 inch buck doesn't necesary mean it is even close to the book. A 170 buck is a nice buck but not even in the same class as a 190 or better buck.

I heard it was 40 miles west of I-5...?...

Manny if I entered all my bucks in SCI I would have about ten in the top 15.They accept all total lenghts and no deducts. Its what most guys go by,because thats all I see is a gross score that means nothing to me It's the net score is what counts. They try and make it sound bigger than what it is!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-25-04 AT 00:15AM (MST)[p]Manny,

beginning in Siskiyou County at the Oregon-California border, the boundary lies between townships R8W and R9W M.D.M. extending south to and along the Klamath river to Hamberg, then south along the road to Scott Bar, continuing south and then east on the unimproved road from Scott Bar to its intersection with the paved road to Mugginsville, then south through Mugginsville to State highway 3, which is then followed to Douglas City in Trinity County, from which the line runs east on state highway 299 to interstate 5. The line follows I-5 south to the area of Anderson, where the Sacramento River moves east of I-5, following the Sacramento River until it joins with the San Joaquin River, which is followed to the south border of Stanislaus County. The line then runs west along this border to the east border of Santa Clara County. The east and south borders of Santa Clara County are then followed to the south border of Santa Cruz County, which is then followed to the edge of Monterey Bay.

Got that??????? If you are west of all that jibberish then it is a blacktail.

Whats your preference on Gross score vs. Net score?

I know a lot of people like gross score more, it gives the animal full credit for what he has.

I personally see width & mass as most appealing to me...
