LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-08 AT 10:12AM (MST)[p]I have just found out today that I have drawn a unit 34 muzzleloader elk liscense for oct4-oct8.I have never hunted this unit before and if anyone has some info that they could share about this unit it would be greatly appreciated.I am not looking to kill the biggest bull on the mountain, but do plan on holding out for something in the 300' inch range. Is this a realistic expectation??

That is a great tag I have not hunted there YET but apply often, from many guys I know who hunted there a 300" bull with muzzleloader is a VERY real goal. Maybe even better.

That is a great unit, and the best hunt on it. Congrat's I would kill for that tag.

My 14 year old son drew the youth elk tag for this unit. His hunt is 9/27 - 10/1. He is very excited for his first elk hunt and the good possiblity of harvesting a 300" bull. we've never been in this unit so we have a lot of reserach to do in the next few months as well.

Congrats, Im in the same boat. Just found out I drew also and am looking for any info. Its my first muzzy elk hunt.

My son had the junior hunt in 34 last year. He killed his first elk on that hunt. We couldn't have done it without the help of good people on this & other message boards. I'll send you a PM with some info, but will be sure I respect the privacy (and secret spots...) of those who helped us last year.

As mentioned, we got a lot of good info but we ended-up finding our elk in a spot that was not unique to any single bit of intel we got. Bottom line, I'll send you some tips.

I hope you enjoy the pic, and I hope that you (and those with kids!!!) have a great hunt!

Thanks guys for the response to my request.I will be in touch as soon as I have my maps in hand. Also I will be driving out to new mexico from pennsylvania. If anyone else drew from the eastern united states and would like to share a ride, I have a crew cab truck with a slide in camper.I drew solo so the company would be welcome.I plan on getting out there 3-4 days before season to do some scouting.
also could anyone recomend any meat processors in the area?I will need to get my elk quick froze for the trip home should I get one.
