I kinda screwed up and was supposed to be putting in for unit 15 muzzleloader elk but accidentally entered 3-328 instead of 3-228, so I drew a unit 48 muzzleloader elk tag and I know nothing about this unit whatsoever. I'm not asking for any honeyholes, just wondering if anybody knows much about the quality of bulls in this unit? Thanks for any info - Ted

Ted- it's not going to be anything like a unit 15 hunt. The country is going to knock you out as it's as elky and beautiful as anything you can find in NM, but the locals keep it pretty well poached out and the elk know the boundaries (it's surrounded by some huge elk ranches- the CS, the UU-Bar, etc.) There are elk to be found by the serious hunter, but it will take some work to get away from the very well travelled roads (-same old story-how many times have we heard that on here)

Trophy quality is poor compared to the Gila, another obvious point, but the CS and UU-Bar manage for and kill some good bulls. Plus it's elk hunting, in the aspens, and if the rut hits right- who knows.

Certainly do a little homework and try to scout at least a little to get a feel for it. There is a mozaic of private land mixed in and always problems associated with that, but I understand there is a new Lease situation that may make things easier, but you should look into it.
